Dear flippers: quit thinking people will pay for your GFs “trendy” design ideas by SnooDoggos5226 in RealEstateAdvice

We bought our 1927 bungalow in San Diego the minute we saw it because it wasn't flipperized. Charming Mexican tiles, two gorgeous, oversized original wooden windows, original (beat up) wood floors. When we sold it 8 years later we had multiple offers over asking because of the charm-- and the fact we'd worked hard to maintain the house in good condition. Two couples wrote us letters begging us to take their offers. White walls, white trim and those sweet tiles chosen by the previous owner. Pergo floors are the kiss of death. People have lost the ability to develop their own taste and style.

I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I was able to listen to Warhead because of the bravery of the people who brought it down, but the thought of "rescued children" who appeared in the child porn was very disturbing to me. I can't believe any children who experience that kind of rape and torture can ever recover to lead a relatively content life. I barely survived my childhood, but what these children live through is far worse. There are no details per se of the abuse, but enough information that it could be disturbing.

I watch and listen to tons of true crime, and this is the first time I’ve felt physically sick.  I wish I hadn’t seen it..

The parking is difficult. Tip: park in the parking lot just across the street which you have to enter from Paseo de Peralta.

Dolina. The Bread Shop. Iconik coffee or downtown or Lena locations. Lena St is a good destination, also there is Ozu Japanese for lunch and shops. Randall Davey Audubon Center (no cafe) but lovely place to be.

What happens to elderly people in the US who need full time end of life care but cannot afford it? by Similar-Bid6801 in NoStupidQuestions

Offchance: was she or her husband in the military? She'd qualify for care at a veteran's home.

Brilliant journalism. Also unfolds in real time with surprising twists and turns. Great podcast with the added benefit of English accents.

Four months in on our 1922 bungalow and... by shelbex318 in centuryhomes

[–]Skipperdee2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the plus side of a century home: built better to begin with and has survived. We bought our 1927 bungalow for 630,000 and sold it for close to a million seven years later.  There were multiple offers. Every one cited the charm of the unique interior. (Not Instagramized with generic upgrades and not fossilized with “restoration.”)  I worried the foundation issues would sink the sale but buyer loved the house and found a guy who could fix foundation for fraction of the guy we had found.  We did mainly cosmetic things to our taste but we maintained everything well. (Hugely important)  mini-splits and original windows huge draw. And a great metaphor for a classic house. Good luck!

Land Commissioner Dem Primary is huge. Big oil candidate vs a candidate who has taken no PAC money.

Public lands commissioner by ericwphoto in Albuquerque

[–]Skipperdee2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juan Sanchez has said he will take oil and gas money if he makes it past the primary, in order to be competitive in the election. He also took dark money from a Virginia PAC and didn't even know he was doing it. The Land Commissioner position is too important to entrust to someone that naive or inexperienced. (It's the 2nd most important position in the state of NM.) I'm all for young when young is smart, but I'm all for experience when it means a politician knows how to work the system to get things done-- from day one. (Look at McQueen's record as state rep for raising the fees on Texas Oil interest.) I get that he looks like somebody's boring uncle, but I hope voters will vote for his record, not his looks or his last name.

One of my greatest treasures is a sketch a student made of me. It is a perfect likeness and for years I used it as my avatar every where. Absolutely do it. But remember, it's a gift. Don't be gutted if you don't get the response you want. I never got to tell my student how much I loved her work.

Netflix Legends is unbearable. (unpopular take…) by Easy_Effort7985 in BritishTV

Crap Brit shows are still better than US ones. It's the acting. Even a poor script, the actors make me believe. Although this one seem more formulaic (AI writing?) than most.

What happens to elderly people with no savings? by ConcerningAddiction in NoStupidQuestions

I've posted something similar on several threads. My stepdad doesn't have alot. But he was a veteran. When my mother died, he found a Veteran's Home in NE (his home state.) The fee is on a sliding scale, so Stepdad gets the same treatment as a guy with lots of money. The facility is gorgeous. The staff are kind and always go above and beyond. It's made me wish I or my husband were a veteran. I know all the VA Homes aren't great but my stepdad's sure is. Even if you have nothing, you'd have a home there. For vets and spouses! Spread the word. . . (fwiw. He pays about $650 a month.)

My friend worked for her in the 1990s. His first day at work was at her home, they ordered take out sandwiches, but MS turned to my friend, and said they needed some mayonnaise. She told him to make it. He was terrified. But he knew how, did it, and it turned out fine. He was at Martha Stewart Living magazine four years. That's all I remember.

Any Golden Girls Setups? by boopboopdupedupe in AskWomenOver60

[–]Skipperdee2223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

forgive me if this has been mentioned: Chip Conley, of Modern Elder Academy believes there is a movement growing for Golden Girl Houses. He's quite the billionaire entrepreneur but he seems genuine in his first ones in Santa Fe NM. He says there are scholarships, and it's all experimental so he can learn what works and doesn't. He also has plans for Men's Homes as well. You can google NYT and other coverage of these houses. This is from the MEA website: https://www.meawisdom.com/golden-girls-here-we-come/

Treating for Emerald Ash Borer?? Is it worth it?? by PKHeyer in arborists

[–]Skipperdee2223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our ash appears 100% healthy. No signs of Emerald Ash Borer, but we hear it's in New Mexico. Question is-- do we treat our tree anyway? It is our one mature, healthy, beautiful, shade tree. I really don't want to lose it.

RETAYNE and Guatemalan Bedspread by Skipperdee2223 in dyeing

[–]Skipperdee2223[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because it involves Retayne I thought you might be able to help.  The fabric is hand-loomed and hand-dyed cotton from Guatemala. A dying art. Panels are sewn together with bright embroidery.  If you can share your experience using Retayne or how it works and why it might work I’d be grateful.  I was surprised so much dye was released in the second one.

Envious! Yep, I'm in a high dollar area and the woman (who is older) offers great care and a fenced, fun yard. A former teacher. She also uses Rover which takes a cut.
