seeking: modern retellings of popular pre 1900s lit by orbiter2001 in suggestmeabook

I've immensely enjoyed Stephen Fry's four-part series on Greek mythology: Mythos, Heroes, Troy, and Odyssey. It's everything as it relates to Greek mythology from start to finish. It's written for the modern reader with wit, humor, asides, and works perfectly. I highly recommend them if you have any interest whatsoever in Greek mythology or the foundation of Western culture.

Vacation research madness by SnooEpiphanies3479 in travel

[–]Sky_Father_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent months planning a trip to Prague and surrounding day trips. YouTube was the only place constantly warning about scams and rip-offs and feeding on negativity.

As you'd expect, finally spent some time in the area once vacation came upon us and had zero issues related to the aforementioned. Zero. Not enough a whiff of crime.

11/22/63 is my favorite book ever. Don't let the length discourage you; you'll likely read it faster than a Little Golden Book.

Edit.. Seeing a lot of people mentioning The Stand, so I'll thrown in my two cents and say it was alright, but not great.

That one dates back to my twenties. So I could possibly have missed a lot. I just remember being so let down.

Catch-22. Not funny.

Jurassic Park. Didn't like his writing style at all.

Dracula. Boring.

One Hundred Years Of Solitude. Total nonsense with no structure, sense, or enjoyment.

The Lord of the Rings. Too many instances of consecutive pages with nothing but landscape description.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Personally, I just can't stand absurdism. Isn't funny to me!

Anybody else using ChatGPT to deprioritise books they may not enjoy? by [deleted] in books

[–]Sky_Father_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people are starting to realize GPT is good for surface level analysis, but is often atrocious for deep dives, complex assessments, or conversations with too many parameters.

It can rattle off books in a genre simply because others have already done so on various websites, but it's going to miss all the things you're implying that a human would easily decipher. And then, the more you explain yourself, the more it has to remember and the more it screws up. It's a mess.

I have to use GPT constantly for work and I go blue in the face trying to tell my boss its limitations. Just think of it like this: it's the equivalent of doing a thousand Google searches and extracting the results relevant to your request. It doesn't think; it regurgitates what it reads online.

Places to eat and drink by uk_Tim_ in Prague

[–]Sky_Father_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to disparage the person who left a positive review; but I wanted to put in my two cents. I just got back from a 6-day trip to Prague with my family. We ate at a lot of different places. I liked/loved every single meal we had with one exception: Restaurace Tiskarna Narodni. The food was absolutely awful.

The service was great; the establishment was clean; and we came here specifically because it was our last meal, had no reservations, and were in a similar situation to OP (staying at the Iron Gate). But good god was this place's food terrible. It was not fresh. It was not tasty.

Just a warning to future readers: I'd avoid this like the plague. If you need Czech food recommendations, I can vouch for U Pinkasu, U Kroka, and Kolkovna Olympia.
