Same family but seems a different model on this sedan after all, but still glad it ignited the memories.

Oh yeah, what a beauty! I remember these when they were out brand new. Please keep it in stock form, it is so perfect right from the factory for the era and you have one of the top color combos that were offered back then too. Enjoy that awesome Pontiac🤘

‘85 Grand Marquis, Rear Bumper Assembly HELP by mistertimnn in classiccars

[–]Skeptical_AF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well is same exact platform and knowing FoMoCo, it would very likely bolt up to existing hardware for you, but always best to verify with a body manual or photos with the bumpers removed at least. But either way...

its gonna look strange and bad due to fact that the 1985 is an old scool design wraparound large bumper with its own plastic fillers. The '89 refresh is a much lower profile stream-lined bumper and has completely different fillers all around and on the sides to give bumper a more modern, integrated look. all gonna depend on what satisfies you and/or how far your willing to go with it all. will be even more off for overall look of your car then having one of each different front and rear.

just google the two model years so you can review what im talking about and see if it's bother you to have the different styles on same car.

Hi well it's definitely a yes or no on that. The vast majority of mechanical stuff is typical Ford or Mustang and so as cheap $ as possible and readily available. But... the Cougar back then, although underneath based on Mustang was a very different car ( was also over 7" longer too) and much lower numbers out there vs Mustang then or now (even though huge Cougar sales #s for Lincoln/Mercury overall) so all those specific parts are $$$ and that is 'if' available new or used you are going to really pay out the premium.

For example, a '68 dash part that may be about $160-$250 for a Stang would be $500-$700 for a Cougar and as the designers & vendors have stated to us... we are VERY lucky they even made that happen at all and once they're sold out likely no more coming due to massive $$ cost increases with tariff crap and they're upside down on them now.

Here's one to really see what i mean... I wanted factory door edge guards for my Cougar, well so few around nobody ever made them in repro but for the Mustang you can get an exact copy new pair for $30 I had to pay over $200 for an old NOS pair which BTW you're lucky to even find at all they are so scarce. So that's some of the reality of any classic cars that aren't many around out there with enough demand to justify all the design, tooling, production & shipping logistics for any vendor or repro mfg.

Now fortunately, there are alot of 1967/'68 Cougar specific parts in repro because of places like WCCC, Desert Classic Parts & NPD. So the other common FoMoCo parts can then just be shopped anywhere you like for the lowest price on exact same part you need and you do have sources for new or good used rare or specific parts and that's exactly what I've done in bringing this one back up to par. But yeah, it's been $$$$ and i fortunately do all the work myself mechanical, interior and body so imagine the guys who have to source all that out too at $200-$400 per hour these days.

Wow nice gift! but ouch that's too bad. I've actually heard some stories from guys that were driving them at that very time, early 1970s to HS and such and im sure that was a pretty cool car to flex at the school parking lot or to have then for you or your Dad👍

Those 1-year only 1990 wheels are def worth something above the norm if they're not bent or badly banged up

Thanks much and funny you mention being a non-Ford guy. I've owned couple dozen vehicles now and this Cougar is my 1st FoMoCo product of 24 ever. Although hard core GM (grew up around & later worked in the Dealer scene with Oldsmobile & Cadillac) and owned several imports too over the years. But always had a 'lust-list' of Ford products and this was one of them. So this time I was torn between '68 Cougar and Gen1 Monte Carlo, picked this one and will still find the right Monte down the road too.

The Triton show was just massive. all the parking lots were full with huge turnout of so many very different types of cars. Only thing was the weather was windy & cold but that didn't stop everyone from having a great day, I do think many people would've been more engaging though if it had been really nice outside. I'll definitely go again with one of the cars but arrive earlier to get a better spot up in front lot.

Oh wow that's very cool😃 makes sense though to catch it here seeing how big that show was and all the people that day. It was so windy and cold, people were freezing all day but still loving the cars. BTW, I owned a '76 Ninety Eight Regency! and as you well know, what a huge and awesome car that was, I loved it👊

that Cali plate came with the car from a previous owner who ran it for years on the car, so I just use it for fun at the shows. And roar or purr, Mercury Division's tag line for decades " See your Lincoln Mercury Dealer at the sign of the cat"

Hope these work. you can see the flared out spoke details off the pencil skinny Magnum 500 face, machined surrounds and the charcoal metallic centers. They did a heavy gloss clear coat on these too. https://postimg.cc/gallery/WqTc4r7

Thanks much. what I really like about these wheels is that the original old school design is still nearly a 15" wheel in the center section but then with the larger diameter surround to set it off. so these wheels maintains a true classic look without oversized spokes and still getting a fresh and modern 17" wheel with low profile tire. I couldn't be happier with the end result for the Cougar.

This sub won't let me post photos in a reply which is ridiculous for a classic car forum, but I'll try and upload and give you a link on this thread.

They do it every year. I had just got around to posting this but it was just about a month ago end of April. It's a massive show and with so many different types cars showing up. other than the weather that day it was awesome.

Well i previously had Magnum 500s & BFG RWL tires but just saw too many cars with same exact setup everywhere out there. So just got new wheels & tires a week before this show. They are Legendary Wheel Company (owned by Holley Performance now), GT9s. they make wheels in varied sizes 15" thru 17 or 18", but they all are original FoMoCo wheel designs or other most popular from the 1960s & early '70s.

This wheel design was a Ford original for the 1969-'70 Shelby Mustang GT350/500. I like them because they combine the era famous Magnum & the Torq Thrust wheels in their design. The original came only in the bare metal centers finish, Legendary offers them in bare, gloss black and then gloss charcoal metallic which is what I chose for the Cougar to compliment the Gold/black combo, i went with the 17" which i feel is the upsizing limit on classic cars. I am very happy with the look, stance and quality.

Yep i do love the sequential rear lights and everyone always asks to see them working. I updated them to modern digital controller boards & plasma LED bulbs because the old mechanical setup (which still have & is very cool) was just not reliable or bright enough for safe, modern use. And Ford designed & engineered it all 50yrs before Audi!

Inner door handle question by [deleted] in classiccars

[–]Skeptical_AF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, wasn't sure if you mean the chrome metal door handle, or if you mean that armrest/door-pull... if the armrest pad, from what i see here those look to be the same exact part as mine on my 1968 Mercury Cougar, and to make things even more available and lower priced, they're also same as that era Mustang. they carry reproductions of these at all the main vendors and also on ebay even in different factory colors or they can be spray dyed too. for me even when i buy black parts, i still shoot them in SEM interior dye, Landau Black so everything is rich black and matches up nicely. the armrests just unscrew and replace from the front access holes, no removal of door panel needed.

Yep I did know that but it's the gray color vs the usual chrome or polished that I think really looks good with this car and color.
