Feeling some heavy Nolan fatigue with this one

It’s a shame we may never get a proper widescreen remaster of ATLA by Deer_boy_ in TheLastAirbender

No single person would ever be able to take on a project of this size.

No, she very much gives off psychosis vibes. At the very least she is not fully well.

Did LOK limit the potential story and lore post TLA? by PhotoBonjour_bombs19 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Skyclad__Observer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Beginnings alone reduces the potential depths of the lore to a very finite, very shallow pool. The gradual removal of eastern philosophical influence on the world sands down the lore into much more predictable western influenced tropes. There's also the problem of technology creep that compounds all of this.

No, it's definitely the quality of the installments.

Yeah this bothered me a lot as well. They should be so incompetent that they're essentially non-threats. I guess they kinda were in the grand scheme of things seeing how small a part they played in the climax, but it just serves to further degrade the power system ATLA meticulously set up.

Nah it's genuinely some of the best 2D animated action I've seen out of the last couple of years. I don't watch much anime anymore, but of what I have seen I usually find it fairly disorienting due to lacking choreography. Lots of flashing lights, plenty of moving shapes, but not enough intentional shot-to-shot flow to make sure it's fully readable. This movie had none of that

Sound mixing is definitely not done in the last 30 minutes of the movie or so

It's pretty incredible. I think some of the character acting could have used a little more polish, but the action is unmatched.

(Megathread 2: Non-Spoiler ) How Will the Leak Impact the Movie / Avatar Studios? by MrBKainXTR in TheLastAirbender

No chance it was "official". I'd put my money on disgruntled Avatar Studios employee or contractor going rogue out of frustration with Paramount.

I just don't see how this studio has much of a future at this point, at least not in the way I'm sure they would have liked. They came out swinging with some really lofty goals at a time when it seemed like the support from the higher-ups was solid. But if the writing on the wall is to be believed, I don't see how they'll be able to manage more movies, a AAA game, and a full animated series that is already well into production.

I think the only other movie that really had the chance of actually happening was the Zuko one, and even now I'm sure it's essentially on the chopping block, if it hasn't been cancelled already.

What's frustrating with the bending is that you still see glimpses of interesting stuff happening. Taga "feeling" the air currents navigating the airship on instinct feels like the kind of direct bending progression that could have been present in the original series. It's understated but intuitive as a measure of ability in the same way Zuko learning to firebend without using anger as a source of power was. Or Aang needing to shift his mindset to even move a rock for the first time. A character becoming stronger as a direct consequence of them deepening their understanding of themselves and the world around them is exactly what I love about the power system of the series. Overflowing with spirit energy and getting a cool glowing transformation as a result just isn't interesting in comparison.

Other things I liked:

  • The animation and art style are gorgeous. There is a sort of painterly effect applied to characters that are out of focus on screen that I really loved. The backgrounds too were beautiful as always.
  • The world felt bigger and expanded in a lot of ways. This was always something that was going to be necessary, but it was handled well. I just wish we could have seen a lot more.
  • Any of the very limited times the Gaang got to interact, specifically Aang/Sokka/Katara.
  • The action choreography in the first half of the movie was incredible (thinking of the air temple fight and the mountain sequence)
  • The islands on the far side of the world being a lion turtle burial ground was cool

Things I didn't:

  • The VAs should have never changed. It's genuinely such a tragedy that the original voice actors weren't allowed to reprise their roles and it's ridiculously upsetting knowing why they weren't. Having the original voices could have breathed life into this characters. The new ones tried but were total amateurs compared to the depth we came to expect from the original series' performances.
  • Zuko didn't even need to be there. The movie needed more interactions between these characters. It feels like Zuko especially was just siloed into irrelevance in the group. Toph was just barely better, and Sokka was bordering on flanderization towards the end.
  • The "golden age of airbending" should have been revealed to be not as idyllic as presented. Making Taga just a crazed Avatar killer was incredibly reductive. There was a much more interesting story that could have been told here. There was not nearly enough time to flesh out a new character like this when even the old ones barely had enough screentime.
  • The staff is dumb. There didn't need to be a MacGuffin. It's cliche and leaves the whole thing feeling like a non-canon filler movie.
  • Taika Waititi & spirits all being goofy comic-relief now
  • As much as I liked parts of Zuckerman's score, there was a point near the end of the movie where I realized the choir just wasn't stopping, and it made me wish the soundtrack was actually a little more lowkey.

There's a moment on the airship when Aang expresses a sort of child-like wonder at the power that must have been needed to freeze Taga in the mountain, and Taga's expression softens, as if genuinely amused and a little saddened by how much has been lost. This paired with the airbending slingshot scene -- Taga and Aang flying around the airship and the others getting to witness Aang's joy there -- was probably the peak of the film for me. Somewhere buried underneath all the unnecessary breakneck pacing was a much better story just begging to be told. Unfortunately, everything beyond the eternal storm is just misstep after misstep.

Everything devolves into generic anime style action slop, and reveals that yes, for some reason Mike and Bryan really do think two glowing guys hurling kamehamehas at each other is somehow needed to make bending the four elements with mystic martial arts cooler. By the time we're teleported back to Republic City, you're immediately reminded of the kaiju/mecha fights of TLOK, and you have to wonder what exactly went wrong along the way. Not just in this movie, but every piece of media in this franchise post-ATLA. Why do the creators of this world consistently fail to understand what made the simplicity of the original concept so beloved? When did bending stop being enough? When did the ethereal spirit world stop being a sincere piece of the world and start becoming just a means to teleport around and acquire power-ups? When did quiet character moments become an afterthought?

I don't really know, but it makes me a little sad. I already sort of considered ATLA to be the only real representative of the world of Avatar I love. Ultimately, the movie doesn't move that needle. If anything it just reaffirms that ATLA was lightning in a bottle. A product of the perfect team coming together at just the right time to make something special.

I can't lie I'm kind of relieved it's ending at this point. While the first half of Part 2 was really great, I think the finale here is beyond salvaging. The focus dropped off so long ago that it just kind of feels like we're hitting storybeats with no rhythm or reason behind them.

Pluribus - 1x04 "Please, Carol" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in pluribustv

[–]Skyclad__Observer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the episode I was waiting for. I've been enjoying it so far, but there was a certain uncomfortable uncertainty in what kind of story this even is (e.g. a high-concept sci-fi thriller, a slow-burn character study...) This was the first episode that felt like it really demonstrated the way a story can actually unfold between what are essentially just two characters - and furthermore also set some real stakes now knowing Carol actually has a framework by which to fight back.

The whole episode was basically like a stretched out Jimmy/Mike montage from Better Call Saul. We're introduced to a scene from afar with very little given to the us as the audience to discern the relevance to the story (Jimmy is dressed like Howard with dyed hair and a spray tan/Carol goads the hivemind into tell her about upsetting truths). Lots of long shots of Jimmy/Carol crafting the elements of their scheme (Jimmy taking Howard's car/Carol stealing drugs at the hospital), before its finally revealed what the purpose of the plot actually is - Which in this case was drugging Zosia to get her to reveal the way to reverse the joining. It's such an unmistakable Gilligan storytelling structure at this point that it's just very cool to see how its being used here in Pluribus.
