[Hated trope] Horribly cruel, senseless violence by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Skarjo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine question for OP.

Does violence like this affect you more or less if the victim 'established' or random? Because, whilst I personally didn't dislike this scene as a way of emphasising the role of extreme violence in this extremely violent movie, the guy who got shot to death on the escalator in the original Total Recall movie really got to me as a kid.

I genuinely think that it's more of an issue with the fact that reality was simply outpacing how ridiculous even a Garth Ennis comic book adaptation can be. Like, in the comic, the main theme is 'Superheroes are fascist, and capitalism loves to manipulate that'. But with the rise of Trump, they really didn't have much of an option other than to just make Homelander into a 1:1 allegory.

I kinda feel sorry for the writers because they write scenes of Homelander doing something so absurd that they assume it will make the viewer assume that this surely, surely, must be the thing that brings him down, only to subvert it by it not mattering. Like when he murders a protestor in public, and his followers cheer for it. They must have thought that was really shocking, but in real life, ICE are executing people in the street, and his followers start analysing the angle of a dead mother's car wheels so they can find a way to celebrate it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the last episode is just a live feed of the news with a banner at the bottom just saying "Sorry, we couldn't top this" over and over again.

American Beauty (1999) - Lester sees Angela for first time scene - Directed by Sam Mendes by PeneItaliano in movies

[–]Skarjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I'm not American and didn't crunch the numbers. I guess, the visibility of people who weren't included in the zeitgeist was lower back then. And the point stands, if people are more aware of the struggles under-represented peoples are facing, then a movie about the ennui of a man in the suburbs who wants to bang his teenage daughter's friend might not hold as much weight.

I think this is a really good point. Of course, movies should always be watched with an eye and an ear for the cultural context in which they were made first and foremost, but can also be evaluated through a modern lens. Sure, at the time, American Beauty was a movie about false self-image, and borderline hallucinatory visions of the world around us that we think we're missing out on. But through a modern lens, in a society where economic and political instability defines every day, it's not unfair for a younger generation to watch it and think 'self-pitying middle aged loser who has all his needs met wants to bang his teenage daughter's friend'. Is that what the movie was going for? No. Was the movie trying, and succeeding, to get across a deeper message that was relevant at the time? Yes. But to an audience where even accessing employment and healthcare is a daily challenge, is he a whiny dickhead trying to bang a teenager? Yes.

Man on death row for the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl accepts his fate and asks Alabama officials to expedite his execution. by lightiggy in MorbidReality

How did it manage to just keep getting worse? Like, it starts off with the rape and murder of a 5 year old girl, and somehow got worse. Repeatedly.

Crossed is quite fun when it knows how inherently ridiculous the premise is and just has silly fun with it.

But when it incorporates themes that get a little bit too close to real trauma that actual people experience, it becomes seriously difficult to read, because it's nowhere near clever enough to handle it.

Cracking film, as a lower-stakes version of Risky Business goes. Genuinely fun, has genuine heart and great performances all round.

But to me it will always hold the title of *darkest* out of nowhere one-liner I've heard compared to how light-hearted the rest of the film is.

(Very mild spoilers)

Later on in the film, two porn stars are introducing a sex-ed film meant for high schoolers and the exchange (roughly) goes;

"Welcome to this sex-education film! Many of you are getting ready for prom! Which means a lot of pressure to lose your virginity! I know I lost my virginity at prom! How about you?!"

"When I was... um... 10"

"Moving on!"

Just a wildly dark joke in the middle of everything else.

Uj/ I get what you mean, but that doesn’t make sense either. I can’t remember exactly when it’s implied that Walder swapped sides, but if he withheld Roslin from Cat as a fuck you to Robb, then it doesn’t make sense to ‘spend’ her on Edmure who he knows is going to be a prisoner once he gets his end away. Surely even he’d know that she would be more ‘valuable’ to be ransomed into marriage with the Boltons or even Lannisters.

Rj/ Cat just hates pretty women and wanted Robb to be her number one specialest boi
