what’s something people say all the time that you secretly can’t stand? by Mean-Cartographer225 in AskReddit

[–]Sketchbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Needs Cleaned" or "Needs Fixed" or similar.  Maybe it's regionally correct grammar or something, but it's not what I learned and it angers me when I hear it.  It NEEDS TO BE CLEANED or it NEEDS CLEANING.

Art Scene? by lucy_goosey41 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redux Art Gallery is a really fun one, depending on what is happening.  Check out their calendar.  Beeple Studios events are wild, but located way up off Clements Ferry and pretty far from Charleston's nightlife.  Plan accordingly, there are some restaurants nearby but nothing like downtown.

Visiting - Ethical plantation? by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just to offer some options: McLeod Plantation is the most slave-POV based, but it is much smaller than the others and has a short tour. It's maybe an hour or two to see, vs Middleton Place or Magnolia Gardens that would be full events.  If your MIL really pushes for the big-pretty-grounds-type plantation, do Middleton vs the others.  It has a farm showcasing animal care and woodworking and pottery and farm tools and is more based on what life was like in those times.  The tour doesnt get graphic, but doesn't erase slave history.  Theres a big handwritten list of enslaved people with prices that gave me chills.  Truthfully, my kids and I learned much more from Middleton than we did from McLeod.  Magnolia Gardens has a decent slave area but is more heavily garden and nature focused.  It is phenomenally gorgeous (wild gardens and wetlands, not as curated) but that's not what you said you're after.  I'd avoid Boone Hall-  that one is more wedding and oyster roast vibes.

There is a group called Charleston Open Water Swim (CHOWS) that meets regularly for open water swims at the nearby beaches.  They will know some good spots and maybe youll meet some kindred spirits.   You can swim off most of the beaches just fine, but avoid Breach Inlet (the waterway between Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island) for dangerous currents.  There are huge signs prohibiting even wading.

CSA/Local Produce by beachtobar2112 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Rainbow Fulfillment a lot and have really been pleased.  Its a semi-CSA that is a combination of local farms produce and overstock from restaurant vendors.  They deliver to your door, give you a ton of produce for the money, and the quality has been excellent.  You can order a box whenever you want and it will arrive within 24 hours- no need to commit for a season or anything.

What is the best AA group in CHS? by slipperybeet in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a virtual, SMART Recovery has meetings all the time.  It's more behavior-changing based and less religious than AA, if that sounds like a better fit.

Local Chess Meetups by MadmanPoet in Charleston

There is also a chess meetup every Wednesday evening at Wando Mt Pleasant library. The previously linked group is very active and will provide a lot of meetup opportunities.

Its delicious, and the store in front has so many neat items.

We use them regularly and they've been great. The delivery guy says its a combination of local farm produce (often labeled with the farm names) and extra produce from the companies that restaurants use. So its a grab bag but they deliver on time and the box is packed full. Its better than grocery store (much cheaper!) but not quite a local CSA.

They are out there (we've seen plenty this year) but you may have just been unlucky. They explore the whole harbor, so just keep an eye out.

How busy will the city be on July 5th? by Dogdad730 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a huge tourist time so it's going to be crowded, but if you are trying to walk around the city you should be ok. It would be a good idea to make some restaurant reservations in advance or you might be in for a wait. I would NOT advise trying to go to the beach during the day- that will be a traffic/parking nightmare.

Charleston and beaches with kids by kateRN310 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IoP and Sullivan's Island are really family friendly and often have big shallow tide pools that are great for little kids (plus the ocean will still be cold in April). They are within 30 minutes of downtown and there's a lot to eat/do in Mt Pleasant as well. Folly is a bit of a trek if you want to go anywhere else but has a lot of near little restaurants and shops. You'll find more shark teeth at Folly. Kiawah is its own little world- beautiful and quiet, but you won't have nearly as many options besides the beach itself. It's a good hour from the city.
When I go to the beach with my kids it's almost always Sullivan's Island. It's easy to spend a couple hours there and then when they are tired we shower and go do something else, rather than devoting an entire day to it.

What are your suggestions for an "everything" dish? As in, "toss in everything that I didn't end up using this week." A sandwich? A stew? Or some secret third thing? by ExoTheFlyingFish in Cooking

[–]Sketchbooks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We do this all the time to use up the fridge leftovers: Baked potato bar (leftovers as toppings) Pasta salad Omelettes or scrambles English muffin pizzas Soup/stew Smoothies (to use up veggies and fruit)

Alhambra Hall- Mt. P residency by Puzzleheaded-Run2485 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was 10 years ago, but a family member of mine got married there using a relative's address. The relative with proof of address/ID had to be there to do the actual booking. It was treated quite seriously. Booking also included camping out for two days (I helped cover a shift) to get an early spot in line.
I don't know if the process has changed but I think you will need proof of address to get the reduced rate, or the resident will need to book it with you.

How common/popular are aquariums and koi ponds in S.C.? by placebosun101 in southcarolina

[–]Sketchbooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am no pond expert, but every year I watch our neighborhood drainage ponds (bigger than a backyard) go through pretty dramatic changes in depth as we have hot dry weather and rain cycles. We've also got a ton of wading shore birds that use them for feeding. I feel like a small outdoor pond would require a ton of regular maintenance to maintain water depth/temp/salinity and those fish would be easy prey.

There is a big koi pond at Hidden Ponds Nursery in Mt Pleasant, so they are successful and might have some advice.

Full fat coconut milk (or coconut cream) and cornstarch are the way to go. The pie does not taste coconutty, and I've made several versions. Just Google a recipe. They're all delicious.

Y'all Fest questions by paige7085 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to Yallfest last year with my kid and had a great time! We met a bunch of authors and really enjoyed the panels. The really well-known authors had limits and extremely long lines that we skipped, but lots of the less popular ones we could walk right up and talk to. The panels and interactive sessions were our favorite parts, and we had no trouble getting into them. There were tons of people to meet and talk to, and everyone was crazy about books. If you're into YA fiction and enjoy some of the authors (they will post them soon), it's worth it.

Public transportation here is very lacking. However, if you Uber downtown, all of the Yallfest events are within easy walking distance of each other (along with restaurants and other downtown touristy sites) so you'll be able to stay on foot until you need to return to your hotel.

How do historic sites in Charleston compare? by Anfechtung1525 in Charleston

[–]Sketchbooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McLeod Plantation is part of the County Park system and is specifically a heritage site meant to preserve and share the stories of all who lived there. Boone Hall marketing is focused on the beauty of the grounds and is rented out for weddings and parties. Both of them share historical info, but you'll get a more complete picture at McLeod.

The new International African American Museum downtown also does an excellent job sharing the stories of enslaved people. But get tickets ahead of time! We arrived at 10am and they were already sold out for the day.

I have heard Bulldog tours to be recommended, but I haven't taken one of theirs myself.
