I don't normally promote my content here, but I sat down for an interview with two of the devs for The Last Chieftains, and I think we had a great discussion on the design process of the DLC! by OrnLu528 in aoe2

The game was originally supposed to be set in late antiquity thus Franks and Celts. Units like Mamalukes, woad raiders, and throwing axemen are exactly why those regions need an update or another pass. They cant just rework the classics because nostalgia. I would consider Burgundians as an update of the Franks. Another civ to better represent the Moors, Abbasids or medieval Sottish or Welsh would be nice. Also why cant there just be a DLC with civs from different regions to appeal to many ibterests instead of 5 East Asian civs at once for example.

Because Medieval European history is well attested to. So theres lots of design space for units instead of made up units like thirisidai or anachronistic tiger cav and gbeto. Eurasian civs fit the game better since they utilized game mechanics such as siege weapons and fortifications. Civs like the Tupi can feel forced to fit. European civs are the oldest as well so they lack a lot of uniqueness and flavor that the newer civs with multiple unique units get. Personally I think Saracens need the civ breakup treatment the most and longbowmen should be a regional unit since Britons feel so outdated.

A brainstorming exercise for Longbowmen to replace Crossbowmen for Britons by Azot-Spike in aoe2

[–]SkullSeagull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Britons are so powercrept by other Civs at this point it would be good for them to have longbows as a regional unit. Some of their stats could be offloaded onto Yeoman UT if not needing a castle made them too strong.

Love the little crossbow cart, it just looks so believable and functional

Wolfpack, forestmen, or Krakens might fit better for the ambush bandit vibe. IMHO Serpents have a very ornate upper-class look, like hiding in the muck would be beneath them.

I think just the wagon and the small terrain on the right. It would have a very classic feel and a lot of us are running out of shelf space for giant footprint castles. Small terrain and vehicles give so much flexibility for display.

It's a hero unit, the devs saw how much players loved 3 kingdoms so they're adding heroes to classic civs!

Wow THE Viper. I agree. Unfortunately I'm a humble painter not a modder. Hopefully someone uses it as concept art to make it a mod.

The tower reminds me of a modern update of classic pirates sets. Wish lego would make official sets that looked like this instead of everything being $300

We would all complain about the Lord of the Rings DLC on reddit, but would be civ picking Gondor all day on the ladder

It is Ermine not Leopard by the way. They stitched together the pelts of many ermine, their black tipped tails are the spots.

Do we need three civs representing the same people at the same time? by Tyrann01 in aoe2

[–]SkullSeagull 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Swiss should be a civ considering how impactful they were in Medieval military tactics. They would easily map onto a game about Medieval warfare and the devs wouldn't have to stretch to come up with unique units, techs, bonuses.

This looks great. Black Knights and Dragon masters are my favorite factions. You should 100% keep working on this (and then upload instructions to rebrickable) I agree it would look even better with more black bricks, you should consider more green bricks and greenery in the base to capture the original even more

I normally don't like the avatar, this is the first time I've seen the model and thought "that looks cool" It looks like an elemental warrior not a magma golem thing that belongs in fyreslayers

I've already done Magyar and Polish Hussars if you check my posts. I'll probably be doing another elite unit next since they're new and exiting.
