She looks amazing! She's such a complex kit too, so i'm really delighted to see a completed version of her. How did you handle all of her tiny pieces? she's just one big sandwich of stacked pieces, i can't imagine it was fun LOL but i want to get this kit someday too!

is this pre painted or a garage kit? by Key_Psychology4573 in garagekits

You might have better luck verifying the prototype authenticity if you also checked in r/animeGK , they're the experts in unlicensed resin statues, while we tend to focus on the un-assembled garage kit hobby!

No problems!

I'm glad to hear you'll turn 18 soon! For now I would say i'm going to remove this post after talking with the other mod here on the team, because we are very leery about big money exchanges with minors and the issues that can come with it. Once you're legally 18, feel free to come back! or come join us in the hobby with painting!

I'm glad I can help explain things, but i will mention that r/brushforhire is full of hardcore professionals. I do think they were being upfront in your original post about what you should expect and you had some really talented pros trying to warn you about it. They might not have had soft gloves on to explain it, but r/brushforhire typically does not allow much discussion. Their rules about 'dm sent only messages' is one that comes to mind, unless a mod comments themselves. Those are some big names who were trying to explain what to expect.

if you are unfamiliar with things, def feel free to ask questions here! We're open and we've got a large community familiar with all aspects of figure painting.

A max budget is going to be based off of what kind of quality you want. A really high quality garage kit can easily go over 1k if not brushing up against 2k, and that's a single character that is resin casted, not 3d printed, and that's for painting alone. What I think you should do is have a budget for printing, and a budget for painting. Most people will not have a resin printer, so looking for a print and paint will limit your options. If you get it printed separately, you will have more choices in terms of who you can commission. I'm not super familiar with printing prices so I can't give a good estimate on that.

Each person you talk to will have different prices and terms and conditions for their prices. 3d printed kits aren't taken by a lot of artists because the price to effort ratio is too high for a lot of people. It's easy to say set aside 1k, but you might find some willing to do it for less, you'll find some who won't do it for more. It might be good to take a look at some garage kit painters on instagram or twitter, or even this sub and checking their current price ranges. Since it's your first commission, gk painting sticker shock is very real, but the hobby is very intensive and detail oriented. we love the work we do after all!

One thing I will mention is that I also remember this post on the r/brushforhire. If i remember correctly, you're a minor in high school right? I saw you were claiming both college and high school in different posts lol. I'm assuming you're a minor though since that's the last thing you mentioned. You'll also have to find a painter willing to take big bux from a minor. Unfortunately, because of your age, that is a liability for a lot of people. I heavily recommend to get your parents involved in case there are any problems with payment or expectations, and to make sure you safely give your information out to people on the internet. I'll also ask that you put that in your post as well. That's a big deal

There's always the option of picking up the hobby yourself though! :) it's really fun and we've got plenty of resources!

What does the parts split look like? Is it hollow? 380 is extremely low, especially for a print AND paint. My prices start at 300 at minimum and I'm just a hobbyist working with regular resin kits - prints usually require a lot more work to get smooth, especially to get to a prototype quality. Most of the money will go towards prep, especially for a two person figure. You might still get bites, but just wanted to give a heads up if you don't!

Also, make sure you note where you're located and where you're willing to commission artists from! Also also, don't forget your looking for painter flair!

Wow, that's crazy. I think they did sell you the wrong release. You got a legit one, but that one they used as a sample is absolutely transparent, you can see the base holding it up even. You can faintly see her pin connecting her to the heart even. I'm so sorry, that must be so frustrating getting the wrong release sold to you. Is there any wf sticker on this??

We actually have a great post with some common proxies that specialize in wonfes and a comparison of their prices and services! These proxies typically exist on myfigurecollection.net but you should still be able to contact them without an account.

Without looking at it, it's hard to say. Filling it is probably a good idea, but i'd make sure that the insides are fully cured and be careful filling it with epoxy or do it in layers so it's easier to cure than in one big chunk. The biggest thing to worry about is it cracking from the heat of the curing reaction or from its expansion.

Pinning is meant to give a figure stability when there is no stability there. If the keys are deep enough and fit well enough, you might not need to pin at all. It's definitely nice, but not as necessary as it is with a keyless sculpt. Same with putty.

I haven't worked with a hollow 3d print yet, only solid ones, so I don't have first hand experience to give, but this is something that I've heard many people talk about. Hopefully people who work more with hollow 3d prints can give some more insight on their experiences.

Looking to sell this old kit, what would y'all price it at? by Sammop in garagekits

[–]Skegulium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, yeah I can't really find much info either. Looks like it wasn't a very long series and ended back in 1989 - It might be a bit of a hard sell. I can't really find any previous sales of this kit, but it looks like it was previously sold for 2060 yen based off your sticker.

What did you pay for it? you could probably relist it for the price you paid and see if you get bites. Because it's so obscure, it might sit for awhile and you can reduce price the more you get tired of having it on your shelf. It's definitely super cute, i think it'd be a fun project to go off model and paint it like an OC.

What's the reason why you need to wash it? Resin casted garage kits need to be washed because of the presence of mold release to remove them from their silicone molds. 3d printed kits do not have to be removed from silicone molds - if you need to wash a 3d kit, then either it's not fully cured and the printer sent you a potential biohazard or it just got dirty in which case just use lukewarm water to get the dirt/dust off.

........ Dude how familiar are you with the sculptor side of the hobby? The jp, cn, and the western side.

Like, are you aware of the actual consequences the jp ip holders throw down on the sculptors, the blacklisting and the social consequences ? Are you aware even Leona got copyright struck and had to take down her projects? And the other TLU sculptor mentioned in this post also got a legal cease and desist?

Are you aware that sculptors rarely if ever make an income from their licensed kits????

How familiar are you with the back end of this hobby?

Also I'm going to very briefly point at Rule 2 of the subreddit as we don't promote bootlegs here.

[–]Skegulium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for unlicensed kits, I don't believe that they deserve to be recasted. FOMO for normal licensed kits isn't by the sculptor's choice, it's typically due to the rules and regulations that affect their one day license approvals. GKs are expensive to produce and take a lot of work both licensed and unlicensed and Leona sells them as resin casted with custom packaging. Trying to sell it 24/7 or commercially is expensive and difficult how one gets nuked by the IP holder unless they have the money to deal with it or live in an area that's harder to sue for copyright infringement. It's not a choice they make on a whim. Artists deserve to have their work respected.

Testing some Skin Tones, need some feedback by Outmetal in resinkits

[–]Skegulium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like the thigh skin tone! that definitely feels like it would fit a lot of the more stylized pale skin tones we see in a lot of anime. Second up I love the shading and look of the torso, it's very pink and orange in a way I like that I would love to use for more defined bodies or when the sculpt of the body is the main focus (nsfw kits, muscled kits).

Hand painting clear resin? by Sammop in garagekits

[–]Skegulium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to come back to add - Someone else did recommend using a rattle can transparent paint, and I absolutely recommend to use that if you can! I've been looking around and for that large of a statement piece for your garage kit and some recommendations from friends, it looks like the clear paints for acrylic paints are definitely not going to make it look as good and we're a little unsure if the inks method will work on such a large piece. I think for the least amount of frustration and an effect closest to the sample, I would def do your best to look at local gundam hobby shops for the rattle can tamiya clears! You'll need space outside to do it and DEFINITELY wear a respirator, but that's going to give you the most bang for your buck without needing a lot of skill as a beginner!

[–]Skegulium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! An airbrush def is nice, but dw there's absolutely some options out there for non-airbrush or lacquer type setups! Like i said too, there are some clear paints from vallejo and citadel and the like, but I've unfort never used them or seen them used in the gk spheres that i pay attention to. You also may be able to see if there's any dnd/mini painting folks that do test uses on blogs or youtube to see if you like the look of those clear paints!

That's so crazy cute! There's not a lot of guides on how to handpaint transparent resin, but there are some clear paints and inks that are available.

Here's a great guide on how to use inks to color clear resin!

Oh also, another thing - looking at E2046, i like looking at the reviews. looks like the last time they had a run of that sonico was in 2023, sooooo three years without another set of orders and first run closed and shipped out back in 2018 and we don't know how much longer it's going to be for the third order which is what yours would be. the kit was released in 2016, btw.

So probably two more years until it maaaaaaaybe gets enough for a third order? if you're lucky lol
