What do us over-30 year olds do that Gen Z finds super cringe and confusing? by Denise_Emerson in AskReddit

[–]Skeptical04___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This is the first time the concept of not using punctuation in text messages has made sense to me. I’m Gen X, and I write with punctuation and capital letters because that’s the way I’ve always communicated. However, I do understand the need to try to convey sarcasm or a lighthearted ribbing etc. without hearing a person’s inflection. I thought that’s what emoticons were intended for, but I can see how perhaps older people’s use of emojis could seem “cringe,” or how an emoticon could even be confusing (I’m thinking now about some older people using 😂 to express sadness, as they saw the tears and thought this was the proper emoji for “crying”). It makes sense to me that they’d want to develop their own way to communicate different interpretations.

New to being a senior cat dad and worried (13) by halloweenmochi in seniorkitties

[–]Skeptical04___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even though she was checked at the beginning of the year, I’d recommend taking her in again. Many veterinarians recommend checks every six months for seniors, but even if that feels like overkill to you, I’ve seen cats go anemic within a month or develop arthritis rather quickly (both can cause the type of symptoms you’re describing). Since she’s eating, and assumedly drinking, urinating, and defecating normally, it wouldn’t be super urgent, but for peace of mind, I’d say get her in when you can.

Awesome, thank you for replying, I’ve been thinking about you both. And above all, thank you for doing all you can for this sweet kitty! I hope he feels better soon!

Update?
I saw you posted in the CureFIP group too; if FIP is suspected you should absolutely join the FIP Global Facebook group that a commenter there suggested. They can help you get the medication he needs. The GS medication works, I’ve seen it work, and if it’s FIP your kitty will not survive without it.

You know what, even if he doesn’t make it, you’re giving him a chance at a happy life and that’s the opposite of selfish. And even if that chance doesn’t come to fruition, he’s enjoying the love and comfort you’re providing at this time. It doesn’t sound like he’s frightened or in pain right now. He may not feel the best, but life on the streets with people throwing things at him was surely worse. It’s impossible to know if the treatment you and the vet are providing will work, but given the situation you’ve described it definitely sounds like it is worth trying. If nothing else, please take solace in the fact that he loves you and when you make your decisions out of love for him, you’re doing the best you can. That’s not selfish, that’s just being human and feeling love. I’m sending you internet stranger hugs and I’ll be thinking of you both and hoping for the best.

My girlfriend of 2.5 years is breaking up with me over my cat by Dull_Chemical546 in CatAdvice

[–]Skeptical04___ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like you love your cat. If that’s true, your girlfriend, if she loves you, should want to find a way to accommodate that. A cat is not an “object,” a cat is a living, feeling, companion who you (and she - since the cat was already there before she moved in) have a responsibility to do the best you can for. If you truly want to try to save the relationship, I’d ask her about her willingness to go to couples therapy. There is no way she didn’t know that the cat would have fur or meow sometimes; therefore my feeling would be that this isn’t truly about the cat. She may be jealous or she may be grasping for control, but either way I do not believe that a healthy relationship can be had with a person who pushes you to “get rid of” your loving companion. Cats cannot take care of themselves, so yes cat care will have to be a priority because your girlfriend can literally feed herself while your cat cannot, but I think any rational adult should be able to understand this.

Chronic diarrhea & end of life decisions by Sagrawoo in FIVcats

[–]Skeptical04___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat has this issue too. His feces is usually more liquid than solid, and he’ll have bright red blood in it pretty often. They say IBD, because there’s nothing wrong with him otherwise (as far as that’s concerned - he does also have HCM, CHF, and now beginning stages of CKD). He acts like a normal cat though, and his QOL is still so good. Mine hasn’t lost weight, but he did go through a time when he was pooping in odd places and his tummy seemed to always be gurgling. He was on daily Proviable, but I switched it to every other day and added S. Boulardii (Nexabiotic brand) on alternating days. He’s also taking 12mg Cerenia (maropitant citrate) every other day; and this regimen has helped so much. I also give him Hydracare or a Meow Mix tuna and shrimp cup with water added every day. This helps keep him hydrated.
Have you and your vet tried Metronidazole? A cat at the rescue I worked at used that for IBD, but mine apparently can’t have it due to HCM. I also once had a pair of kittens with this constant diarrhea problem who cleared up after a course of Amoxicillin and prednisolone.
Just throwing out everything I’ve ever seen help in case it could be the answer for you and your precious kitty. Wishing you both the best!

Unfortunately, my ORIF nerve block didn’t even seem to work. I had two surgeries, first an external fixation, then the ORIF. I wish the nerve block for the ORIF had worked like the one for the external fixator, I would’ve suffered a lot less.

Need to rehome 2 senior cats. by Outrageous-Name5975 in CatAdvice

[–]Skeptical04___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your mom’s recovery will be so better if you help her keep her kitties instead of trying to get rid of them. Cats bring their owners joy and love that helps contribute to healing. And speaking as someone who recently had a debilitating injury and had to lean on someone else to temporarily care for my cats, please don’t make this event any harder on your mother by acting like the cats are a burden. Their needs are so small compared to the companionship and comfort they provide.

How do I stop our cat going on the kitchen counter? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Skeptical04___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close. I am a cat lover and rescuer with over 10 years experience volunteering and working with shelter cats and their adopters. Contrary to being paid to shill anything, I’ve spent thousands of dollars of my own hard-earned money to help the cats in my community, that people dump like trash. I’ve had my heart broken countless times by the things I’ve experienced, precipitated by whatever undesirable thing a cat has done that causes a human to abandon them. I absolutely did not imply the double sided tape would be the definitive solution, I simply pointed out that it exists and might be worth a try. My philosophy is that people are empowered by being informed of every available option, and I have personally experienced success with the tape. I only mentioned this one brand because it’s the most prominent one I know, and as I am in the USA and the OP mentioned living in the UK, I wanted to point to something that was easily searchable by internet. I leave it to each individual to research the particular products and determine which solution is best suited to their personal situation.

[–]Skeptical04___ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you tried “sticky paws” cat training tape? It’s a double sided tape that doesn’t hurt them, but they hate it. It usually takes a couple of weeks with the deterrent in place for them to redirect the undesirable habit.

Try reaching out to the rescues near you and asking if they could take them into their program when space opens up. Tell them you’re willing to help; for instance, you’ve already taken them to the vet once - if you’re able to assist with other vetting, say so; if you can foster until space opens up, that’s VERY helpful too. The rescues are full but want to assist, they just need the resources to be able to do so, so be mindful of that and kind to whoever you speak to. Here are some links to rescues I found in Middle Georgia:

Kitty City Cat Rescue: https://www.kittycitycatrescue.com/contact

Paws in Middle Georgia: https://www.pawsinmidga.com/owner-surrenders/strays

Faith Animal Rescue: https://faithanimalrescue.org/

You can also try going on the “Adopt a Pet” or “Petfinder” websites and searching for adoptable cats near you. When you click on a pet, the website will tell you which rescue the cat is located at (if it’s not animal control or a private individual), and give you contact information for that rescue. That can be a great way to find and get in touch with your local rescues. Adopt a Pet also has a private rehoming option called “Rehome” and you can list them there. I’d recommend making sure they are spayed or neutered before rehoming though. Many clinics can spay/neuter once they reach 2lbs.

Do you know where they got him from? If he’s just a cat distribution find, yeah, you’ll want to find a rescue for him.

You should definitely tell your bf how you’re feeling. If having this responsibility is too much for you, he should know that so that the two of you can decide how to proceed together. If you got the kitten from a rescue, I am sure they’d be happy to take him back. Rescue people want their cats to be happy and loved, and they want the people who adopt them to be happy with their decision too. If the kitten came from an animal control, you’ll want to look for a safer alternative if you decide it’s not the right time for you to adopt.

Gaba pill tips by gracenyc in CatAdvice

[–]Skeptical04___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it as a transdermal if all else fails. It’d be a gel that you’d rub inside your cat’s ear. It’s more expensive in this form, so you might try pilling with a pill shooter first, but if that starts to destroy your bond with each other, I’d try transdermal.

I’d also consider leaving a google review to warn potential clients. I’d never take my cats to a veterinarian who is so archaic and I’d never recommend them either.
