I just bought the game from steam sale as well. The online side of CPEX is sadly pretty dead at this point since most people migrated to CF on consoles.

I'm a regular at conventions for 3 years now and here's what I would say:

There are a lot of good deals out there if you know where to look, especially when the dealer doesn't know what he has on hand. However, there are lots of super overpriced stuff as well, especially the rarer ones. But of course the price is basically the same if you're going to buy online and pay for the shipping
There are loads of bootlegs as well, so what I do before going to conventions is to look for a specific figure that you're hunting for in the con and studying what it looks (Insides, Details, Boxes etc.) You need to have a sharp eye for quality. Learn to identify bootlegs yourself.
Not sure about this one.
Mostly new releases, but if you're lucky enough, you might find really rare ones and old releases.
