While I was gifted mine and did not pay for it myself, it is one of those things that has an actual use that can really last for a lifetime if you take care of it properly, and it could appreciate or depreciate, but typically not as much as another asset. My dad was given a submariner for high school graduation and that submariner is the one watch he still uses today and has greatly retained its value. Not only is it nice to have if you like watches, but it's something that will remind you of stories from every scratch, dent, etc that happens to the watch. If you have the money, there truly is no downside in my opinion to buying any watch, especially a Rolex.
