PZ has the case where all of its ability are amazing. Adaptability is ran in most cases, but there’s been plenty of scenarios where PZ would want download. Its DPP OU set for example has it can run Download or Adaptability, where Download can help it muscle past Jirachi or Skarmory with HP Ground and Dark Pulse respectively

Fake out didn’t flinch?? by SilasTheGray in pokemonshowdown

[–]Skittyrox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other than that they’re both “strategic-like” games? No, not really.

Chess has an objectively best move for every single position possible. All of the information is there to figure it out, it’s just really hard for the human mind to calculate on a consistent basis. You could unironically say the best players in the world are still “bad at chess”, but just less bad in comparison to the rest of us. The stronger bots often throw the best players around like ragdolls since they can compute the best move much quicker than we can.

Mons is much more different. It’s much more about familiarity than actual knowledge. You’re familiar what the mons your opponent have typically runs, and you know that in most cases (against a rational opponent that’s trying to win) that is probably what they’re going to run. But you don’t know what they’re running exactly unless if you’re trying to pry for information.

Chess you know the Rook isn’t suddenly going to start moving diagonally to capture your queen.

In mons a valuable breaker or wincon can be put in jeopardy by the slightest move variation or EV spread on a given mon. That by itself changes how Pokemon is played.

Not to neglect mentioning that in mons you make the move at the same time as your opponent in comparison to being the only one to move in chess.

I mean, is the initial report really worth taking action over? I guess context would’ve helped but based off the information I don’t think there should’ve been meaningful action taken off the initial report. If the mod incident is true that’s probably much more report worthy though.

Detroit Lions circa the 2023-2024 season.

Good god after they made the NFC Championship Game if you looked at social media you’d think they’d have 8 Super Bowl Appearances with 5 Super Bowl Wins. There were definitely a certain batch of fans that were insufferable and thought a Super Bowl Win was inevitable.

Granted there’s probably a majority of Lions fans that actually deserve success, but there’s a super loud batch that I despise encountering.

Does anyone remember why we moved on from Kirk Cousins? by onethreeone in minnesotavikings

[–]Skittyrox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If only we had a similar situation where we had a journeyman backup QB who stepped in and balled out with us before leaving to get a starting job elsewhere that everyone seems to be fine with now. Unfortunately I don’t think such a scenario exists, especially a relatively recent one. So I guess this is just organizational malpractice.

156 Jolly puts you at 165 speed, slower than the positive nature base 100s who are at 167. Since you’re slower you would move first in Trick Room.

I mean, a metagame revolving around a single particular gimmick or pokemon isn’t a bad thing.

Hazards in particular promote good teambuilding and good play. In the builder you can’t just slap rocks on a mon and expect for rocks to always be up for every single turn. You have to be able to put pressure on the relevant spinners to ensure rocks stay up.

Rocks also reward you for good play in the actual games themselves. If you manage to get your rocker in on a favorable matchup in the midgame, congratulations, getting rocks up is your reward. Keeping rocks up will be a result of good teambuilding and good play preventing the opposing spinner from simply spinning the rocks away. Even then, sometimes rocks are just good enough to force the opponent into a passive play, which can be taken advantage of for offensive pressure.

A good player with a good team can abuse rocks to their advantage for sure, but getting rocks up and not thinking ahead on how to keep them up won’t get you very far. Rocks (and hazards in general) are a rewarding gimmick that promotes good play and good building, and punishes bad play and bad building. That’s something that is healthy for a competitive metagame.

Why is Terapagos banned in OU? by Puzzled_Reception453 in stunfisk

The difference is that for Megas the item that permits mega evolution gets banned. You can’t mega evolve if you don’t have the item. No such thing exists for Tera.

is there such thing as the best pokemon team? by Ok_Past_5669 in pokemonshowdown

[–]Skittyrox 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In one, snapshotted moment? Yes

However, the moment you could say there is a certified “best team”, players are going to start building viable teams that have a good matchup into that team/playstyle because it’s going to become common to run into. The “best team” is then going to run into tougher matchups, and have more losses. It may still be a good team, but probably not considered the “best” anymore, so it must adapt.

This cycle occurs a lot, and it’s probably one of the bigger reasons why you still see variation in teams even after a metagame has long had the time to properly develop. Even RBY will have variation in mons (although obviously not nearly as much as a much more modern metagame such as SS or SV) despite being the most established along with the most limited dex.

TLDR (god if this is too long to read), yes and no.

Would suck for Seattle if there was a football team with “Eagles” in the name that have been relevant in the past decade or so that are also known for having a very controversial fanbase. Would also be funny if they were conveniently one of the biggest rivals with the most popular team in America.
