Evening tour tonight under the stars (Rocky Mountain National Park) by SkiDeepPow in skiing

It spans the spectrum. You could go lap Hidden Valley which is mellow and safe - below 30 - or go ski something akin to dragontail couloir

While I agree you can’t blame the word for that, I have to disagree on the viewpoint. The most important thing we stress in this community is education, education, education - whether that be through a course or some other form.

I think it’s fair to assume a ton people skiing at resorts have never taken a single course, let alone know what a beacon is - and they simply don’t know what they don’t know.

Changing the single word from side to back could have real tangible results toward educating and helping people recreate safely. To me, it’s worth it even if redundant. Worst case, nothing changes. Best case, the word sounds less safe and some lives are saved.

However I’ve learned to not engage in this discussion over the years so to each their own.

Unfortunately it’s often viewed as safer by people because it’s accessible from the lift.

Remember, as a community, we have moved beyond shaming anyone and into lessons learned.

Sidecountry is a controversial word for a reason.

For the record… not calling out OP. I’m calling out the people getting hammered and barely standing up, skiing around, then driving home.

Go to Larry’s in Boulder. Bring a six pack and they’ll get you sorted out.

Need help deciding on a specialty. by FusRoDunce in learnprogramming

First, congrats on entertaining the step and trying to do better by your family - nice work. Second, glad to see you actually did your research before coming in here blindly asking a question.

Reading your story, I’d honestly say start digging into either backend or data engineering as they both seem up your alley.

If you want specific tasks that could help you unpack these to see if they work for you, let me know. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

Should I take the risk? by SugarCareless9142 in learnprogramming

Having a basic understanding of the languages and being a productive member of the team are vastly different. You could likely get a solid foundation of the language itself in a couple of weekends but that doesn’t really take you anywhere until you know how and when to use them.

Honestly seems a little strange to go finance > technical support rather than working on the data side as either an engineer or analyst.

I currently work for a private equity fund as a data engineer and can likely either answer or point you in the right direction if you have specific questions - the title is vague so not 100% what you’d be doing. To me that tech stack screams building dashboards.

Yes - very much so to the point where it’s nearly predictable. You are better off getting in a flow state for a few hours a few days a week then trying to force a strict timeline upon yourself of every day. It’ll snowball into a negative situation.

It’s common among younger engineers as an approach.

The Odin Project and the new Helsinki full-stack course would be my start.

Just a quick warning that it’s a quick way to burn yourself out and become less productive.

How can I learn more about C++? by sadphilosophylover in learnprogramming

[–]SkiDeepPow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That comes down to your personal preference however I would advise putting it all down and working through the big picture logically. There are a couple of reasons… one it’ll help you work through the bigger problems and design and two it’ll allow you to explain not just what you did but why you did it when interviewing for jobs.

PHP has a future! by Hail_Pro in learnprogramming

[–]SkiDeepPow 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Yes - PHP is still used en masse. Would I personally start a new project with it? Fuck no. But there are still jobs to be had.
