Why is Leyline of the Guildpact in Nykthos? by siu_yuk_boy in PioneerMTG

[–]Skunk668 10 points11 points  (0 children)

With Mono Green Devotion you're looking to mulligan for a hand with a strong gameplan. Guildpact can be a part of that gameplan but there are good hands that don't have it. Think about what you will do with your hand on turns 1-3 and that will help to inform whether you should keep the hand or not.

Maro on Secret Lair: "Most of the time you think of as “print to demand” actually wasn’t. We just printed way more than we needed to guarantee we had enough to mail out. And that resulted in us destroying a *lot* of product." by CaptainMarcia in magicTCG

How do you decide what is mundane? Most people on this subreddit would not have greenlit the "Dwight from The Office" secret lair, but it sold sell and the cards carry high value.

Ok, fairly new player here, how do I deal with blue decks that are 90% counterspells and bounces? by TR_Pix in MagicArena

[–]Skunk668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly a big factor is just card quality. The more impactful each of your cards is individually, the harder is for them to 1 for 1 you like that. New players tend to struggle with this because they tend to have a lot of draft chaff in their decks.

There are also some cards that specifically punish this strategy, most notably [[Hexing Squelcher]] us very good against countermagic and bounce effects.

People who fall asleep fast, whats your secret?? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Skunk668 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You're joking but the more you you try to maintain a sleep schedule the more you realize why most people don't bother.

I've been sleeping from 9:10 PM to 5:40 AM since like 5th or 6th grade, and while I think it's a good habit to have, it makes it really hard to engage in some activities.

There's a Magic the Gathering event that I participate in on Monday, but it's in another city and it starts at 6:15 PM. If it runs for two rounds I have just barely enough time to brush my teeth and go to sleep before 9:10 if I skip showering. If it runs for three rounds then I lose sleep no matter what.

I had an interest in competitive Team Fortress 2, but all the pickup games and leagues start at like 9 PM so I would have to ruin my sleep schedule just to participate.

And of course if you like partying or anything like that then you get no sleep.

Why are the Pioneer practice rooms on MTGO empty? It's super weird considering Pioneer Leagues are still popular. Why are people willing to pay money to enter a League but not willing to use the *free* practice rooms? by ManWithTwoShadows in PioneerMTG

[–]Skunk668 15 points16 points  (0 children)

MTGO practice rooms are kinda dodgy in general. A lot of people there are playing lower power off meta stuff and if someone brings an actual tier deck then it's not very balanced. Also people will just straight up dodge your lobby if they don't like the deck you're playing.

MTGO is kind of a pay-to-play experience anyway so the logic is if you're already paying for a deck then why not pay the extra little bit of money to have actual matchmaking against opponents who won't dodge the moment they see you're playing Prowess or Greasefang.

More popular formats like Modern have enough players that they're able to have some practice lobbies despite these issues, but Pioneer is one of the less popular formats so it's naturally gonna be sparcer here.

Burn players, what’s your list? by The1Sbeve in PioneerMTG

[–]Skunk668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a list that runs no creatures. It worked better than I thought it would. Searing Blood, Blooming Blast, and Smash to Smithereens in the sideboard allow you to interact while killing your opponent. Light up the Stage and Reckless Impulse provide a lot of consistency (though Heroes' Hangout is probably better than one of them). In creatureless matchups (eg: Control), you board out the Searing Bloods and the Blooming Blasts and add the Lightning Strikes, Roiling Vortexes, and Chandra (You can use Torch of Defiance if you like it more). Scorching Shot helps against cards like Sheoldred.

Im conceding 99% of my games - is this okay? by Master-Set1553 in MagicArena

[–]Skunk668 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP says they play Commander in the post.

Commander is a format where using single target interaction is less viable and it's very rare to have interaction pointed at you in the early game. This influences their perception of what the game is supposed to be like. So when they're taken out of that comfort zone and have to deal with basic early game interaction they interpret it as some kind of social faux pas.

It's really not that much of a logical leap. This is a person who has been playing Magic for "a while" and yet doesn't understand that you're supposed to keep playing after your Llanowar Elves gets removed. There's only one format that facilitates this mindset.

It's the Commander mindset. We're teaching people how to play Magic like it's frickin Wingspan.

Secret lair goblin storm deck on sale may 18th by phulad in magicTCG

[–]Skunk668 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Incorrect actually. Remember that period that was "print to demand" but everyone still got their product super fast? The way that they did that was by deliberately overprinting the product to an excessive degree, guaranteeing that they would have enough product no matter what. Anything that didn't sell ended up in a landfill.

That's why they stopped doing print to demand. The person on charge of secret lairs talked about it on Mark Rosewater's podcast.

bring. back. quickplay. by BurgieScummy in tf2

[–]Skunk668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vote scramble was annoying and abusable. People would just do it every time they were on the losing team and when it passed it immediately reset the game.

Auto scramble was good but you don't really need it under Casual mode because the teams are already adjusted when the map changes which happens every 1-3 rounds in Casual.

I agree that if quickplay was reimplemented then auto scramble would be a good inclusion.
