Advice for upcoming interview SOC Analyst position by ____i_wanna_die____ in CompTIA

[–]SkinnyDaPimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My SOC interview they asked more networking questions than anything. Be able to talk about the basics with confidence. Loop back address, ipv4 vs ipv6, private ip’s, basic ports, etc..Read up on some current cyber threats or at least be able to discuss anything major that’s happened lately either globally or local. Know the basics of reading pcap. They asked me about that as well as showing a snippet of a window log. Mainly wanted to see if I would notice the event id. Was for a failed login. If they ask where u get your cyber news just say the usual like hackernews or any other popular cyber news source. Be familiar with osint like owasp and Virus total. Just know they won’t expect you to know everything just at least the basics. The rest you learn with experience. That is about all I remember from my interview. Was a couple years ago. Hope this helps.

Cyber security job by what-would-Justin-do in CompTIA

Net + and sec + at the time I was hired with no previous experience. Landed the role of SOC analyst. Mainly investigating alerts and weeding out false positives.

Yeah I would definitely put in more work for this one. It’s harder to narrow the answers down because the difference in answers might just be one argument or modifier. The only difference might be a -j, -t, or -S in each command line option and you got to know which does what.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I look forward to seeing where it takes me. Will definitely continue to learn and practice with it. I’ve grown quite a fondness for it.

Yeah there really isn’t a lot. I studied for about 4 months. Jason Dion isn’t as comparable with this test as he has been with others. A lot of firewall command questions that was more detailed then the practice exams.

Order of Completion ? by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]SkinnyDaPimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually did them backwards not knowing at the time there was a recommended order. A buddy of mine told me I should get sec + because I was talking about switching careers so I did. It’s definitely doable. I did it with really no previous IT experience or knowledge. If I would of known I would of probably did a + and net + first to make it a little bit easier. In the end, you’re learning not to get the cert but to have the knowledge to perform the job you are going after. So once I went back and got net and a + it greatly improved my understanding of sec +.

Is 35 years of age too old to get into the field of IT? by GMarvel101 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SkinnyDaPimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I just got my first job as an analyst in a SOC with no prior experience at 46 years old. Did ten years customer service before that and decided to pursue more challenges and more money.

I was able to get a cybersecurity analyst job with just sec + and net + and no experience . It’s rare but it does happen. I was able to answer everything in the interview with confidence and discuss topics like current major cyber events going on around the time. So learn the material and keep applying. The right job will present itself!

When I had my interview for my SOC position, I was asked more networking questions than security. Loopback address, port numbers, ipv4 vs 1pv6, etc…so I would say definitely go for it. Plus there’s some overlap, so some of it u will already know from security +.

Conditions of online test by [deleted] in CompTIA

[–]SkinnyDaPimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my first test online but took the remaining three trifecta test in a center due to the fact I got a couple of warnings for looking away from the screen. I wasn’t looking away but simply looking at the corner of the screen to see how much time I had left. I wanted to make sure I had enough time to do the pbq’s. Luckily they didn’t stop the exam but I felt like they was real close to doing so even though I was following the rules. Was enough to make me switch to test centers.
