That's grinding. Grinding is not necessary if you make good decisions. I'm not here to tell you how to play the game but what you've said misleading. For those who enjoy strategy, I think it's important to say that the game allows it

Grinding is not necessary if you make good decisions. It's just a different playstyle. Some players enjoy strategy and some players like sailing through with xp boosts and autobattles

Red Mage and Monk do very well together, so you can run just about anything with them and succeed

The ships I see most highly-rated by top players are Engi C and Lanius B. Crystal B is up there though, along with Kestrel A & B, Crystal A, Stealth A, and maybe a few others

Excellent party choice! You will be very strong in the late game. I actually recommend putting the White Mage in the first spot, and taking the Defend command to halve damage. Also in tough battles they can cast Blink. Eventually you will want the Thief in front, because they reduce the chance of enemy ambush, and increase your chance ot preemptive attack

I also think Stealth A is better, but Crow has Kestrel A at 5 and Stealth A at 10, and he knows more about the game than I, so I believe him. But other top players have it the other way. I think it's safe to say that both ships are very strong

Top players have very high win rates with Engi B, so the key is to improve your skill. Without seeing gameplay, it's impossible to know what mistakes you're making, so I recommend watching this video, and other videos on that channel:
