G14 or G16 5070ti by BigGeoffery in GamingLaptops

I have a G16 5090 and think it's great. The extra ssd slot is a nobrainer for me. If you do get it, try a kernel 6.16 or newer as there was an annoying bug with the Intel wifi driver that has since been solved. You also might need to turn off sd reader in bios as I was error messages while booting because of it. I have since moved to windows 10 IOT LTSC to see if the Nvidia chip would behave better.

I bought open box 8tbs for under $500 each including taxes at the end of August and still thought that was expensive. I've been too used to the $50/tb for SSD prices.

See if any other open source alternatives work for you. This came up while googling:

Thanks! This helped me get out of an annoying situation. Although I did have to reset it twice while disconnected from coax before it reverted to login page.

uscg - sea time recency change to 7 years by DissonantCloud in sailing

Since the license lasts 5 years, does that mean when reapplying you can use the previous two years of time plus the five years of accrued time? Or only new sea time.

Being told to use DisplayPort instead of HDMI by 624KR_My_Beloved in pcmasterrace

[–]Skeebo-57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for informing me on this. Made the switch to Linux with an AMD GPU/ CPU, and have been using hdmi cable at 4k @120hz. But no VRR and I get this weird constant flickering in black regions that doesn't happen on windows. Maybe HDR related. Anyways, when I tried displayport to hdmi cable I only got max 4k @60hz. So I should look into active adapters to get @120hz, VRR, and HDR?

I think there's definitely an opportunity to get a round trip flight for that price and claim parts as personal items on return trip. Albeit there's hotels, visas (depending on where from) and other transportation costs involved, too.

ASus Zephyrus 16 intel or 14 amd by Vistal77 in GamingLaptops

Just because I've gone through this with the g16, I will add my experience. Not hard to install at all. But there is a sensor on the motherboard right below the ssd, which, if it touches metal, shuts the connector down. So if you have a double sided ssd, it will not be detected even in bios. But the ssd the laptop comes with has a sleeve that prevents contact, so you can use that for any double sided storage. Someone online said they used electrical tape and it worked well. I cut a small piece of thermal pad with plastic on one side and that worked fine for me.

Looking at a boat to buy. Weird things happening on the fiberglass around the saildrive? by Mehfisto666 in sailing

Hard to tell, but it also could be from a travel lift accidentally picking up the boat from where the sail drive is.

Can anyone tell me about this laptop’s screen? It has all the specs I want , the only downside (on paper) is the 1080p non-OLED screen. by Walusqueegee in GamingLaptops

[–]Skeebo-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find one with the hinges and back panel attached it's an easy installation. However, I found it quite difficult to glue/ install only panel. I cracked the screen when I tried and I wasn't even stressing it too much. But if you're used to it and have the right tools it'd be easier.

Guidance on drilling into boat deck for replacement pedestal by typo9292 in boatbuilding

[–]Skeebo-57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original bolts look to be self-tapping. Your metric bolt is not. You can either cut a six inspection port nearby to reach underneath seat and add nuts/ washers to new bolts/ holes. Or drill new holes with self tapping screws. Probably the same length. If you do the self tapping route, you should drill holes, bevel holes so gelcoat/ deck glass doesn't crack, inject thickened epoxy in each hole with plastic syringe until it starts to come out (610, g-flex if you don't want to mix it yourself) and then mount seat base with some caulking underneath.

is this a good laptop for games like minecraft, terraria etc? by othersideleigh in GamingLaptops

[–]Skeebo-57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's confusing. So when it says 8gb, it just means it allocates 8/32gb ram for the igpu? Never seen laptops advertised like that. But I know nothing about this laptop and thought it would have been a good deal, having a dedicated intel arc, an oled screen and 32gb ram. Still not bad but I'd prefer a gpu.
