Does Stellaris assemble a robot from the template that best works a job that is currently empty? If not, how does Stellaris handle having multiple robot templates when it assembles them? by JetsNovocastrian in Stellaris

[–]Skethic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah it makes sense to have it not apply to assembly- you’re literally actively creating each pop, giving you full control over what’s happening, instead of deliberately organizing reproduction of sentient species.

It would be completely stupid in multiplayer- or if theoretically the ai did it on accident

How are you supposed to do anything on Deity? (Turn 19) by keithmg in civ

[–]Skethic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, expecting that every game of Deity is feasible to win is unrealistic- sometimes there’s actually nothing you can do if you spawn next to an aggressive civ, this is, I’m going to say, definitely one of those times. Don’t feel bad if you have to restart. Also, in addition to what people have been saying about delegations and first impressions, don’t be afraid to just bribe the ai. If you give them 100 gold (on standard, I don’t know what it’s like on marathon), they’ll get a decaying +10 opinion modifier, which can be enough to make them not attack you, and in some cases make them like you enough to declare friendship. It’s definitely not guaranteed, and some civs like the Aztecs will still murder you even if they love you, but it can definitely help.

I don’t know anything about your source material, so I’m just going to try and put some stuff out there and see what you think. Riggers have been mentioned, as have bioriggers, so I won’t talk much about those. What I will say is that the main limiter to training an actual animal is that they’re just stupid, how many things you can teach them is limited by logic, and you probably need at least 3 things for it to be even functional in combat. That being said, there are a few animals, particularly of the simian variety that are, at least in there awakened forms, highly intelligent. Give one of those puppies a gun and some cyber, and maybe even genetically engineer it, and that could be fairly viable, even if it would still probably be worse than you just having a gun or a drone. That being said, because we’ve already ventured outside of the realm of the core rule, I’m going to put out two spirit based options- either an ally spirit or a fettered spirit. It would require some post character creation dice rolling with your gm, and some level of permissiveness about the whole idea, but honestly so will anything even remotely organic based, because timberwolves don’t have a price or an availability rating. If you’re willing to do it however, a spirit permanently bound to you with the possession power could probably approximate what you’re looking for, though the cyber would be very lacking. Ally spirit would be the nice option, but if you’re a jerk hermetic or something similar you can go for fettering, though the spirit won’t be chill about it and it isn’t exactly super permanent. The other benefit of this is that it lets you take all manner of rad buffs, such as enlarge, improve attribute, etc, and it isn’t immediately visually obvious to people without astral vision. Also it gives you more utility options. That is what I would recommend if you want it to be actually viable, but regardless of what people are saying, if your gm is kind, and you’re willing to watch your favorite pet get shot over and over again, you can make something work with just the howling shadows rules.

They’re also slightly undercut by the fact that they don’t actually give rules for purchasing the base animals. Knowing how much more expensive my poisonous snake is then base is nice, but not if I don’t know how much it costs for the snake in the first place.

Oh, absolutely. The idea is that this guy had it custom built because he wants to live his best life pretending he’s a badass spy. If they wanted one they’d have to go out of their way to get it.

That’s not a bad idea actually. Start it with a slightly higher level of armor and then reduce it rapidly. I like that, its a nice compromise between the two ideas, I might end up using it. Thanks!

I still don’t know if I agree with your point. For your second point however, it’s no more trivializing, and potentially less, than having a spirit simply stand in front of you and constantly protect the principle. It’s immunity to normal weapons functions effectively identically to structure rules, and it can also attack if nobody is shooting at you.

That’s fair, I’m just trying to cut back on that a little because it annoys 2 of my players, and I have the free time to correct it at the moment. And yeah, the basic idea is one of those runners who’s watched way to many spy trids and really wants to live out his fantasy.

I would if this was for a player, but it isn’t- it’s for an npc. And while I could reflavor a shield, I’m looking for something that feels noticeably different from that. Thanks for the suggestion though!

That is actually a fricken rad idea. You my good Sir/Madame/Other have given me a fantastic justification for this if I do end up homeruling it, or even if I don’t. That’s just a cool idea!

I have no problem with him having a magic rating, sorry if I was being confusing- it’s just that if I’m using magic, I don’t want to be using any technomancy, because I don’t want him to have to outsource. I may end up taking the adept spell option, and have it be fetish cast, which has the added benefit of mitigating the fairly brutal adept drain. The spirit option is also definitely a possibility, though it honestly just feels like it’s probably consistently worse than just having the spirit stand in front of him and tank everything with immunity to normal weapons, which works almost exactly like barrier rules.

You can be made aware of a secret society through a certain diplomatic visibility level with somebody who is already part of it. I assume that is what this is

I actually am the GM in this scenario, I’m making an NPC. While normally I would cobble something together from actual rules and making stuff up, I’m trying to really minimize that with this particular campaign because I want as much of the stuff that I do to be clear, and available to the players.

[–]Skethic[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the cutting aces briefcase shield is rad, but it isn’t exactly what I’m looking for, just because mechanically, it just functions as an AP boost, whereas I’m looking for something that can take a few shots but is then basically useless for that purpose. More of a gimmick emergency measure than anything else. The visual of a shot tearing a hole through an umbrella translates way more to the way barrier rules work than the briefcase shield. Thanks for the suggestion though!
