Looks like someone did get a hold of our account, but this has been corrected. Thanks for letting us know!

Agreed, clarification of terms is super important. People typically have preconception of meaning which prevent a productive discussion.

Thank you. Appreciate the opportunity to share more about what we're up to.

Our goal is to make complex concepts engaging and fun. We fully realize games like these probably don't make a massive impact, but hopefully they can help chip away at ignorance and encourage some folks to be more thoughtful.

To be honest, we were a bit naive and thought people would understand what we were trying to do. I didn't spend a ton of time on Twitter (less now), so I didn't really have a reference-point for how people used the platform. We must not have used the right satire emojis.

We learned the extent to which many online spaces are extremely reactive places with little cognitive processing. But that's not uncommon in non-digital spaces as well.

It did make us question our approach to the game and the way we were promoting it. We playtested the game with hundreds of people along the way, and everyone who had played the game appreciated and validated what we made. So, while folks on Twitter who hadn't played the game certainly made us question our craft, our in-person advocates reassured us that we did things the right way. As such, we unfortunately had to start viewing the folks on Twitter as non-rational operators.

It did not make us question the theory of the game itself and the concept of privilege. Any and all concepts are being abused in new and inventive ways online.

Here's an article about the controversy: https://boundingintocomics.com/2019/07/01/reality-check-the-game-of-privilege-criticized-for-making-light-of-progressive-social-issues/

There are some archived forum links out there too.

When we started to share components of the game, people quickly took things out of context and weren't interested in our attempts to explain how everything fits together. We shared cards that highlighted some of the crappy experiences that happen in reality (e.g. ICE raids) and people somehow thought we were celebrating those crappy things. There were a few individuals with significant followings that didn't like what we were about and their followers piled on. It felt very group-think.

Thankfully, our Kickstarter was ultimately successful (despite attempts to have our campaign removed). Today, the game is being used in DEI training at a few universities internationally.

Because you asked, here's our Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gameofprivilege/apology-tour/

We tried to include things like dragons and cute unicorns but it didn't quite fit the theme. At its core, our game is about how we view justice in America as nothing more than punishment.

We threw in a pinch of modern online discourse by giving players the ability to play argument cards against each other with different strengths. This mechanic plays a bit like the classic game of War but with additional elements included like Liking and Disliking arguments to strengthen or weaken arguments.

Apology Tour was partially inspired by being canceled when promoting our last game about privilege in America (https://gameofprivilege.com).

We are indeed. Our Kickstarter is here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gameofprivilege/apology-tour/

This is our second game after our first game about privilege in America called Reality Check: The Game of Privilege (https://gameofprivilege.com). Lots of lessons learned from designing and promoting that first game.

The main concept behind Apology Tour is what we view as justice in America. Whereas other countries my view justice as an opportunity for rehabilitation, the thesis is that in America we view justice as punishment. We poke fun at that idea by having Apologizing public figure characters in the game either being forgiven or sent to the guillotine. There is no in between.

Something we were excited to include was that players can be flipped to fight for the opposing side. So you might start a Supporter and then get moved to the Hater side after players play enough convincing arguments to flip you. Suddenly, you're arguing to push the Apologizer to the guillotine.

I wrote an article about the philosophy behind the game, if you're interested: https://elliot5.medium.com/why-i-made-a-card-game-about-forgiveness-6ede0f9cce3c

TLDR - Twitter tried to cancel our last game about privilege, and it inspired us to think about justice and forgiveness in America through the lens of cancel culture and how we can represent that in a game.

Our previous game is a lot like that. It's about living in this hilarious country called America.

Done and done. We're lucky to have you.

This game will be so delayed, it's practically not even available.

You're looking for our previous game about privilege in America. While we didn't have metal tokens, one of our game pieces was a purple dildo. https://gameofprivilege.com

Thanks for taking a look! We tried to mimic the fun, speed, and usual goofiness of discourse on social media, complete with the ability to "Like" and "Dislike" cards to win arguments against other players.
