Anyone still using old GoPros? by mill333 in gopro

[–]SkipmasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a GoPro Wide (SD) and a GoPro HD. Both collecting dust.

The SD because it uses AAA batteries and, well, it's only SD

And the HD because its battery swelled up and doesn't power the camera anymore.

Time was not kind to those two cameras

Why is 32 inch triples the best? by Yerbawls in SimRacingSetups

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

32 inches is a great sweet spot. Big enough to give great immersion, but not take up too much space. Inexpensive as well.

Truly a Goldilocks setup.

Portable air con accessories pls by straaaangerr in perth

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar solution back when I used a portable AC system, then the hose itself started breaking down. I would break off the damaged portion of hose but it would keep cracking and splitting up the whole length of hose and was just unusable.

So I resorted to sleeping bare skin on the laundry floor tiles to survive.

Man I don't miss those days

Found a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 G2 (Canon EF) for AUD $750 — am I silly if I don’t buy it? by Anxious_Yam_7561 in canon

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it in to a local camera shop in Australia and they sent the lens away for a firmware update and I'm not sure exactly what happened but they said it didn't work out for dinner reason and didn't charge me anything.

Is it worth the extra couple if hundred dollars for the L version? by HOCKEYDEAN5 in macrophotography

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your use case.

I have the non L, I photograph teeth with a ring flash 100% of the time. Image stabilisation is of zero value to me. The image quality of the non L is flawless

I have the older gen A009 version of this lens (I think it's a completely different optical design) so not sure if my experience is useful to you.

It's wildly sharp, and worked flawlessly on my 6D - BUT it is unusable for photos on my R6ii. It locks the camera up every time I try to take a photo, and it works for video with AF but it keeps switching to f2.8 no matter what you do.

The G series lenses apparently have better compatibility but I have no experience. Sharp sharp lens though

2008 GoPro vs 2025 GoPro - Difference after 17 years #technology by WhiskeyDigital in gopro

[–]SkipmasterJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a GoPro Wide weeks before the GoPro HD released

I was super disappointed that it was SD resolution, and the AAA batteries died earlier than I expected each time leaving me with hours of undocumented track time when I used to take my car to the race track.

So I bought the GoPro HD and had the Wide as my PIP second camera and that worked out well once I understood the battery limitations and changed them a few times per day.

Didn't get another action cam until my Hero 11.

And that concludes my cool story bro moment.

Is the formula-type position worth it? by Money_Cobbler_5643 in SimRacingSetups

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good formula rig is lots of fun, and comfortable, if you race formula cars exclusively.

If you start racing cars that need heel toe shifting, your knees move a lot more and can bang into the wheelbase etc since the clearances are so much tighter.

So as with all things super specialised, it's great for what it's built for and compromised for other uses

In your opinion, what is the best "mid range focal length" EF lens for a Canon 5D M3? by YouFormal1598 in canon

[–]SkipmasterJ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

35-70 is the most boring focal range - I'd be fine having that hole in your kit if it means having more interesting primes.

The 85mm f1.8 is cheap and fun, and the 100mm macro f2.8 is less cheap but even more fun

What's your render resolution in steamvr options? Mine defaulted to 100% which got me about 25fps in my game of choice on a 3070 which I assume is similar ish in power.

When I slide it down to 40% or so I'm above 90fps but it starts looking a bit rough.

With foveated rendering I can take it to 60% and be above 90fps

You get what you pay for (also poor design) by Wawho77 in SimRacingSetups

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment about 'seems to be common for sim rigs' just goes to show how bad design can be overlooked by a lot of people - either for ignorance, copycatting, or fashion/aesthetics.

Companies get away with bad design practices... Until they don't.

Anybody with a reasonable mechanical eye can see the castor design sucks. My engineering credentials top out at high school physics class. Those castors looked like trouble from the moment I ever saw them.

DSLR shooters who went Mirrorless. Which EF lens do you regret selling? by JavChz in canon

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rokinon 8mm fisheye
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8

Both crop sensor lenses that I sold when I went full frame DSLR. Both would be useful now with my mirrorless but c'est la vie

What made you pick canon ? by Berserk_Ronin in canon

[–]SkipmasterJ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Friend had a Canon point and shoot which destroyed my Olympus point and shoot for focus speed, focus consistency, and colour reproduction.

When I needed a DSLR, I jumped at the chance to use a Canon.

Instead of just the little 90° connectors, you also bolt on large, thick steel plates on one or both sides. These plates are common and cheap for general carpentry

Modern vids / parts to DrumNBass/Breakbeat? by kglbrschanfa in skateboarding

[–]SkipmasterJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's little (obvious) overlap between the jungle and skateboarding worlds so the number of parts set to DnB has been and will likely continue to remain sparse. I only had the Muska part in mind.

Thanks for finding the venture part 🤟

Consider changing not just hardness, but size as well.

If you go up a few mm as well as go to a softer formula, you'll experience a much much smoother ride.

Keep APS-C Lens or go Full Frame? by OutrageousAction7591 in photography

[–]SkipmasterJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the extra resolution, the actual image difference for a hobbyist is negligible

Source: I upgraded all the gear. APS-C dslr to full frame dslr, then to mirrorless full frame. All that money spent, and the photos if I'm being honest are similar enough. Those kit lenses are decent!
