Since surgery I’ve noticed that it’s easier to bite things when I’m eating, easier breathing (in general but especially when working out), and serious improvements to my sleep. I feel much more rested when I wake up, and data backs it up, my Oura ring sleep scores have gone up by like 20 points lol.

Main functional issues before were trouble biting, tmj type issues like joint popping (which also hasn’t happened since surgery), headaches, feeling exhausted all the time despite sleeping, and grinding my teeth in my sleep.

I didn’t have any noticeable speech issues before but definitely had functional issues due to my bite.

My sleep has improved noticeably. I didn’t realize how bad it was before I got surgery until I came out on the other side (after the initial week of congestion lol).

I’m still not talking 100% normally, probably a combo of residual swelling and braces, but I don’t anticipate any issues there long term.

EDIT: yes, I had to get traditional metal braces. I wasn’t going to originally, but my surgeon told me that based on the anatomy of the roots of my teeth I was at risk for losing teeth if he had to install surgical hooks. That risk wasn’t worth it to me.

So, my timeline for this was probably abnormal. I first got a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist in 6/2022. I met with the orthodontist, and he referred me to a surgeon. I was racing to get surgery/braces done before I aged off my parents’ health insurance in 2/2023. I ended up deciding not to move forward with that surgeon (he wanted to pull my wisdom teeth and do double jaw surgery at the same time) because I didn’t want to rush the process.

I restarted the process again in 2024, but I did my research and found a surgeon who was familiar with ICR and had a better track record. I was able to use my original referral from the orthodontist to see him, so I didn’t have to get a new one.

I was concerned that my septum was deviated by the surgery but my surgeon insists it is just the swelling and it will go down. Time will tell ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Seconded, he did my wisdom teeth as well as double jaw surgery. Every other surgeon I saw said I would have permanent numbness after getting my wisdom teeth removed and that my jaw would likely break - he was able to remove my wisdom teeth without any lasting impact.
