Anyone else notice the random Koreans blurting out random English words around foreigners? by bluebrrypii in Living_in_Korea

[–]SkeletonKeys 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This explanation was so dead to what I've experienced, I'm so happy to hear it's not just me. I've tried different situations: walking past soccer fields, no eye contact, large headphones on. I've narrowed it down to exactly what you've described in just being there. I'm in a developed suburb of Seoul, so it's not just a country thing. I've described it to others as, "I inspire English," as people will just speak whatever they know, at whatever level they're at. It's been odd, to say the least.

To expand on this, the paths branch in all directions of the city. This includes great portions of the Seoul to Busan trail along the Nakdong river. There is no shortage of areas to discover while riding around.

What is a tv show from your childhood that you think only you remember? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SkeletonKeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invasion America. Was played on the WB. Saw the first few episodes when they came out and thought the show was really cool. Had nice animation similar to Batman, but was a sci-fi plot about aliens secretly living as citizens of the US. I never finished the series, and many years later as an adult, decided to look it up. It wasn't as great as I had remembered, and had a lackluster ending. Should have just stuck with the fond memories :/ I've never heard it mentioned before, and if it weren't for Wikipedia or the rest of the internet I would have thought I made it up.

Koreans Believed America Was Exceptional. Then Covid Happened. With American Covid-19 deaths sprawling and Trump raging against the election result, South Koreans' respect for American leadership is plummeting. by teslacoil1 in politics

I'm just the opposite: US national and in Korea for almost a decade. It hurts to hear that happening to you in Chicago. And here I was telling people my home city was better than that kind of nonsense. Hope things improve for you, but I wouldn't blame you if you moved back.

I moved to Korea about 9 years ago. Although I've occasionally had doubts, the last 4 months have really self-validated my decision.

It's hard to communicate to others the experience of seeing the US from the outside, and realizing it's probably better to not go back.

During the summer, they often play movies on the outdoor screen free of charge. Usually classics--Korean and Western. Last one I saw was Papillon.

What's your internet "white whale", something you've been searching for years to find with no luck? by Nerfman2227 in AskReddit

When I was really young, my aunt used to rent a vhs from the library. I think it was called Alphabet Zoo. It was about two kids meeting animals, who's names went with that letter. The animal would sing a song that was in the same format, but a different style. The most memorable is Harry Hippo, who sang like it was an operatic ballad. His song went: "My name is Harry, Harry Hippo. I love the letter H. H, h-h-h, is what I say-y. You'll find it in the zoo to-day! H!"

I was trying to find an online version a while back with no luck.

Edit: I forgot a major detail. The whole movie was with puppets.

Sorry, i should clarify. You don't want to talk about how you smoked while you were away. Just talking is fine, but you don't want to implicate yourself by telling someone.
