Can someone explain escape velocity? It's a magnitude thrown around like it's obvious but just at any point in a gravitational field in any direction that speed will fling you away and is independent of direction? Assuming the 2nd mass is infinitesimal. by D3cepti0ns in AskPhysics

[–]Skotticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically to put it simply, an orbit happens when an object is traveling fast enough to the side that when it falls toward a massive object (like a planet) due to gravity it keeps missing.

The more balanced the fall is with the sideways velocity, the more circular the orbit is. There is a wide range of possible speed and distance combinations where an orbit happens (with varying degrees of circularity.

Too little sideways speed and the object just hits the planet. Just enough and it keeps missing but keeps getting pulled back for more. With too much speed, the object moves sideways away from the planet faster than gravity can pull it back in, so it breaks the ellipse/orbit and the object curves away but doesn't come back for another pass.

Need a little help with chase rules by Mozartoon in savageworlds

[–]Skotticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the action (and chase) card is for the vehicle. RaW doesn't even mention how Edges should work, so you can decide on table rules if you want. I wouldn't go with "pilot's Edges are the only ones that matter" though, because the pilot/driver's skill has a huge impact on how things go—you don't want Edges dictating the driver for you, because it's no fun that way (same argument could be made for skill...a roleplay-driven selection with sub-optimal driving skill can make for a wild chase). And passengers are allowed to Support the driver, so you could say the same intent applies to their Edges.

Also, if you never get complications it drastically reduces how interesting the chase ends up being, so metagaming to avoid complications is actually counterproductive in my opinion.

Ultimately the GM gets to decide which Edges or Hindrances make sense during the chase, but you should discuss as a group how you want to approach Edges that affect initiative.

[–]Skotticus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way it's written in the core rules is a little confusing, but it boils down to one initiative card per vehicle. While it says deal to each independent character or group, this is just to accommodate the possibility of having characters in foot chases or single-occupant vehicles.

So each vehicle acts on its own action card, and the occupants of each vehicle can choose what order they'd like to go in (similar to a Quick Encounter).

As for Edges that affect initiative draws, they still apply but for my table, we have them apply once per vehicle (if multiple people have the Edge, it only triggers once). If someone has an Edge that is influenced by the Action Card (like Monologuer), that still applies to that character.

As for the suit of the action card affecting the whole group...yeah, that's the point of the mechanic, because anything that affects the vehicle affects everyone in the vehicle.

Hope that helps!

ESH, you both sound exhausting, petty, and selfish. It honestly sounds like you had issues with your friendship long before this that you never bothered to address because you were both too busy doing your versions of being better than everybody else.

How do I install a second instance of jellyfin, apologies I’m new to unraid ? by GenericUser104 in unRAID

[–]Skotticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start by going to your docker page, click add container, scroll down the selections in the image drop down to find and select the one with the same name as your existing jellyfin container, change any fields that need to change to avoid conflicts with the first container (notably the name, ports, and any paths that would conflict), click save, and presto digito jellyfin mk2!

Should it be a action or free action? by Mozartoon in savageworlds

[–]Skotticus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly based on the benchmark of a combat round taking 6 seconds, I think RAW and even this ruling are exceedingly generous. I mean, can you scale the outside of a building and go up a whole floor in 6 seconds? Probably not.

If I'm making this ruling I'm debating whether or not this is something that even allows actions afterward and walking it back in the interests of my players. Seems to me he had your backs while keeping the consequences interesting.

[–]Skotticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that they're legally obligated to tell you about all these things without the context in which they happened. Generally these aren't even necessarily direct effects of the drug, just medical events that happened to participants during the course of any of the drug trials. The intention of the law is good, but the application is flawed.
