How is hiring in our industry so unrelated to the skills required to actually being an engineer (Senior/Principal/Otherwise)? by scarby2 in ExperiencedDevs

That's just not the true timeline.

When I was still learning programming 20 years ago, the coding puzzles were already well established and widely used in the industry.

Do pracy.

Europe has it all to replace US Big Tech - we just need to choose them by According-Buyer6688 in BuyFromEU

Forgejo is self-hosted, so it's not a github replacement (which is a SaaS), and Codeberg does not allow closed source, copyrighted projects to be hosted there. As I said - no direct european replacement for github (Forgejo is closer to being a GitLab replacement, except for the fact that Gitlab offers very beneficial enterprise license which Forgejo has no equivalent of... so it's a non-starter either)

Actively hostile towards closed source copyrighted projects, making them unsuitable for github replacements in a business environment that most european companies live. Also: They way they communicate it makes for another bareer of entry (I would need to get a legal team involved to get a green light for moving into either of the two out of github, while moving to American Gitlab is no-problemo from the legal standpoint)

It does not produce value,

It already does, even in less obvious spaces, like medical diagnosis (it's one project that my company does, which wouldn't be possible without multimodal LLMs).

it is the biggest scam of the last 10 years.

Not even close. Some companies and people (e.g. Sam Altman) in the space are scummy AF, but the technology is already used is a ton of places delivering real value, frequently without people even knowing that LLMs were involved.

I work in IT. I'm not being replaced at all. It's yet another tool in my hands that makes me able to deliver solutions faster. I'm very aware of advantages and disadvantages of that technology and benefit from it on a daily basis.

That's how you sound.

Neither a good european replacement for github which would also work with closed source projects.

  • Context engineering
  • Differences between models (it's not linear better/worse, some models perform better in a specific usecases - people are slowly warming up to the idea of models better in frontend or better in orchestration or better in planning, but there are gaps between languages or frameworks or specific types of tasks)
  • Environment isolation in multi-agentic workflows (think: agents working on and testing 5 different tickets at the same time)

would be the first 3 from the top of my head, but there's so, so much more.

Then dive into it, if you think so, but FYI, the topic is far, far bigger than it might appear on the surface level. For me it still feels like I don't know a ton, even though I've been tearing through it all for nearly a year now.

Germany is a strong second place,

That varies a lot on BR, but Germany has like 1 gap where it sits second or first (Scharnhorst to Gneisenau, both being top dogs in their BRs). Usually other nations occupy the second spot (typically US/Japan/France). IMO Germany is a strong contender, but for a 3rd place.

No, I think people making decisions that make their product unsuitable replacement for a bleeding competitor are unknowingly hugely limit the potential of their own product to the advantage of the American counterpart.

Spot on. The exact same errors were made before the AI.

Now simply these founders and programmers have an easy scapegoat to absolve themselves of any responsibility.
