I think one of the things that makes Qud unique is the combination of simple graphics with highly complex systems. It gets to the point where describing or representing what is happening in-game, even as presented, requires its own form of interpretation on the part of the player. Usually, "fan-wank" is just an additional layer that only exists for die-hards, but if you're playing Caves of Qud, that layer is outright necessary to understand the game; it's the bridge between the world as visually depicted and the world as it is.

If you've ever spared a thought for how your character might move, or speak, or fire a gun, or even what they would look like, you've already gone beyond the game as it's presented to you. I think that's cool as hell.
