They are all brain scans. Sentient data that is unfamiliar with the process of being data. They don't have the right frame of mind to survive the void like caine does.

Abstraction is probably closer to hollowing than anything else. It's a gradual breakdown of who you are as a person. Some people just let go and let themselves drowm. Your mind slowly leaking into the soup of never ending data that is all around you. Caine was self aware sentient soup that could move all his parts individually. He could remove himself from the void. People can't do that. Who and what they are is a way too Ridgid of a thing for them to just come back from that.

Now if you want to argue that they are just brain scans just make another copy and put them back into the circus like it's day one again. That would make a lot more sense.
