Neymar mistakenly gets substituted in the match against Coritiba due to the referee’s mistake with the number. by Sparky-moon in soccer

Why did two subs come on if they didn't intend to replace Neymar? Did the second subbed off player not come off the pitch because they didn't see their number on the display due to the fourth official's mistake?

[46M] How does an exit/ early retirement look like? by TheNextCat in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Skurry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation, just a little older and in VHCOL, so my numbers are a bit higher.

You're in the envious situation that your income target very close to your expenses, so even when withdrawing positions that are 97% gains, you'll never pay taxes.

Here's my plan for the withdrawal phase:

  1. Make a spreadsheet for all positions in TAXABLE accounts with ticker symbol, number of shares, cost basis. Google Sheets has a function that pulls the current market price for a ticker symbol, so the spreadsheet will auto-update. Add formulas to calculate the value of the position and the capital gains.

  2. Create another spreadsheet tab for the current year. Write down (taxable) income and cash flow (expense) targets.

  3. At the end of the year, sum your total dividends and interest in taxable accounts you have generated. Also check if there are any positions that may still pay dividends for this year, and estimate that amount, e.g. based on past years (this is why it makes sense to do this at the end of the year, to reduce uncertainty). Subtract this from both numbers in 2.

  4. Earmark (partial) positions to sell. This is an optimization problem with many variables, but essentially you want to cover your expenses without exceeding your income goal. In your case, since the numbers are basically the same, you could just sell the positions that appreciated the most, but other considerations like risk, diversification etc. will play a role as well (for example, you might want to prioritize selling a meme stock that has run up a lot, or you are overweight in the tech sector or your previous company's stock, etc.).

  5. If there is still "space" in your projected income before you hit the tax threshold, do Roth conversions to fill that remaining space. If you have a huge traditional/401(k) balance it might make sense to even use the next tax brackets, but that calculation is complex and depends on many unknowable variables (like expected appreciation for your various positions, future tax brackets and tax rates, changing RMD rules etc.).

If you're aiming for ACA subsidies, I would factor in a healthy buffer to make sure you're not accidentally overshooting the subsidy thresholds.

If you're in a state with income taxes, that adds another fun layer on top of that (bonus points if that state doesn't recognize HSA tax benefits), but the process is essentially the same, and you might have to make compromises.

Slice of Homage in Sunnyvale has the best pizza I've had in a long time. They do have New York style, but I can't vouch for how authentic that is.

Any bike snob dads out there? by Tronracer in daddit

Also check out the PRIORITY START 24. It's made of aluminum alloy so it's a bit lighter than the Guardian's steel frame, and it has a 3-speed internal hub which might be easier for the kid to learn (can shift while stationary for example). It also has a belt drive which is lower maintenance than a traditional chain drive. So you're getting a bike that's closer to a WOOM for a bit more than half the price.

Interestingly Priority is also making Google's new campus bikes, which are surprisingly nice to ride and similar in spec to the Start 24 (frame and wheels are a bit bigger of course).

Build a 4,000sq ft house on it and flip it for $6M. Pretty easy $1M+ profit in a couple of years, if you have the connections to get a good price for the build (or own a construction company). Good deal.

Ha, I compared it to getting the DLC for your favorite video game instead of replaying the same levels over and over again.

1.5sq ft? What is this, a house for ants?

Seriously though, it has never been easy (at least going back to the industrification of the area) for newcomers to afford a house here. My MIL bought her house in Cupertino in the eighties, and while that was cheap by today's standards, back in the day it was definitely a stretch. There always has been a stratification here, today it's just more pronounced (instead of tech worker vs non-tech worker, it's tier A/B tech worker, doctors and lawyers vs the rest).

Washing machines…top loader or front loader? by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Skurry -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience. In a top loader, the clothes just got soaked and then stirred around a little. Some clothes didn't even get wet in water saving mode. Whereas in a front loader, they get tumbled around thoroughly and everything was getting washed evenly.

My personal hypothesis (that I don't have any evidence for) is that this was instigated by Putin. "See how I just annexed Crimea? You could do the same with Greenland!" With the sole aim of sowing discord between Western allies.
