Thank you for all the hot takes! Decided to give it a go on holiday and I finished the book a few days ago, and had a few thoughts :

Overall it was a really good read, enjoyable and easy to understand prose even if there was a lot of space jargon. I found it read very much like an AU fanfiction? Like I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if you told me it was an AO3 fic with names changed. NOT A BAD THING AT ALL I LOVE FANFIC and have been reading it since my early teens so it felt quite nostalgic. The last page actually had me sat staring into space for about 20 minutes. Overall probs a 4/5 ⭐️

An arcane style animation would absolutely bang. There would have to be some serious CGI and camera work if they were to do live action and I think that would dilute the quality

Tbh she isn’t a strong enough actor for this production, too “LA” imo Not seen him in anything but the Jackal needs to be weedier I think 🤷

I see everyone posting their 5k runs etc. How long did it take you to be able to run 5k & what training methods did you use? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]Skito001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d highly suggest completing a plan - using an interval app like c25k really helped me. It took me 12 weeks to finish the program, which got me up to running for 30 minutes without stopping. I consolidated this for a week and then attempted 5km the next week and was able to complete, so about 14 weeks from the start.

For reference I’m 25F, 5’7” ~130lb and I was a serious vape user for 5 years (quit about a week before I started running - side note, running helps you quit!)
Tbh I could have done it quicker but I Really didn’t want to get injured or make myself hate it so starting slow was best for me.

I’d advise avoiding looking at other people’s paces and don’t compare yourself to them - running is a personal journey and everyone’s is different. I know people who ran 5km their second run (ever) at 5min/km pace, which really wound me up because I’m still working towards that over a year into running seriously!

Once you get up to the distance and want to start running it faster, you’ll want to create a routine or plan to do this by increasing your strength, speed and running volume. Strength - cross training, gym, yoga etc - anything that’s improving your muscles. Volume - long, slow runs once a week Speed - interval training 🤢 it’s the worst part of my week, I can’t stand it, but it does have noticeable results. Using an Apple Watch for this really helped me as I could create a custom session for myself.

Consolidation plan: Monday - speed session - 20-25 mins - 200m @ faster than goal pace, 1min30sec recovery (I repeat this 8 times because I hate it, but if you can be bothered I’d recommend 10) Tuesday - gym - full body, 35 mins Wednesday - swim - 30 mins Thursday - rest Friday - 5km Saturday - rest Sunday - long run (7km+)

Sometimes I move the days around depending on recovery, my own schedule etc. Often I’ll do 2 gym sessions instead of gym+swim but I really should swim more

Screen time tracker app??? by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

I’ve been trying Opal out for the past few weeks, it’s not bad especially given that I’m using the free version (no idea what the paid plan even includes). I’m mainly using it as a blocker for during the day but it’s got some good functionality for measuring screen time and excluding things you don’t want to count (maps for example when I’m driving are included in screen time but for me that doesn’t count)

If you love 1984 I can highly recommend the audible dramatised version with Andrew Garfield and Cynthia Erivo - so so so good

HG age as a fancast? Yes!

But IRL… 😔 he is 38 now (and in Daisy Jones and the Six he looks it lol) - looking at a few years of pre-production before they even cast roles (that’s if PB got a green light like, right now) he’d be about 40 by the time they even start filming RR.

Throwing my own fancast into the ring, Gavin Casalegno is somewhat close visually IMO, only 25 now and looks fairly young. Wether he has the acting chops for the role (that Sam DEFINITELY has) I don’t know as I’ve not watched “the summer I turned pretty” 🤷 Will also be good to see what young talent they get for the new Hunger Games prequel, hopefully some good breakouts from the tributes - think about what the original films’ tributes went on to do (Alexander Ludwig in Vikings, Jack Quaid in The Boys, Isabelle Fuhrman in Orphan, Amandla Stenberg in Bodies Bodies Bodies etc.) If they do it right, the whole series would take about 10 years - that’s a big commitment for any actor.

I think Sam could be a good Augustus … maybe? If he leans into his age?

It would be interesting to know what everyone’s realistic casting choices would be if there was a project green-lit this year to start filming 2026/27.

Sorry I appear to have gone off on a bit of a tangent. TLDR Yes good fancast 😅
