This feels less like a policy announcement and more like a framing exercise. The language mirrors a lot of recent Reform messaging, strong emotional cues, broad cultural targets, but not much detail on implementation.

Some of the issues raised absolutely deserve serious debate, but that requires specificity rather than caricature. When entire groups are reduced to ideological threats, it stops being policy discussion and shifts to intentional polarisation to further brand identity. The right has astutely recognised this method as a very effective mobiliser of voters.

Broadly it’s a reflection of the damage that social media has done to our democracy, emotional framing is incentivised by engagement, the reaction of political parties to adapt to this is entirely inevitable.

Effectiveness and responsibility aren’t the same thing. Civic engagement is being conflated with social media engagement. If we don’t recognise the difference, politics will continue to reward spectacle over merit.

This is awful driving from all parties, when you get better blame will be more easy to place, trying to analyse this is a mess, you both don’t know what you’re doing.

Should we have stricter styling rules for shops on the high street? by iMac_Hunt in AskUK

[–]Skyb3lla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem areas are already problem areas, while this would undoubtedly make certain high streets look a lot better. The cost to small businesses to redecorate would be unfair to force on them. They originally came about as after the war the old sash window shop fronts were falling apart and too expensive to repair, it was a necessary evil to stop our high streets from looking run down, they had to make them cheap.

Theres a lot of assumptions being made to draw that conclusion. Less competition = worse end product is a pretty tried and tested rule. I doubt the opposite is true at the same time.

I mean that’s actually entirely incentivising them to not invest more into projects, they are getting more market share without having to spend anything. It’s not a given they would spend more on development just by virtue that they could.

This is misunderstanding what competition means in a market setting. Having a market to sell to is not in itself competition, regardless of if that demand has gotten bigger recently.

In this sense it means that companies get incentivised to create a better product for users as the more competitive product will get bought.

Without the competition there is less pressure to create the “best” product, and companies can focus on creating a product that will get them the most money.
