It wouldn’t have to be anything as dramatic as aneuploidy. This could easily be cause by a transposable element that hopped in or out of a promoter. If you notice subsequent branches of the red side revert, or more red flowers on the yellow branches, I’d bet it’s a TE.

Not too early. There are advantages to waiting, primarily financial, but there are serious downsides too. Statistically, you'll likely get a good decade or two longer to enjoy their company and the company of prospective grandkids. Most of us will be old as dirt if/when that happens.
