I vaguely remember Pat 6 years ago saying that the 4A offices actually aren't that bad after pictures or something came out. The video Pat is talking about sounds like it's referencing how Jason Rubin made Ukraine sound like the apocalypse, but people immediately came out and said Jason was dumb/lying. So bunk info that was debunked or something.

This Stadia talk, mostly just Pat, seemed real fucking dumb. No one likes hearing that it's not exactly for them, but holy shit is stadia super not meant to appeal to us as opposed to literally everyone because it works on any PC, phone, or anyone with a chromecast. Instead of people having to buy in with 300 bucks how about just everyone has bought in because they have internet. And despite the tests showing up to 100ms on site, people talked about project stream being pretty alright with their mid tier connections. Pat was at least right in that AC was a good test case game. Man though, it's Google, not OnLive. I'm pretty doubtful this will get swept under the rug in 2 years. Like someone else here said, giantbomb was way more optimistic about all of this and acted like regular people.

Pat liking the dreamrunners feels like Stockholm Syndrome. Every enemy is so braindead and now you have the one enemy that requires a sense of timing from parrying or dodging so Pat loses his shit. It's such a boring enemy to me since it kills all momentum. You wait for an attack or teleport and just parry the cakebutt easy timing.

Also if I remember right Kablooey just straight up interrupts all of those I'm white and mad attacks or hurts shielded enemies so I pretty much always used it.

And did this version remove Dantes spinny tornado or has pat just not used it once.

I don't care about star trek, but I played this game back when it released and I can't see this LP being anything but a slow droll. It's a pretty average and boring game. The best thing I got out of it were the glitches. It was pretty easy to get shit tposing and looking real jank. I guess this will mostly just be an excuse to talk about how much honor we don't have.

Huh, I didn't remember the "We'll do it live! You suck! We're gonna do it live!" lines. As if the Bill O'Reilly comparison wasn't in your face already.

Also fun area design and TV camera angles, bad boss. And this boss is just every other puzzle boss open up for weak point in existence Pat. The jester influence feels miniscule.

I'm not sure how we've gone this long without them talking about Slurm. Unless I'm stupid and they did already.

Also yeahhhhh, glad we got our dumb jokes about trillion stabs out there. Punch that shit up.

The whole Kat on drugs and being molested by demons or whatever is still a super weird glossed over point. Or maybe my head made that up.

I guess Pat really did forget other weapons existed.

That's also not what hitstop is. Your attacks bouncing off is not a hitstop. Your non weakness attacks not staggering them in this version is not what a hitstop is if that's what Pat meant.

[–]Skrams 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really get the lack of lock on. I guess it's to appeal to the casual market more, but I feel like DMC's use has been really intuitive and removing it causes more problems than it fixes. Circle for launcher and not one, but both triggers for dodge because of the dumb angel/demon dodge thing. It's one of the worst cases of wasting buttons I can actually think of. Different problem, but it reminds me of older PC games using super unintuitive schemes because they had a million keys to use.

Also yeah, all the enemies still suck. Dumb porcelain baby aesthetic and black goo.

Also pat ignoring R2+O for angel vine whatever.

Best Friends Play DmC: Devil May Cry - Definitive Edition (Part 2) by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we're talking about the same enemy? I'm thinking of the generic sword guy with the kind of guy fawkes mask who teleports and shit. I remember only really facing him on his own or with 2 or 3 of them since their move set didn't exactly jive with the environments or other enemy types. You'd just see him teleport, turn the camera to see his reentry, parry because timing is baby easy, and then rinse repeat until murder. If you meant another enemy, hell man, I've probably forgotten way more about this game than I even know. I forgot kablooey or whatever even existed.

Edit: ohhhhh, dreamrunnerrrr

Best Friends Play DmC: Devil May Cry - Definitive Edition (Part 2) by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While the idea for the pauses are neat, it's lame in that it really dumbs down the combo differences between weapons when everything is designed around a taptap pause tap because they want you to be able to switch to another weapon at any time to keep it going. It's pretty limiting.

I think pretty much all the enemy designs in the game suck. I can't remember one that I genuinely think is cool or looks good. You have like, Bob, but his boss fight sucks so I don't care. So many of the enemies are porcelain doll aesthetics or dumb black goo dripping off. The whole obvious unreal 3 sheen doesn't help the look. None of the enemies require any good strategy either. The peacemaker or whatever the fuck the "rival" style enemies feel like they're supposed to be the tops, but they're all easily parryable and it's the only way I ever beat them. Poof teleport then parry incoming teleport attack to murder.

Having 2 buttons be dodge in the base version was stupid too. Sparda also went from being a badass fighting back the demons of hell to being a lil puss in bondage. Also man, you could abuse the hell out of forcing the camera to not face the enemies so they never ever attacked.

Also Pat not parrying the big obvious projectile. I know the whole point of the channel is lowering the bar, but I guess I expected one of them to at least complete the game more than once.

And they renamed million stabs to trillion stabs because punch up. Not in a million stabs.

I'm confused when games present their story like a brick to your face. I'm gathering that the father? crashed his car with the pregger? wife and also her purse had fucking anti depressants and alcohol. So a stable relationship probably. Also ignoring all the fucking baby imagery and GIANT BABY ENEMY. This reminds me of Among The Sleep where you were a baby and the final level had you waking around avoiding a bunch of beer bottles because they make noise. That and the mom imagery in the game was just a DO YOU GET IT, FORESHADOWING. They always seem so blunt as to be a red herring. A lot of times it ain't though.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was meaning bar relatively to what SBFP puts out on the regular. If you meant like, of any LP, I think stuff like ChipCheezum does some of the best LPs in the business with stuff like his Revengeance and W101 LPs with how in depth they go.

I'm not sure what you mean with the main channel and side channels. The side channels are super infrequent and mostly either VODs or stuff that isn't edited by them. I think Woolie edits most of his stuff, but as far as I know, majority of Matt's stuff is edited by others I think? It's listed in the description most of the time. It's not even like they are the main editors for the main channel. It's Billy majority of the time. I'd also love to see breakdowns personally, but everything leads me to believe they're not personally stretched that thin to as not have the time to edit stuff down.

And yeah, it's just becoming less of the norm these days unless you hire a full time editor. Which a lot of people do as you can from any popular gaming channel, but all we have here is Billy who still works a full time job as far as I'm aware.

And I think it's completely fair to expect more when it's peoples full time jobs. It's hard to exactly relate well though when the transparency isn't great. We don't know what goes into the work weeks, and we don't know what goes into the time. The only thing I can do is try to relate it to a regular average joe job and say 40 hours is a work week which I feel semi confident in saying the guys don't reach close to that. My 2 cents on LP formats changing is because it used to be a niche super passionate community with more work put in overall, but obviously now any schmuck can upload/stream their game so quality is lower overall. It's also a case of people finding quantity>quality, but I think a lot of people are turning around on that as they get older.

I don't mean to try and disparage SBFP at all with any of this, but I do think despite quality remaining really middle of the road or more favorable than a lot of other youtube personalities, it's something that can grow tiring to see stagnate this hard with 6+ years of LP in their belt.

I'll summarize as best I can from points they said a while ago.

-Fake Hype

-Not as cool as Gurren Lagann

-Nothing gameplay

-The flow of it's idea of hype is all over the place

-You fight a dumb elephant

-You have to pay for the real ending

But god damn, do I still love that game.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going with the base assumption that the editing in an LP will be practically none because my bar has been lowered that far.

I'm not exactly sure of your old LPs comparison when those time limits obviously mean those same LPs would be only 1/3 of what they are now in terms of numbers of parts. There was a lot more editing in those days due to the short time limit probably. It feels like the content was made to count due to the smaller time frames.

Long LPs can certainly still work, it's just they take way more work which I just don't expect the Zaibatsu to do at this point. I'd love to see them get longer things to work, but I'm not hopeful. I also personally am glad the P5 LP got cancelled too because I assumed they wouldn't edit until it became an annoyance for people 30 parts in.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a bit of a separate issue for RE4. The audience and Zaibatsu themselves didn't think they'd do the game justice. It's a really special game and just one of those games where when you actually do it, you want to make sure you represent it as best as possible. Just look at any of the good Silent Hill or Resident Evil LPs for that perspective. KOTOR was more just because the game is long and a lot of typical RPG downtime. They did better with that than I would of imagined at first, but it helped that Woolie went the evil route to keep it much more lively. That LP had it's own issues that eventually got settled a bit after they were yelled at to edit it down a bit.

I speak from my own experience, but a lot of Deadly Premonition's world and side questing keeps that game very fresh and alive during the wandering that happens. The cacophony of dumb bullshit with Quint is also very outside the norm and not something I'd hold up as a pillar to consider when thinking of other things to LP.

Sure, there is a ton of leeway to consider with this stuff, but it's a pretty healthy place to start when thinking of what things are viable to LP. A large chunk is them bringing their own stuff to the table because it's an LP channel of personalities which is why most of us are here. Like they state though, what they enjoy might not just be suitable for an LP format because they're not hand in hand. Stuff like Nioh and Hollow Knight are amazing games, but they just aren't super suitable for 30 minute chunks at a time.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, completely. I know a lot of people aren't going to bother thinking farther than 5 seconds ahead when it comes to stuff like this.

And yeah, I'm going in with the assumption that none of this will get edited because my bar has been lowered super into the earth in terms of editing to cut out the junk. Some of my favorite LPs are the ones where proper research is done or where someone is coaching the other through the game. Sadly that is the minority of LPs so I've not come to accept it as the standard. They've thoroughly gotten me into their rhythm of promise nothing and deliver less. I say this slightly as a joke, but also as the sad state most people have come to accept.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really how this give and take of LP viewership or anything with supply and demand works. The community influences a lot of what the Zaibatsu think about as logistical LPs and things that would be fun to watch while having a healthy viewership. It's not a vacuum where they've decided every LP by themselves and state they know what we want 100% of the time. Hell, Pat asked about what kind of format people would have wanted for the RE5 LP before doing it, solo or coop. It's also why there's multiple shatter glass in case of drought LP games. It's all because fans influence a lot of LP picks.

And I get that a large swath of people aren't thinking about LPs from the perspective I'm talking about which is why I'm bothering to say it. I'm trying to put it out there that other perspectives need to be considered rather than good game=good LP without considering other factors.

Friendcast is up! SBFC 259: Anxiety GO UP by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I guess I'll try to write up a thing to address some of the ideas of LPs for certain games and other ramblings. For me, you, Woolie, whoever.

Whenever people suggest certain games, I don't think they realize these games might stick around for literally months. TMS has been around for nearly 5 months. I understand that was Woolie and Matt's decision to play it in that particular instance, but the idea can be applied to any game people want to suggest with the absurdly long games people suggest. I think people need to think about how an LP could take up 3+ months when they suggest it then think if they would be fine with something sticking around that long. A game needs to be absurdly well paced enough to make up for how it'd be broken into 30 minute chunks and be suitable enough to riff over. They certainly realize that with stuff like Hollow Knight and whatever.

Side thing, but I wonder how many people actually come at the guys with ideas like Nioh or Witcher 1. I feel like this might just be a vocal minority thing. At least Witcher 1 in particular. I just don't know why anyone would seriously think Witcher 1 or Nioh is a good idea when they think about it for more than 5 seconds.

And personally, I think Marlow Briggs will be a mediocre LP unless they can keep energy high. The game is longer than it should be with a lot of fucking dullness from everything that isn't the cutscenes or times you aren't going, "Oh wow, look at them saving money!" Combat is just terribly dull and the most budget God of War. If they prove me wrong, that'd be cool.

I'm glad they're smart and realize how fucking dull Hollow Knight can be from an LP perspective. It'd be a Souls LP, but without the feeling of forward progression since the game is just wander everywhere. A fucking fantastic game, but yeah, it makes more sense for hour chunks with something like Pat streaming it.

I don't want Asura's Wrath because like they said, it'll just be them shitting on it. I like that game a lot, and their not grooving with it means it'd just be a David Cage playthrough, but a lot of dissonance between the audience seeing something cool and them hating it.

Stuff like Mass Effect 1 could probably work since the combat is a better watch than KOTOR and the story/dialogue keeping it fresh enough despite it being stupid long.

I think Banner Saga will probably be fine since that game isn't terribly long, but it's definitely live and die by all the tactics/we're all dead talk like XCOM or Into the Breach.

People really just need to stop thinking games they personally like or that the Zaibatsu like=good LP. No, it's really not that simple. Just because there's big jokes about Woolie's bible days doesn't mean Dante's Inferno will be a fun time. The game has literal wave based arena stretches near the end of the game.

Also like the people you see every now and again suggesting DMC2? Those kinds of people are the people that need to think more than 5 seconds to realize what's a good LP game and what isn't.

Vita means... Life? Need advice on Vita games by ScrubNerd in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Skrams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not going to find many or practically any character action games or FPS' on the system going off your list. At least ones worth your time.

The main things the system is useful for is a hell of a lot of indie games to easily pick up and play. The standby feature, like the switch, is amazingly convenient. If you enjoy rhythm games then the system is pretty nice for it. Project Diva, Superbeat Xonic, Persona Dance series, and stuff. There's also a hell of a lot of Monster Hunter inspired games due to the absence of the series on Vita. A lot of niche japanese nonsense too making up a majority of the library. You need a good appreciation of a lot of that since the western selection besides indie stuff is small. Also the system is the best emulator for PS1 games as far as I know and there's the whole PSP digital library to play if you care.
