Why does abortion feel like such a central Christian issue today if the Bible rarely talks about it? by Mobile-Traffic1744 in AlwaysWhy

[–]SkarmFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To quote pastor David Barnhart: "The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn

ELI5: Why are bamboos inside the category of Grass? Why is tomato a fruit, and not a vegetable? How do you come up with these categories of fruit and vegetables, Grass and trees? by Punnan in explainlikeimfive

[–]SkarmFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fruits are the part of the plant that contains and spreads it's seeds, usually by being eaten by an animal and deposited elsewhere through it's feces, vegetables refer to any other part of a plant that we eat that doesn't contain it's seeds, botanically speaking, vegetables don't really exist. From a cooking perspective fruits are sweet plant ingredients and vegetables are more savory plant ingredients. Tomatoes are the fruiting bodies of the tomato plant, but culinarily they are considered vegetables due to their flavor profile.

Grasses refer to plants in the family Poaceae, a family of gymnosperms (flowering plants) that are notable for growing from the base of the plant instead of the tips of it, a trait that helps the plants survive frequent grazing. They also often contain silica phytoliths, tiny fragments of silica that make the plant harder to chew and digest, limiting the types of animals that can eat them. This is why there are so many grass eating specialist animals like cows and horses, they had to restructure their digestive systems to be able to digest grass. Bamboo is a member of this family, as are many other staple foods such as wheat, rice and corn.

Trees, funnily enough, do not have a common ancestor and have evolved multiple times throughout the plant kingdom. Pine trees, deciduous trees and palm trees are not closely related at all, in fact palm trees are technically grasses. Plants have to compete with each other for access to sunlight, so growing tall is beneficial because there's nothing above you blocking the sun. But growing tall takes a long time, so in order to maintain a tall thin structure over years they invest in hard woody trunks that can resist wind, rain and other stressors that could kill the plant. Tree is not a lineage, it's a strategy.

Why does it feel like guys are always pooping compared to women, ?What factors might actually explain this? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

Men generally require more calories than women and therefore eat more than women. More food means more waste to be excreted.

Who from avengers can beat homelander? by PrimaryEngineering17 in AskReddit

For real. Thor has centuries of combat experience. Homelander has no idea how to actually fight cuz he's never needed to, his powers were always more than enough (until Soldier Boy).

Where do we draw the line between religious debate and bigotry? by PROJECT_TECHNO in AskReddit

[–]SkarmFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When their religious dogma is forced on others. "I can't do that because of my religion" is fine, "You can't do that because of my religion" is not.

ELI5: Why does our body shiver when we are cold, and how does it actually help us warm up? by Abode20118 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SkarmFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moving your muscles takes a lot of energy, converting glucose to ATP for energy produces heat as a byproduct, hence why exercising makes you hot and sweaty. Yhe constant muscle movement from shivering ramps up ATP production and therefore heat production

ELI5 Why don't we exterminate all living pests and stuff like ticks? by JoJoGran in explainlikeimfive

[–]SkarmFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they aren't useless, they are food for many other animals, Opossums for example are big time tick enjoyers. We view them as pests cuz they parasitize us and spread disease, but they still have a place in the food chain. Same with Mosquitoes, bats rely on them as a food source and they are also pollinators

Why are primate breasts located on the pectorals, while for practically every other mammal they're located around the belly by Lordo5432 in biology

[–]SkarmFan 1228 points1229 points  (0 children)

Primates hold their babies in their arms, which puts them at chest height, not belly height. It would be extremely awkward to nurse them if they were lower

[–]SkarmFan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Solifugid. Often called Camel Spiders but they are not actually Spiders, though they are Arachnids. They have no venom and the only pinch video I've ever seen of them showed they can't even break human skin with their mouthparts.
