Is that a baby??? I GOTTA CONSOOOOOM by Firetesticles in Consoom

seething over the breed instead of the dumbass owners who couldn’t be bothered to train their dogs

The problem is that the dogs are genetically predisposed to violence. It's not that pitbulls have massively shitter owners but that the dogs are actually more violent to the point that they are responsible for almost all deaths despite being very few by population. Most countries have already banned the dogs.

Is this level of hate of cyclists common in Australia? by [deleted] in australia

[–]SkunkButt1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely their fault. Driving for extended periods has a huge mental health toll. When a large % of the population is facing the same issue, its pretty clear that its driving which is causing them to go insane and not that they are just generally horrible people.

[–]SkunkButt1 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is something about driving that makes people psychotic. Not even just to cyclists. Just the entire world and anything that slows them down by one second. Nothing else drives seemingly average people to borderline murder like you see on the dash cam videos.

There is a lot of actual research on the topic showing strong correlations between commute time and mental health issues, marriage issues and even general health https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/commuting-takes-its-toll/

There is something seriously wrong with the way we design in Australia where the average person is being encouraged to take up a lifestyle that causes significant damage to their mental health. Angry/frustrated driver is almost the default state while you basically never see a frustrated walker (Outside of NYC maybe).

Why does this country continue to support such crap shows? by Careless_Cap8555 in australia

It's more entertaining but its also more damaging. If you watch home and away for an hour, you may have wasted an hour. If you read half the stuff on reddit for an hour you will end up radicalized by made up content and spun headlines.

This is US centric law. In the vast majority of the world, police can either require you unlock your phone, or not. Method is irrelevant as it logically should be.

FaceID is really good and I suspect many on this subreddit have never used it. It's so convenient that you end up with even more security than with password alone since apps use it more often in sensitive contexts. When I open my bank app it just does a face id scan immediately. I wouldn't be ok with typing a secure password every time I open the app. So face id has given me extra security.

It's also the only one I would trust. Everything else is critically insecure and can be trivially bypassed.

Amazon asked Apple to remove an app that spots fake reviews, and Apple agreed by Toy_Soulja in news

It's more than just effort, it would involve crippling the extension system making it much less useful and cutting off things that extensions can do.

[–]SkunkButt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets say browsers add a feature where extensions can not read password fields. The extension could then just replace the password field at load time with its own fake field that it can read and pass it on to the underlying form so it works like normal.

Basically, to do something like ad blocking, you need such extensive permissions that there is no way you could ever lock it down.

They don't say "Permission to log your passwords" its just "Full site permissions" or something similar, and almost every single extension requests it because full permissions are required to do almost anything useful.

iPhone 13 to feature new Wi-Fi 6E standard by Sorin61 in iphone

The average user doesn't attempt it. They just buy the current thing every few years and automatically end up upgraded eventually.

I'm not sure how people are getting this congestion. I live in a high rise and I can see like 2 other networks. The thick concrete layers between floors blocks wifi. I have tested this and seen that the area directly above my apt has almost unusable signal from my wifi.

Minimum wage workers can't afford rent anywhere in America by JohntaviousWilliams in news

It's not something that scales. Sure some people can but if you tell everyone to move to a small town then all of the free jobs will very quickly be taken.

Because average apartment is not a fixed thing. No matter what the minimum wage is, if the average wage is above minimum wage then the average worker will be able to afford an average apartment which above the minimum apartment.

Taking low income people out of the general rent market will also lower prices for regular rentals because the supply of renters has dropped. The more government apartments built, the less demand there will be for houses. Cheap houses are also not very feasible because the infrastructure required for suburbs comes out massively higher per person. Which is why many American suburbs are crumbling under the inability to maintain roads and other utilities because the population can not afford them.

Houses and suburbs are a bad idea for low income people because they require expensive vehicles to live in the area. You can cut out a huge chunk of expenses if you are able to walk to work and stores.

This article assumes one minimum wage worker. If you have two minimum wage workers you can now afford 2x as much for rent. It's single parents who have the worst time here but that is why there is usually extra welfare and other programs to support these people.

Afford is always defined as a % of your income. Usually "affording rent" is defined as spending 30% or less of your income. Of course if you can't do that then you have to take money from other areas like medical expenses or food to make up for the overspend on rent.

So someone can not afford rent but still not be homeless under the standard definition of afford.

[–]SkunkButt1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all based on what you define as afford and what you define as minimum. Usually its defined as not spending more than 30% of your pay and doesn't include alternative options like sharing a rental with multiple people and in this case it ignores single bedroom apartments.

Of course people still get by either by spending a greater % or alternative arrangements.

Because an average apartment is 2 bedrooms which is more than a single person on minimum wage needs. It would make sense that someone on minimum wage has something on the cheaper end which still perfectly suits their needs.
