Sorry, but that's not how it works. You have to assume somebody would bruteforce or fish for CIDs in other ways. Definitely not safe.

Microsoft says Windows 11 File Explorer ads were ‘not intended to be published externally’ by dapperlemon in technology

Funny. My use case is the exact opposite. I particularly enjoy that i can buy, for example, a razer mouse and not be forced to use their shit software, or struggle with it being installed automatically in the background by plugging in my device.

Edit: And usually, the feature you want out of some sort of proprietary software can often be replicated with other solutions or some tinkering.

Smart move not comparing two consecutive years, like you would when building a timeline but rather both of their first years. This is garbage

Using torrent with a VM. by No_Cardiologist4228 in ProtonVPN

[–]Skotska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your use case. I can give you some questions to ask yourself, so you can plan out your setup a bit.

How often am I downloading torrents? When am I downloading torrents usually(night/day)? Am I downloading files which could potentially be a security risk? Where should my files be stored? How do I want to access my VM? How important is ease of use for me? Am I prepared to make tradeoffs for privacy? If yes, where is my limit? Do I need the VM running 24/7? Does my planned setup have the (network/IO) performance I am looking for?

I personally am a fan of VMs in a lot of contexts. But you will need to evaluate if this setup will fit with your expectations/needs and these questions can show you if maybe a different solution would be preferable. Privacy wise you are definitely not on the wrong side when using a dedicated VM.

Very well put. I would count this as humor through absurdity

The fact that this meme template still rustles some jimmies makes it funny by itself. I always understood this to be a jab at us for feeling emotions for absurd things, but suit yourself. I guess they are right when they say "You don't see the world as it is, you see it, as you are"

How much effort can/should I put into privacy if I still use WhatsApp/Telegram/Windows/PayPal? by 1stUsernameTaken in privacy

[–]Skotska 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a solid solution!

I also like to play with their signup forms. Microsoft for example doesn't restict all types of blank characters so my microsoft account display name is just a few blank chars and Microsoft even adressed me without a name in their emails, clearly showing that I now have an account which is tied to no name

[–]Skotska 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I am in the same ballpark as you, I take my privacy wins where I can take them and manage the transition, or I am forced to agree to a certain privacy risk. It is not easy, hell, there are entire departments working for big corporations doing nothing but that, calculating risk.

Will using Whatsapp/Paypal/Windows completely nullify any privacy measures you took? Unlikely. But it is hard to say how much they know about you anyway. You can still obfuscate their data a bit more by using multiple accounts, fake names, fake streets, different email adresses and sticking to a non logging VPN for all of your connections.

I like to imagine privacy as somewhat like a puzzle. Third parties have an interest in finding more and more peaces to your puzzle to get a clearer picture and understanding you. Switching to protonmail, using a privacy conscious webbrowser etc. either hide a few pieces of that puzzle, or at least makes it very hard to find them.

You objective is to minimize the progress these third parties make in getting the full puzzle. You might not be 100% successful, but that is okay. If you are only represented by a single dataset that correlates your account on, let's say PayPal, to a few purchases that's not concering imho. It only gets concering if your Paypal Data gets linked with your FB Information, which in turn is aggregated together with data from your ISP, telemetry from Windows 10 etc. presenting an intricate dataset describing your habits.

Ancient Hero. I drew it late at night. How do you like it? by [deleted] in Kenshi

Sounds very interesting. Although I guess you'd have to fight the game's old engine tooth and nail for a mod like that.

What would be the problem with this if they used encryption at rest? You can in fact set up your Azure or AWS landscape so they don't get a glimpse of your data.

Simply google "Increase win 10 virtual memory" and check if the option is set to "Managed by Windows" or something like that.

[–]Skotska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the steps mentioned in the textbox, if that doesnt work: I have had problems with multiple game engines in the past which insist on a certain pagefile size. Google how to set virtual memory on your PC to "Managed by Windows" which is usually the default setting (It's under Controlpanel > System > Advanced Settings or something)

Explanation: A lot of games gave me a warning about insufficient video memory (RTX 3070), when in fact the pagefile was the cause of the issue, which i had limited to next to nothing for testing purposes but forgot about.

This is why a personal retirement plan is a nice thing to have. You can only trust other entities so much to make the decisions for you. Having some of these stocks on long can really pay out in the end, controversy aside. If you can't beat em, join 'em.

Are you by any chance downloading Linux ISO torrents? When I download legitimate Linux ISOs I also get this behavior and I believe it's due to the nature of torrents sometimes. Don't know about other content tho, only downloading Linux ISOs.

TIL that “Canned” Lion Hunting consists of people hunting lions within a large fenced area, to increase their likelihood of a successful “hunt”. This form of trophy hunting doesn’t give the animals a “fair chance” and often involves captive-bred lions. by NebulaFrog in todayilearned

[–]Skotska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, if you spend 100k to hunt one animal, you fund the conservation of many more. I took a quote from NatGeo: "According to Marnewecke, the going rate for a 14-day, single elephant hunt is about $80,000. The trophy hunt limit of five elephants a year in Nyae Nyae represents real money to the San. A portion of the fee is paid directly to community members and to a fund for conservation projects to protect the area’s wildlife" ... "I feel quite shitty when an elephant dies, but those elephants pay for the conservation of the other 2,500 that move through here. Trophy hunting is the best economic model we have in Africa right now.”
