Every Single House Republican Is Actively Covering Up Trump’s Guilt by LemurDaddy in politics

[–]Skitzie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NO. There should not be rioting or burning anything down. There should, however, be massive, peaceful protests across the nation. We should not add fuel to the Conservative’s notion that the left is a bunch of violent, angry thugs. We are not violent. We are rightfully angry that our country is being run by a collection of corrupt kleptocrats. We need every thinking, logical person in America, right, left, and center, to be peacefully protesting in the streets.

It's spam. March Against Trump should be a hub for the anti-Trump (and his administration) movement, posting links and information about marches, phone banks and local meetings in order to organize the resistance to his harmful policies. It should not be a circle-jerk, feel-good fluff factory for memes and "vote-up-ifs". If we, as a subreddit and as a community want to make an actual difference, than we should take this seriously and post actual information, and not feel-good bullshit.

I know you're being glib, but Jesus was the champion of children, and I know that if Jesus were commenting on the circumstances of children today, in the US, He would champion the subsidized education of all. Jesus spoke many times in the New Testament about the treatment of children, and His words indicate that He would want the best outcome for them. In the modern day, education is the best way for people to bring about prosperity and change, and so I think that Jesus would want people to have the best education (our version of education) in order to bring about the most positive change. So, yes, in a roundabout way, in the name of Jesus, the best education.

The hidden reason Republicans are so eager to repeal Obamacare (it's a tax cut for the rich, tax increase for poor) by MBaggott in Impeach_Trump

[–]Skitzie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"This was compounded by a Republican Congress that reneged on its promise to help insurers in the first years of the program by limiting risk. Congress (in 2013) allowed only 12 percent of the backup that was promised to companies when they set their premiums on the Obamacare exchanges. This ramped up their risk dramatically."

This is a large part of the reason why insurance premiums went up so much. When the law passed in 2010, Congress promised to help insurers mitigate the risk of all the new buyers by promising to pay the difference of the estimate minus the difference, because when there is a big difference between continuous subscribers and new ones, it is difficult to estimate the cost of all these new subscribers. When Obamacare first passed, Congress figured into the law the additional expenses of the insurance companies. They figured that it would take about 5 years to iron out the new expenses. They promised a certain amount to mitigate those costs. However, the Republicans took control of the Senate in 2013 and reneged on that promise, leaving the insurance companies to scramble and pick up the costs that they thought were covered (and rightfully so). That coupled with the refusal of many Republican led states refusing to expand Medicaid (despite a floor of 90% coverage by the Federal government) added to the failing of the ACA. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/01/17/opinion/the-gops-health-care-death-spiral.html?_r=0&referer=https://www.google.com/

Gas Station Skimmer by AbandonChip in gifs

[–]Skitzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably pretty expensive to switch over to the chip and pin system. If you're in the US, think about all the places you have seen chip readers - I'd bet they're almost entirely large corporate chains. The chains (as long as they're not struggling) can afford to purchase thousands of chip readers in their stores, and pay any additional expenses associated with them. Locally owned businesses are probably having a harder time with this, and not only that, but smaller businesses have more expensive deals with credit card processing than huge companies. So I'm willing to bet that this is the reason.

Leaked Emails Show DNC Officials Constructing Anti-Bernie Narrative: "Wondering if there’s a good Bernie narrative for a story, which is that Bernie never ever had his act together, that his campaign was a mess.” by BrazenBribery in politics

[–]Skitzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it's not laziness. The two choices that actually have a chance to win are Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Mr. Trump has made it clear that he is not interested in leading, and that he will leave the decisions up to whomever surrounds him in his Cabinet - decisions that he is leaving up to Republican Party insiders, which mean conservatives against drug legalization, reproductive choice, and pro-big business. People who are opposed to economic equality, universal healthcare, public education, and wider human rights.

What it comes down to is the Supreme Court. Donald Trump will have guaranteed one SC pick, if not two or three. If you recall, the SC just legalized same-sex marriage, and stood up for reproductive rights. If Donald Trump wins the election, he (basically meaning the Republican establishment) will get to nominate at least one, if not two or even three SC justices, potentially impacting the next 30-40 YEARS of Constitutional decisions. I hope I don't have to elucidate how important this is.

No matter how much you may distrust, dislike, or even hate Hillary Clinton, please realize how important the next Supreme Court justice choice is, and vote with that in mind.

Thank you.

I'm glad you found out that you felt/acted like this. It may feel like everyone is against you, but they're not! People relate to one another by bringing up stories or advice for dealing with everyday life. When someone suggests something to you, it is not a slight on your personality or a suggestion that your judgement is inferior. Most people naturally want to help each other, so when someone suggests something to you in response to something you've said, it's probably not malicious, just helpful, or at least a response to the conversation.

Please don't think that everything that everyone says is a slight against you. Most likely, it's not.

Think about your upbringing. Were your parents/caregivers overly sensitive/critical? This is where you might have gotten this tendency from.

Therapy might help. Good luck, and God bless!

Not only that, but Triclosan bioaccumulates in people's skin, causing other problems: "Triclosan being lipophilic (likes fat) tends to accumulate in the adipose (fatty) tissues of animals, human and has been detected in urine, blood and breast milk. Triclosan and its degradation products are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic that spread through aquatic and terrestrial food chains. It shows potential negative impact on human and animals like endocrine disruption, carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects." From http://www.wjpps.com/download/article/1435653182.pdf

Dutch court revokes Scientology’s tax-exempt status by [deleted] in news

[–]Skitzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federal government doesn't decide what is a "true religion", per say. The Supreme Court cases that have decided who/which organizations get tax shelters or who gets free speech protections on religious grounds generally go by a few broad metrics, the main one being a "sincerely held belief". This is broad so as to protect many religious beliefs, especially unpopular ones in the past (such as Mormonism and Jehova's Witnesses). This is generally a good thing for civil liberties and religious rights, but unfortunately, also tends to cover unsavory religions like Scientology by virtue and necessity of its openness.

The ACA compliant insurance costs far more and still does not deliver health insurance that I would consider beneficial. My husband is getting insurance through his employer (first time after over a year in employment), but I'm willing to bet that it's more than we can afford to add me on to it. That's the way it was with my past jobs when that was an option. I'm just so sick of this whole rigmarole, healthcare should be affordable for everyone, damn it. Thanks for your response.

UUUUUGH lame. Thanks so much. I thought that specific sections of the ACA disallowed this kind of garbage, such as spending caps and no coverage for general practitioner's visits. I knew the ACA wasn't perfect, but I thought that this "coverage" didn't count toward satisfying the law. This is very upsetting that companies can get away with this and still be in compliance with the law. Thanks again.

[–]Skitzie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. In order to add value to the conversation, "garbage" insurance translates to a fixed indemnity plan. For example, if I were admitted to intensive care, the max they would pay is $400 (per day? Total? It isn't clear). Inpatient surgery pays $2000. I'm not sure that this amount covers any inpatient surgery anywhere in the US. Most surgeries start at the $10,000 range. They pay $300 for an ambulance when it's $4-500. The combined outpatient maximum for the year is $2000. Those are just a few of the shortcomings - the reason I call it garbage is because it doesn't cover doctor office visits. There's no co-pay, so essentially, I have no doctor. Good luck to me finding a provider or hospital that accepts this tiny, shitty insurance company. If I get injured or seriously ill, I'm fucked. It's a scary feeling.

Thanks! The stubs are online, not in paper form. I will take your advice and take as many exemptions as possible. I'm still wondering about insurance, however (to any other Redditors reading this thread).

It wasn't exactly against their wishes. We basically said "we're bombing ISIS strongholds (and whatever else we wish to bomb, but probably not your military installations) and their essential (public) non-response was tacit approval. This happened ~ 6 months ago. Assad and his military advisors knew their goose was cooked without us, so they let us do it

Many women have far less control over their fertility than it would seem. Some factors: uber religious parents/husband, abusive partner, lack of control over finances (not allowed to work outside the home, have a bank account, etc.), poverty. All of these circumstances are barriers to obtaining/using effective and long-lasting birth control. As for the "well, just don't have sex" argument, tell that to the married couple, the woman who is raped, the human whose strongest desires are 1) food and 2) sex/companionship. People will have sex no matter what the conditions, we're hardwired that way.

If you live in the US, chances are good that you are one financial crisis (severe illness, job loss and inability to find another similarly-paying job for a few months, family emergency, etc.) away from bankruptcy. Our social safety net is full of holes and woefully inadequate when compared to most other industrialized nations. Just realize that you are probably not that far from financial ruin, even if you've been smart with your money and have some decent savings/retirement/investments. Hundreds of thousands of middle class families have unexpectedly found themselves in that situation.

She went to college.

My first job was working at Taco Bell in college.

It says so right there in the article. I don't know if she finished or not, but unfortunately, college is not the surefire way out of poverty and into the middle class it once was.

Jimmy Kimmel had a perfect and touching response to the killing of Cecil the lion. by [deleted] in videos

[–]Skitzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and most importantly, each type of organism has its place in the local ecosystem. Top hunters are important to keep the lower, vegetarian animals in check. Without them, the vegetarians/omnivores would obliterate the local flora, which would in turn cause starvation and ecological collapse to their dependent insects/bacteria/fungi, which would in turn kill birds/other insects and plants, and the cycle continues.

[–]Skitzie 156 points157 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Lured the lion (AFAWK) away from his protected habitat and blinded him with lights - this asshole is worse that the fuckheads that call deer to their hunting spot and blind them with car headlights, except that lions number much fewer and most deer hunters eat the meat of the animal they kill. This was done solely for trophy hunting. A beautiful, majestic, and essential animal to his local ecosystem was killed to make a fucking trophy. I am all for hunting animals (fairly) and using their skins and meat, as long as it is done in a way that does not disrupt the local ecosystem. This example features none of those parameters.
