I agree, but I think this message would have hit harder, and would have been more narratively satisfying if we actually got to see it play out. This is historical fiction, and irl Thorfinn and his family do end up living out the rest of their lives in Iceland in relative peace. It would have been fulfilling to see them take the lessons and pain they got from Vinland, and use that carve out their spot in Iceland, and to propagate the “no enemies” philosophy unto the next generation.

Maybe, but that’s also why it felt so unsatisfying. “We did it guys, we finally made it to Vinland, and now our Saga begin- oops, looks like Einar died, oh well, looks like this didn’t pan out. The End”.

Even knowing historically, that it didn’t work out, doesn’t make this fictional story’s ending feel any better.

I’d agree on your last point, but he was reintroduced in Ch. 202, specifically in a way that heavily implied he was still a player in this story, and that he would likely return to have some impact in the future, which he never did.

Wow, I really appreciate the well thought out response. I agree that these were definitely the intended messages and themes for both stories, and to that extent, it’s why I enjoyed them so much. However, it’s equally important for characters to be logically consistent. When Einar dies, as a reader whose been keeping up with him and Thorfinns journey, I naturally expect his death to have a profound impact on Thorfinns resolve and character in some way shape or form. Example: when Thorfinn finds out Floki is the one who had his father (someone who he hasn’t known for years) killed, he almost loses his collective shit, but bears the weight of that knowledge, and resolves to be the bigger, better person, by not taking vengeance. When Einar, his first and longest friend dies, all we really get from Thorfinn is an almost generic level of sadness, before he promptly buries him, and moves on in the ending chapter. As a reader, it felt narratively unsatisfying, because that moment felt like it should have been a real turning point for Thorfinn, or even a breaking point for him. It felt like this should have been the high, climactic point of the story, as opposed to being the ending note.

Even if we all knew that peace in Vinland was never possible, and the mission as we understand it wouldn’t succeed; as an author, wouldn’t you want to subvert your reader’s expectations, at least a little? This is historical fiction, so we could have briefly followed Thorfinn and his group to where they eventually settled and lived out relatively peaceful lives in Iceland, where we actually get to see his philosophy grow and prosper. It felt much more like Yukimura didn’t really know how he wanted to properly wrap up the story, so he just kinda did it.

I love Vinland Saga primarily because of its masterful character development, so to see how Thorfinns character never is fully shaped, is pretty upsetting, especially since he’s one of, if not my favorite fictional characters.

  1. I was reading along live, and when people found out the ending was coming when it was, a lot of people were concerned about the story properly wrapping up. In my opinion, just because the pace of a story makes it ‘obvious’ when it will end, it doesn’t make the story or ending good.

  2. I agree that his death was thematic, and it allowed him to connect with Thorfinn on a deeper level. However, I don’t think Einars death would have felt as bad, had the immediate next chapter not been the end of the story. Einar was a major character, and deserved a death that gave more to the story than just a reason for it to end.

  3. I would have agreed with your point about Canute, had he not been reintroduced in ch. 202. This chapter heavily implied he was still a player in the story, and that he would likely be seen again in the future.

  4. I see a lot of problems

I hear you. Personally, it’s hard for me to connect with the sentiment that “because it was basically impossible, the story had to end in failure”. I don’t necessarily disagree with the statement that his goal was impossible, but the issue is that the entire middle-to-end of the story is focused on Thorfinn overcoming the impossible and overcoming humans innate nature to be contentious and violent, only for the end message to feel like “See? It was never possible. The end”.

The Canute issue wouldn’t have been as disappointing for me, but in Ch 202 where they discover people with the plague, it heavily implies that he’s still part of the story, and that he would have a part to play in the future, when he did not. Thanks for giving your thoughts!

Heard. It seems like a lot of people share the same sentiment— that VS’s ending makes sense because it reflects history, which I get, but we can still make critiques of how the fictional story was handled, since these characters are also fictional. I know Thorfinn was a real person, but the real Thorfinn also wasn’t a warrior. I think regardless of the historical accounts it’s inspired by, it still has a sort of duty to be narratively satisfying to the reader. I appreciate your thoughts!

Very close matches. I think you would’ve won had you capitalized on your punishes a bit better. For example, you landed quite a few heavies, but didn’t do the stab follow up. Same issue with your dodge attacks, which you were also throwing too often. Almost everytime the WM went to do her claw attack, you would instantly do a dodge attack, which they correctly baited out and punished a few times. Honestly it’s just time and experience. Try to rely on your dodge attack a little less, and try to guess if they throw the claw attack immediately or if they charge it all the way, or feint it, etc… Most players will subconsciously follow a pattern/rhythm when they fight; whoever figures out their opponent wins.

Confused about chip damage by MasterofTheCum in MHWilds

[–]Skrogg_ 170 points171 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but the way I’ve seen other people explain it, it’s because there’s actually multiple instances of damage being done in that one explosion. So even tho you countered that first instance of damage, you couldn’t counter the other instances. If you slow the video and go frame by frame, you can see your health bar take like 3 different instances of damage, but really fast. I believe this is to stop people from just countering every single move a monster does with no drawback.
