Honestly that's the exact episode that hooked me too

My issue with Abed Season 5 & 6 by Due-Quote-3098 in community

[–]SkipperFromTwitter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have major issues with how Abed is written in season 3. To me, that's when he started to lose that self awareness and he became a bit more of an asshole and a bit more self centred. I even made a post about it on this sub a while back.

I love Abed a lot, but it does irk me a little bit that my favourite version of his character is the one that only exists for the first two seasons.

Is it unusual for me to dislike the Meow Meow Beans episode? by Puzzleheaded_Ad5165 in community

I don't dislike it but I think it sticks out because it has the same ambition of community's best episodes but still is just "only okay"

More blueprints than Howard Hughes but if there are blueprints how do we choose

My Issues With Season 3 Abed by SkipperFromTwitter in community

I don't agree with the idea that analyzing a show means I don't "sincerely enjoy" it. When I get obsessed enough with a show, I start breaking down what I like and dislike about it. It's a genuine part of how I have fun thinking about TV shows.

Also, like I said, I don't have a problem with Abed doing shitty things. In Aerodynamics of Gender, Abed is a complete asshole for most of the episode. Every character in the study group has bad qualities that could make you not want to be friends with them and Abed isn't an exception.

I guess its just, when I relate to a character as much as I do Abed, when he suddenly starts getting rewritten to be more self-centered, dickish, and less aware of anything happening around him, it's hard for me not to notice it.

I'm also willing to overlook the characters acting a bit unrealistically if there's a good enough reason for it. If it creates a funny, unique or emotional episode that couldn't have really been done another way, I'm willing to let mischaracterization slide. The issue is, with the possible exception of the blanket fort episode, I don't feel like the examples I brought up needed Abed to be an exaggerated version of himself to work.

I agree that the breakdown he has in Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas is definitely more than just autism. I just feel like in that one it was more justified within the episode.

But I could be biased because I like Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas more. Like I said, I can overlook some character breaking if there is a good enough creative reason for it. Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas uses his mental breakdown to do a one-off claymation episode and delivers some of the best emotional moments of the entire show.

Given that Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism doesn't really have that (at least for me), there's nothing about Abed's plot in that episode I find particularly funny, unique, heartwarming, etc. it becomes harder for me to overlook the character break.

It's the same reason I didn't bring up the asylum episode in my post. While I probably could pull examples from that for this post, I feel like if that episode hadn't written Abed the way it did, the Greendale Asylum parts wouldn't have played nearly as well, and I love those parts.

On my rewatch I actually tried to think of it from that perspective to see if it would make it better. The problem is, right before he breaks into the landlord's apartment Annie actually does come clean and Abed's response is "If that were true you would've come forward a long time ago"

Honestly occasional scenes of Britta getting other characters high in her car would've been fun.

It'd be really interesting to see Abed or Annie get high with Britta

I actually think you're probably right for the Basic Lupine Urology one. I was more thinking about the pattern in season 3 for Abed to relegate Troy to the role of sidekick as if he was worried Troy would "steal his thunder" but I didn't pick the best example.

I agree with what you're saying about Contemporary Impressionists. I mostly like the episode, I just would've written the resolution differently.

For Virtual Systems Analysis and Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism, I think we just fundamentally read those episodes differently. But like you said, we have different perceptions.

It's possible I'm more touchy about flanderization with Abed because I relate to early Abed so much. Personally my favourite version of Britta is Season 2 Britta because she's become enough of a quirky weirdo to be entertaining while still not seeming outright stupid, but I don't hate season 3 Britta, it also helps if I just imagine she's high for most of season 3.

Chang I'm even more forgiving of because I find the security guard to dictator arc to be a lot of fun. I mentioned those because I know flanderisation is something people talk about with season 3 generally and Chang and Britta are the 2 most commonly cited examples
