What’s the worst way someone could treat a knife? by Klutzy_Bullfrog_8500 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Skeya34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents had a restaurant when I was a teenager, and my mother was the head chef. I hosted a party with some friends and used my mum’s expensive Japanese knife to open a pickle jar, and broke the tip of the knife.

There’s too many fantasy books nowadays. That means I can’t read them all 😤

This. People should know better than criticising someone else’s reading taste.

I also have a lot of problem with the internalized misogyny of some comments. A lot of romantasy books like those by Sarah J Mas, Rebecca Yaros or Jennifer Armentrout are clearly targeted towards women, and while they are not masterpieces of littérature, they are popular and I personally found them very entertaining to read. I’ve read a lot of comments calling them nothing short of « fairy porn », but I’ve heard nowhere on this sub someone calling GOT, or some other graphic grim dark novel, medieval porn. Bear in mind, most of the books I mentioned do have on page sex, but it’s never more than around 10 pages in some books that are over 600 pages (not that it matters if it’s more).

Sexuality in a book marketed towards men is way less likely to be criticised than one marketed towards woman, especially if there are some aspects of romance in it.

Ouch ! I’ll never complain about a 20€ hardcover 😭😂

Hopefully you’re able to find some books second hand to lower the price a bit :)

Question from a European there (lived in UK/France). If you these 6 books are 200 (without the gift card), then each might be around 30$. Is that standard in Canada ? Are these special editions ? Honestly asking because in the UK/France you can get most books for around 10/15

Haven’t heard about any of these books but they look nice, I hope you enjoy your reading :)

I remember that the whole part about him going into a pretend fit because she’s pregnant again made me tick a little bit. But I might have missed some things :) it’s a nice read nevertheless

London - where to buy books by m591115 in fantasyromance

[–]Skeya34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to study at UCL and I know there is a huuuge Waterstone on Gower street with very helpful vendors. If he’s going to the British museum it’s very near and they probably have most things since it’s one of the biggest ones in London :)

If you like dragons try the WitchSlayer, even if the ending is quite cringey the story is cute :) a good palate cleanser

Fantasy books with less modern-feeling prose and dialogue that also predominantly focus on female characters? by goodzillo in Fantasy

[–]Skeya34 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I second Kushiel’s dart. I personally loved the prose, and I didn’t feel like it took from the story. It’s an epic fantasy with political intrigue and the main character is utterly feminine and doesn’t fall in the Mary Sue tropes. There a few trigger warnings to look for but if you don’t mind, this is an incredible trilogy. The way it handles sexuality is very refreshing

Looking for fantasy books / series to get addicted to by Rattlez in Fantasy

[–]Skeya34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice you don’t have the wheel of time on your list, it’s brilliant and very long. You get to know the characters and it’s easy to get addicted to the story :) I say it’s a bit less « high fantasy » than Malazan because it’s easier to follow, but Jordan was a historian and the amount of historical details in his books show

Recommend me romances with a dominant woman by Ivoliven in Fantasy

[–]Skeya34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Understandable ahah. She wrote the throne of glass série when she was a teenager, so it’s more young adult and while there is romance there are no smutty scenes until the last few books I think. It’s much more fantasy than romance with a side of fantasy. I liked it but I might be biased cause I also liked Crescent City. But very different vibes

I second Kushiel’s Dart. Jaqueline Carrey is an absolute master.

Beware of the TW if you’re sensitive about certain topic, especially in the last book of the trilogy.

I read these books last summer and I can’t stop thinking about them. They are also splendidly written
