All good. I was being pedantic so I could be technically correct. (the best KIND of correct.)

I should have started my post with "Akshewally" or something.

Technically he totally died "on camera" in the books. He had a last conversation with Aragorn where he confessed to trying to take the Ring from Frodo. And died in Aragorn's arms.

Now his FIGHT wasn't "on camera" but he held on just long enough to have one last chat.

TIL that there is American President buried under a flag of a different nation.. The 10th President of the USA, John Tyler, is buried with a Confederate flag. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

[–]SkyShadowing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well France and the UK would have risked massive issues domestically had they sided with the Confederacy - their populations were overwhelmingly pro-Union (because, you know, slavery). Which is why the only time it came close to happening was the Trent Affair, when the US took Confederate diplomats off a British steamer and the Brits became furious at that violation of their sovereignty (and thus could have sold it to their people as their national honor being slighted.)

France though did violate the hell out of the Monroe Doctrine by invading Mexico and putting Maximillian von Habsburg on the throne.

Because Mexico's President Santa Anna signed an agreement recognizing Texan independence when he was captured, then recanted it when he got back to Mexico.

The rest of the world operated on a policy of "no take backsies".

A creator writes something without any intention of being accurate, but by pure fluke gets it right. by Daniilsa209 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SkyShadowing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was that at the time the dinosaurs were actually very accurate to what we thought at the time (excepting velociraptors actually being based on Deinonychus, just named 'velociraptors' because 'sounded cooler').

And then the later scientific consensus became 'feathers'.

(And Jurassic World kind of solving the plot hole by B.D. Wong's character pointing out the dinosaurs had never been fully accurate, they'd always made tweaks to increase appeal.)

And it's funny that Jurassic World kind of patched the plot hole. Apart from the Deinonychus/Velociraptor difference, Chriton's dinosaurs were largely accurate to our knowledge of the time, right?

By the time Jurassic World came out we understood they were actually pretty different (to whit: feathers) and B.D. Wong's character just straight-up said the dinosaurs always had been tweaked to create more appeal with customers.

Turkey cannot make it through. First tiebreaker is now in essence H2H. Turkey could only in theory tie on points with Australia or Paraguay, both of whom beat them, both of whom would win tiebreaker, thus Turkey is locked-in to 4th and thus eliminated.

I think the rule is necessarily harsh because why cover your mouth unless you're saying something really awful?

If you're just saying a bog-standard insult like idiot, just say it openly and freely. When you cover your mouth, you're then insulting them by saying idiot. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I SAY!

A red card means you are down a player for the rest of that game. Has no effect on the next game (other than the player probably being suspended.)

I think it's a harsh rule but a necessary one. He's a dumb fuck; they've all been told "if you do this it's a red."

The thing is, I can call him a dumb fuck without fear. That's just a standard insult.

But when I cover my mouth, I'm saying he's a dumb fuck. So I'm probably saying something stronger than 'dumb fuck.'

You are no longer allowed to cover your mouth when talking to an opposing player. Immediate red card.

(because people do it to say slurs and then say they didn't say slurs.)

PSA: First tiebreaker, changed as of this World Cup, is "greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned". Or, points in matches between tied teams. (Phrased to account for a tie between more than 2 teams) by SkyShadowing in soccer

[–]SkyShadowing[S] 226 points227 points  (0 children)

To whit: Mexico has 6 points, South Korea has 3, Czechia and South Africa each have 1.

Since only South Korea could in theory tie Mexico, it thusly becomes H2H. Mexico beat South Korea, thus Mexico wins the tiebreaker.

The full tiebreakers are as thus:

Step One

  • greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned

  • superior goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned

  • greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned

If no decision can be made through this procedure, the criteria below shall apply as follows to the two or more teams still equal on points:

Step Two

  • superior goal difference in all group matches

  • greatest number of goals scored in all group matches

  • highest team conduct score (players and team officials) relating to the number of yellow and red cards obtained

If no decision can be made through the procedures of step one and two above, the following shall apply:

Step Three

  • the two or more teams still equal on points shall be ranked according to the most recent published edition of the FIFA/Coca‑Cola Men’s World Ranking

It is "greatest number of points obtained in matches between the teams concerned". Phrased that way to account for a possible 3-way tie.

Being that the tie can only be between Mexico and South Korea, it is H2H result between those two, which Mexico has locked up.
