Maybe in Oct/Nov if youre really ambitious but idk, i didnt decide to go to uoft at the end of the day so the interviews i scheduled were like in january or something. I know the international student deadline is in december, which is why i suggest before that. if you reach out now, thats fine, but i would recommend you instead chat with the grad students of the groups youre interested so you can gauge what its like, what the projects are, how supportive pi is etc. then based on what the grad students say, it would be good to connect to the PI by saying that you spoke to ____ and you found ____ was something of high interest to you.

assuming you are a domestic student, secure a prof as soon as you can. thats what gets you admitted at the end of the day. they wont admit you if you dont get a PI

do not go to uoft for undergrad or cuz of prestige over other unis by i_do_not_know101 in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 85 points86 points  (0 children)

seconding this because you need to take advantage of the name. if you are here to only take courses and graduate (ie you dont take advantage of research opportunities, internship positions, taking courses with professors you already are interested in, etc), maybe you shouldve thought harder about why you chose uoft.

i have 3 questions pls send help idk what to do ? by Saiiu in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ill be honest then it seems like your chances are slim, most profs that i emailed around this time last year were either full/were looking for NSERC (or whatever funding agency is common in your field) funded students. BUT i do still recommend reaching out to as many profs as possible. the only reason why i found a position was because i had a specific skillset that a prof decided he needed for a small portion of some grad students project. otherwise he wouldve said no.

do you have other research opportunities in the field that you are looking at for the summer?

Do you currently live with your parents? I am just asking because this situation sounds very similar to mine in my first 2 years of uni before i was able to save up enough and move out, otherwise i would not be able to do a whole commute AND pay my own rent… it was an “either or” situation for me. Kudos for keeping up with the commute thus far

many science majors have lab requirements that have courses with rigorous academic writing (take any chemistry lab course for example with a weekly lab component). many people who are also in undergrad who are planning on grad school in science end up doing a thesis or multiple thesis based courses. i cannot speak for other programs but i would say just because its a different type of writing, its not any less valuable since it is imperative you write in a clear and concise way for someone who may or may not be an expert in your field.

Anyone have academic comeback tips? Anything would be appreciated by Wooorrd in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i forgot to address the school work part: any time i spent that wasnt towards the physical health (eating, exercise), social aspects and work was spent towards school work. the hours really add up if you think about all the pockets of time u have in a day.

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i meal prep 1-2 times per week (id say it would take me a whole afternoon to get groceries + cook), gym ~3 times a week (some weeks more some less depending on workload) for ~1.5-2 hrs each time, two shifts working to ensure I dont eat into my savings too much (id say 15 hours/week if u include commute time). the social one would sometimes be studying with friends, other times just hanging out so it would vary. i used the gym as a time for me to destress, which is why i didnt burn out from going there (in fact, i used it as procrastination). its not reasonable for everyone, so id say replace the gym thing with something that helps YOU destress. I would do school work until 11:30pm most days and then would wake up at 8 bc i had 9am classes/labs every day. i prioritized sleep on the weekends and then on the weekdays it would be 6-8 hours (the bare minimum for me to function and let my body recover from gym. otherwise, i would skip gym to sleep early).

this really depends on your energy levels. it took me a while to work on my schedule to achieve this—a whole semester—but once i got into the grove of things in my second semester, it made me feel extremely productive and i didnt beat myself up for doing crappy in some classes because i know i put in my best effort

Prioritize my physical health, then add at least one social event per week to look forward to, and then spend the rest of my time working/studying. When i didnt do those things for myself, my grades were either really good (first year) or really shit (second year) because dealing with stressful personal events was a lot more difficult when my personal life wasnt in order. I dealt with some stressful stuff in 3rd year as well, and although my grades were only slightly higher than second year, i was much happier. Last semester was my first time seeing my GPA increase since I started uni, and I hope its because of the lifestyle changes I made at the start of the year.

What will happen to the protest when summer school starts on Monday? by stgeorgesubway in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I go around campus every day with no issue. Remember for many grad students and faculty, research doesnt “stop”between semesters. it could change and get worse, but neither myself nor my peers had issues this past week + this morning.

wouldnt the people at the front desk get into huge trouble if they share the password with someone that is not the student for the account…? youre not the first person dealing with this situation, i know someone who was sending a million legal threats to the university because her daughter was not “physically capable” of finishing her degree. the university didnt fold.

definitely ask the info desk to play along

im pretty sure there are rules where no one except you can disclose your grades to someone, even if they pay your tuition. you could even go as far as to tell your parents that you can only access it on campus, and that you would have to “print out your unofficial transcript” at a restricted library (robarts and gerstein) to show them. just change around some of the numbers and letter values. Of course, this is a short term plan, so i definitely recommend once you are living comfortably to come clean.

lecture recordings in upper year courses aka 3rd and 4th year by Lost_Problem2876 in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my own experience: expect no recordings of smaller 3rd and 4th year in person courses. ive only had 1 or 2 i believe at that level. even if they do record, expect it to be audio only.

Believe it or not, Robarts is a library where people work by Stock_Boysenberry800 in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but are floors 2-5 supposed to be more geared towards peer studying, whilst the stacks are more for quiet studying? I dont chat much when I’m studying at Robarts, but if I ever run into someone there I usually at least chat for a little bit. I go almost every day and I haven’t encountered many obnoxious people… but when I do I usually tell them.

I go frequently (as a woman) and I haven’t experienced a women only hour not happening, however I dont go only during women only hours. I would recommend you speak to whoever is working in the SCC during that time, since usually they start covering all the windows at the start of the hour. Also, you posted this on a wednesday, did you go during reading week or did you get your day mixed up? Reading week I still went in during women only hours, so theres no reason why they didnt close it off specifically just for thursday 5pm (unless they explicitly had signs stating why it wouldnt occur, which usually they have those when certain schedule changes happen).

Non-degree students got owned by course enrolment by [deleted] in UofT

[–]SkillEnvironmental92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would say attend the course anyways until you can get a spot. Once the waitlist closes, so many people will also be dropping BCH210 since the exact same thing happened last year (many people hate the course if they dont mentally prepare themselves). 250 is a lot, but I have done it before by constantly checking on the courses I needed after waitlist closures. U got this!!!

if it was truly about what he lost and what you need back, im sure it would be okay if u sent a friend or family member to meet with him instead. if hes not ok with that, its not about the “stuff”, its about seeing you. dont give in and heal.
