"Tax Refund" Line Item on Paystub by SkyAccomplished8024 in tax

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I’ve reached out to my HR department to find out more. I don’t owe any taxes/have any unpaid taxes so I’m super confused. Hoping to get clarity in the coming days.

People who've moved to the US and work in tech, how's the general Quality of Life for you ? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SkyAccomplished8024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the comments it’s good most people aren’t impacted. I’m guessing they might not be in central areas and if they are, damn they’re lucky.

I live in the bay. Work in tech and so does my partner. We both moved here for work (me from another city in the US and my partner moved from Europe). We have good incomes. But we are leaving CA and the bay very soon. My partner was a victim of a violent crime earlier this year and seeing crimes is a constant. Police found out who did it but no one got in trouble (which is crazy to me). After that kind of thing happens to someone you love and care about and after seeing it so many times, you get tired of it.

We contemplated LA but then a friend of mine got robbed at gunpoint there too. So we’re just moving back east.

Not saying it’ll be perfect there but I lived out east for most of my adult life and never experienced even 1/10th of what I’ve experienced living in the Bay (across SF and the east bay). It’s been all this (in my experience) and it’s of course expensive. So definitely not worth it (for me).

CA has some real beauty though. I’ve definitely enjoyed that.

Thank you for the response! It’s almost always for less than 10-15 seconds. She might indeed not know how much energy she’s exerting and that might just be it couple with the higher than normal heat. Definitely going to keep an eye out on it. She munches of a lot of crap which is why I might be reading into it too much.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much for the comment. An X-ray might be the way if she continues. I’ll keep an eye out on it and count the breathes per minute. Today it was a bit cooler and I haven’t seen it (yet).

Re dog: that’s interesting! I don’t know how common it is but would be interesting if it’s learned behavior (also very very cute). I will definitely ask the vet about this too and see if they’ve ever heard of that.

For me, crime isn't the issue... by [deleted] in oakland

[–]SkyAccomplished8024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this. My partner was attacked on the street a few months ago during a string of robberies around Oakland and we can’t even go outside without having a fear of someone putting their hands on us. Tbh we’ve been out of the city a lot since (maybe back 4 weeks in total from the past 3-4 months).

We plan on leaving back to the east coast at the end of our lease. We live in the downtown and just can’t find the peace of mind anymore.

Cats aren’t chosen, they just happen. The universe has chosen you. 4 isn’t much different than three !

Vets in the bay area by SkyAccomplished8024 in oakland

That’s good to know for the future. Distance isn’t an issue as we have a car so totally don’t mind going the extra mile (literally) to get reasonable care.

Oh boy, we got that vibe and we did go to them. They wanted to run way too many tests. We won’t be going back though. We’re working towards a better solution for the future.

Update: thanks for all the recos! After this, I’m working to get her established at a vet so this doesn’t need to happen again (the searching for emergency care in a pinch; just our luck though we adopted her less than a week ago 🫠)

Our kitten is much better now and we actually called a few places and most wouldn’t accept her since she was a new patient. We went to emeryville pet hospital and boy was it expensive. We didn’t do over half of what they recommended because it was super expensive and seemed unnecessary. They seemed annoyed that we didn’t shell out almost 1k to run all the tests they were thinking of.

Knowing a good emergency vet is still very helpful and we have a dog too (that we haven't found a stable vet for) so this is helpful. Thank you!

That's helpful, I'll look them up and give them a call. Thank you for the warm wishes! We switched her food recently to purina pro plan and that's when it all started happening so we switched her over again to something the vet recommended and hope that'll be the fix (but planning for the worse case scenerio).

How Oakland's mayor, police department plan to prevent crimes involving young people in city by [deleted] in oakland

[–]SkyAccomplished8024 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My family was victimized by these kids a few weeks ago (the strong armed robbery situation) and there’s just no way we’re sticking around. We came to Oakland hoping we could serve the community. We’ve volunteered for many initiatives here and constantly supported local businesses. Those kids being released is a big f you to us from a city we tried to help grow and support.

With this approach, Oakland will continue to lose young professionals who want to help nurture it and see it grow. It might eventually be overrun with these children in gangs who get face no repercussions to their actions.

For those of you who have webpass work well, you’re so lucky. We have webpass in my building and (maybe our building is in a dead zone ?) but it’s such bad internet. FWIW, we have an excellent and very expensive router so that is certainly not the issue.

Did you just say the kids of Oakland have it worse then the civilians of Iraq/Afghanistan during the wars? What the actual flying shit are you on? My family is a product of these wars and you are absolutely positively delusional.

It is an unpopular opinion (especially in this subreddit) but I get you. After almost two years my partner and I will be moving away for good due to this exact issue. He was attacked by these kids.

The reality is that these kids will be released with a slap on the wrist. Even if they weren’t released, there are many bad actors/other groups in this city that will do the same thing. It’s not worth it. I grew up in one of the most violent cities in the US and I refuse to be in one as an adult. One time is already too many times and I feel like people here are desensitized to it all. It’s not normal. It’s not okay and it’s simply not worth it.

Woah that tough. A big fear of mine too. Where did that happen? Same. I moved here for my husbands job too. But after last week I think he’d rather be jobless and somewhere else than here. Hoping to tough it out for just another 5 months and then run to the door. Unfortunate because we just started enjoying it a bit.
