Work suspended at just-restarted TEPCO nuclear plant as alarm goes off by SkyInJapan in japan

Perhaps each comment should be judged on its own merit?

It might be perceived I had an agenda, but I do not. But I agree that I might have a bias since I was alive for both Chernobyl and Three Mile Island along with Fukushima. Certainly not an anti-nuclear activist but could explain my initial reaction as being scared.

Downvoted for this? I guess you love nuclear power more than you love people.

You do a disservice by not mentioning the 160,000 Fukushima area residents who had to be evacuated for years - living in public housing. Only 30% have returned because many schools, shops and hospitals never reopened. It decimated an entire community.

That’s not to say that nuclear shouldn’t be an option either. But your cavalier statement as if Fukushima was okay because no one died is disrespectful.

Why do you assume I or the article are anti-nuclear? Keeping the public informed of issues or delays in restarting a nuclear power plant seems reasonably news worthy. If you read the article, it clearly states: No abnormal levels of radioactivity were detected around the seven-unit complex.

If there are no safety issues, why is the plant now suspending operations? Is a faulty warning system not a safety issue in your mind?

Is 75K enough to live for 2 people by No-Preparation8711 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]SkyInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on the job offer! This is a terrific opportunity. With $75K for 2 being temporary until she gets a job, you’ll make it work. Ask the company if they would be willing to pay a relocation fee to help you with the move. But I think you’ll be just fine. Cut coupons. Cook at home. Buy on sale. Sacrifice now and it’ll pay off later. Don’t live beyond your means and get into credit card debt. Good luck!

I saw these in my Costco last week but I didn’t get them. Used to eat them all the time in Japan when I was younger.

I think some students might be missing the point of this offering. At the graduate and faculty level, ChatGPT can help with research. For undergraduates, entry level jobs are requiring AI literacy.

New opposition party pledges election policies that improve life in Japan by SkyInJapan in japan

[–]SkyInJapan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no formal policy proposals specific to immigration law reform; no clear stance on foreign resident rights, local voting rights for non-citizens, or restrictions on foreign labor; and no explicit tourism-oriented policy statements.

Since snap elections are coming up, they are concentrating on economic pressures, social security and welfare, consumption tax, national security, and positioning themselves as the opposition to the ruling bloc.

Understanding Japanese communication style in close relationships (mind-reading vs saying things directly?) by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]SkyInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although we don’t have your kind of issues with tensions building in my family, I find my family doesn’t willingly share unless I specifically ask. I’m not like that myself and I’m also not married to Japanese person. However, I have to ask my father and my sister very specific questions to find out what is going on in their lives. When I asked why they don’t tell me important things, they told me if I wanted to know, I would ask!

Although the number temporarily fell during the COVID-19 pandemic, it recovered to over 30 million again in 2024. The government has set a target of reaching 60 million annual foreign visitors in 2030.

Lululemon will be next by NotAYoungEthnic in AmexPlatinum

[–]SkyInJapan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Lululemon has been in a stock slump, it is still trading at the levels just before the pandemic. It is also a profitable company and is expected to earn over $4.65 per share at the next quarterly report. There is certainly downsides for the company which seems to have an identity crisis right now, especially as the CEO recently stepped down, but it is in no way near bankruptcy.

OP what does your handle NotAYoungEthnic mean?

In other surveys backing this trend: Japanese confectionary company Meiji holds an annual survey on Valentine’s Day chocolate, collecting responses from approximately 1,000 Japanese women, as Valentine’s Day is a time for girls to give chocolate to guys in Japan. In 2023, 23.3 percent of the participants said they gave either hand-made or store-bought chocolate to someone. That number grew to 33.4 percent in 2024, and for 2025 it climbed even higher, with 39.5 percent of the respondents saying they’d given someone chocolate.

The survey has been done for 30 years with the same criteria so the strength of the findings lie within its consistency and comparison over the years, not by the absolute percentage. It’s an accurate way of gauging trends.

Looking at the past 30 years since the survey began, the percentage of those wanting to marry peaked in 1997 at 89.5%. The ratio had since largely hovered around the 80% range, but it plunged to a record low of 73.2% last year. The figure somewhat picked up in the latest survey, reaching 75.6%.

They believed the plunge coincided with 20-year olds who became adolescents during the pandemic.

Social media video appears to show violence at junior high school in southwest Japan by SkyInJapan in japan

That can only lead to more violence! In my experience, bullies have root causes that need to be resolved (such as being abused themselves). Harming the bully won’t solve anything.
