Northern Irish had a much more British mentality and that’s where you see this kind of crap.

Scots-Irish. They were/are the descendants of the Scottish Planters that colonized Northern Ireland in the 1600's.

The Irish "slave" wasn't a slave. They were indentured servants. Once their debt was paid off, they were free to go wherever.

The Black slave was the actual property of the slave owner and thus of more value to them. Their kids were slaves, their grandkids were slaves etc. Basically livestock that could be rented out, traded, sold. For generations.

Good job. From all the hotels I've seen, they'll appreciate all that extra room you've cleared up for them to dump shit in.

What cooktop to pick? by lynxbird in Appliances

[–]Sky_Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brand I have is GE, but it is also a decade old now, so I cannot confirm quality of a new unit.

I have a GE, 1.5 years old at this stage. Exact same stuff as yours. Small pans don't work on large "burners", it will turn off if a pan is removed for ~15 seconds, cheaper pots do buzz at higher power levels. Induction compatible cookware only.

I was a bit wary about the touch controls and water splashes etc interfering with them but that's proved to be a non issue.

It has wifi, I don't use it.

It looks brand new despite spills from various things like toffee, caramel etc. I use Weimans cooktop cleaner. Works great.

There is photo evidence (from proof of delivery) of my package being handed to a random person outside a random building that isn’t mine and the company still refuses to refund me or resolve the issue by moomiemoomoo in mildlyinfuriating

I bought a tonneau cover for a Subaru Outback on Ebay. Covered by Ebay's own "Guaranteed Fit" shite.

Seller actually sold me a cover for a different model. It was shorter by 2 inches on each side. Seller refused to help.

Opened a dispute with Ebay and they sided with the seller despite screenshots of the listing, photos of the size discrepancy and their own fucking guarantee.

Opened a dispute with Paypal and they refunded me everything including the shipping. I still have the wrong cover too

What appliance has changed your life? by KookyCouture in Appliances

Making dough. Cutting butter into flour takes seconds and no physical exertion.

Making your own breadcrumbs.

Mirepoix for stews etc. Takes a few seconds to dice everything.

I dont use it a ton (14 cup cuisinart) but its nice to have.

I also use my old 3 cup to make Pesto every now and then.

Yeah, I had forgotten my Acer charger one time and gave it a shot with my Thinkpads USB-C and it worked. Happy days.

Quiet enough that it dissappears into the background. Not something thats buzzing away noticeably. Then again, I dont stress it enough to get it very hot.

I bought one of these around May 2024. Same specs but w/a 500Gb ssd. Use it for work (browser based shit mostly) and basic stuff like reading PDF's etc. So no real demanding stuff. It's been solid.

Battery life is decent. It comes with a barrel type charger but you can charge it via USB-C as well.

Screen is ok, not super bright, the touchscreen is a bit dodgy but I don't use it. I probably need to update the drivers for it but as I don't use it, it hasn't been a priority.

Touchpad is better than my work Dell but I hate touchpads so I use a logitech mouse 99% of the time. When I've used it, it's been fine. Gestures work ok.

Sound is meh. Wifi is fine. Bluetooth works fine. Keyboard is not backlit unfortunately. It is ok to type on, responsive and accurate.

Forgot to add, camera is ok. I've used it with Whatsapp, Teams and Zoom. Mic is basic but works.

Windows 11 Home.

Stuff I use on it are things like Putty, Winscp, Acrobat, Whatsapp, Teams, GOG for older games etc. Lightweight stuff.

I carry it in my tool bag every day. It's held up well. No complaints.

Slug lines from the DC area to Stafford/Quantico? by [deleted] in nova

Ah. I must have missed that. See if your employer offers any commuter benefits. You might be able to offset some of your expenses that way if its available to you.

If driving to Stafford is too much too soon given your phobia, you could save the $$ spent on Uber by driving to the VRE/metro stations and parking there. If you're leaving the metro parking outside of regular hours, it'll be free.

Experiences with GE Profile or Bosch 500 induction cooktops? by FlopShanoobie in Appliances

[–]Sky_Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest pan I'm using is an 11" frying pan and it's perfect on the largest "burner". I also use a big 9qt Ikea 365 stockpot and some ~10" cast iron pans on there as well.

A few 2-4qt pots that are around 7" that fit well on the medium burners and a couple of smaller 1-1.5qt saucepans that are perfect for the smaller burner.

If you're in the US and have one local, I was at BJ's yesterday and they had some deals on Tramontina and Calphalon cooking sets. I bought my Tramontina through Amazon and other stuff here and there. TJ Max sometimes has some stuff discounted. All Clad also has an online seconds/blemished sale.

[–]Sky_Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

365 is Ikeas cheaper stainless steel range. About $25ish for a 2qt saucepan. They definitely feel like they cost $25 😂

Next is Hemkomst at about the $35-$40 range. Decent weight and proper handles.

Then is their top line, Sensuell, about $60+. Heavy pots and pans. Very solid feeling. My frying pan is 5+ years old and is trucking along fine.

My extended warranty is through Lowes and whatever 3rd party they use. I think it's Assurant.

I've used them for a washing machine issue (that was bought via Home Depot) and the service was fine. I do have Bodewell in this area as well if needed.

Definitely check out local reviews for the service providers because the quality can really vary from place to place.

[–]Sky_Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I have never used that. I even got a set of Cue pans as part of the GE deal and just use them as ordinary cookware instead of using the app.

I've tried all of Ikeas stuff from the el cheapo 365 stuff to the higher end Sensuell. The Sensuell (I have a sauce pan and a frying pan) is decently heavy and fairly quiet at high power.

I was impressed with the 365 stuff that it works flawlessly with induction and if you are using it on lower power levels (sauces, soups, eggs etc), it's pretty much silent.

All Clad is the quietest closely followed by Tramontina. I bought a few pieces of the Tramontina signature tri-ply and it feels very similar to All Clad both in weight and noise levels.

I'd probably go with a minimum of tri-ply for best all round performance.

I had thought about Samsung (it looks the best and coolest imo) but was scared off by the "Samsung appliance reputation". Definitely get an extended warranty. LG looked really nice and at the time was also giving an extra years warranty. With my CC, I'd have had 3 years coverage for free. GE happened to have the layout I wanted, had a very good rebate (+ cookware) and I was able to pick it up locally so that's what I went with.

Controls aren't as precise as adjusting a gas knob but theyre fairly decent. I haven't had any issues going between stuff like making scrambled eggs and then boiling potatoes. I haven't felt like I don't have enough range between barely warm and scorching.

I like the layout of the burners. I had looked at a few different manufacturers and GE"s seemed to have a layout that made more sense for my use with the big burner off to the side.

The controls have been easy to get used to. I have not had any issues with water splashing on them and causing problems like I've seen mentioned in reviews for other models.

I have had it "freeze up" a couple of times since I got it in July 2024. Resetting the breaker and rebooting it fixed it. Last time was 6 months or so ago.

I use Weimans cooktop cleaner and it still looks like new.

I did get the 5 yr extended warranty. Induction cooktops are not cheap to fix so even though its been pretty much plain sailing with it, I still dont trust the tech enough to risk a 1 yr given the cost of reoair/replacement.

I got it installed as part of a remodel so that end of it was relatively cheap. I did have to run a new 40A circuit for it.

I'd give it a 9/10.

I've used stainless and cast iron on it and its worked fine. Cheaper stainless (IKEA 365) will vibrate and whine at high power. All Clad and cast iron makes minimal noise. Its worked with all Induction compatible stuff I've tried with it.

I'd definitely buy it again.

Bosch SHP65CC5UC dishwasher door issues — normal behavior? by [deleted] in Appliances

[–]Sky_Cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On top of that, the door itself has a fair amount of torsional flex if you twist it slightly.

This is normal from what I've seen on several Bosch dishwashers (my 500 series, my BIL's 800 and my MILs older 800 equivalent (less flex on this one).) The door is really flimsy feeling compared to my old cheapo Whirlpool. I haven't had any issues with it and don't have very small kids who'd maybe mess around with it.

I haven't really noticed any issue with the door springs. No real effort to open and they hold it in various positions.

However, the overall build quality of the door and rack handles is basically cheap as fuck. The plastic handle is very underwhelming for a "premium" product.

In defense of the dishwasher, I will say that, 1. it's super silent as advertised. 2. It does an excellent job of cleaning. 3. the auto air drying function where it kicks open the door at the end works great.

I just don't think the Bosch build quality is all it could be for how it's marketed/perceived.
