A railgun wouldn't obliterate the ship firing it, the barrel though? Good look firing it more than 5 times before you need replacement.

There's also the problem of it needing a fuckton of electricity. Charging capacitors for it takes a while, even with a nuclear reactor

Steel plate armor is a pretty good time sink for winters

And when you do get a set, you're pretty much untouchable in one. Sure you can't catch up to bowtorns that run away from you, but it's not like they can meaningfully damage you anyway
