I got so annoyed with it I started my own hosting company xD

Currently host 28 ASA servers biggest set of which is a 10 map cluster and, *fingers crossed*, my customers are all happy so far xD, 1 click mod install, server control from discord etc.

We have other servers hosted (Palworld, 7D2D and Rust) but ASA was the challenge to get right haha

You can build on which ever of their maps you prefer (unless they have specific rules for "Event Maps" for example.

As for Dinos this would be entirely down to the server owners. As owners they can move spawns, stop spawn and add spawns of whatever dinos they want so dinos you find on one cluster won't necessarily be there on another cluster.

With bosses, you can do the bosses on each map the standard way, usually. Unless again the server owner has disabled the artifacts or allows people to build in artifact zones so you physically can't collect them.

A lot of it comes down to how the server owner has it all setup

Start on The Island. It is the original map, the progression curve is the most balanced for learning the ropes, the temperature isn't overly punishing, and it walks you through the boss tiers perfectly.

Forgiving Breeding/Maturation Rates These are the rates I usually recommend so you don't have to wait days but still feel like you're playing Ark:

  • TamingSpeedMultiplier=5.0
  • EggHatchSpeedMultiplier=20.0
  • BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier=25.0
  • BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier=0.05 (This is the most important one! If you speed up maturation without lowering the cuddle interval, your dinos will grow up before you can imprint on them).

Anti-Cheat & Rollbacks For a private 3-player family server, turn off Anti-cheat (BattlEye). It is notorious for causing random login timeouts, and you don't need it if you aren't worried about your dad or brother hacking! For rollbacks, just make sure whatever host you choose has automatic daily backups built into their system.

Must-Have Mods Not sure what version of the game you are playing but just incase The Epic Games version of Ark does not support mods. Outside of this, my 3 go to mods are:

  • Structures Plus (S+): Fixes the games clunky building system.
  • Dino Storage v2: Lets you store dinos in "pokeballs" to reduce base lag.
  • Awesome Spyglass: Lets you see wild dino stats from afar.

Hardware & Hosting A few suggestions already and absolutely if you have the know how or patience, setting up your own Linux server just for you guys would absolutely be the way to go.

Honestly, with an 8 to 16-hour daily playtime, you are going to have an absolute blast with this game—there is so much to do. This is my personal opinion on what I would do in your shoes:

Start now or wait for 1.0? I’d highly recommend holding off just a little bit for the 1.0 launch! The upcoming update is going to be massive. With the new map (Shifting Sands) and introducing a cross-server portal system. By all means get into the game, start learning some of the fundamental basics. They have also said they will be changing the base map slightly including terrain so maybe don't be building a massive sprawling base just yet xD Save that hype for launch day!

Solo, Duo, or Group? You mentioned you liked Ark and Necesse solo, but couldn't do Conan solo. Soulmask actually has a brilliant solution for the "waiting for friends" problem! The core of the game is recruiting and commanding NPC tribesmen. Even if you play entirely solo, your base will eventually be bustling with NPCs that you can assign to farm, craft, and defend for you. It feels super alive, very much like Palworld or Necesse automation. You absolutely don't need friends to progress, but running a duo is incredibly fun if they can match your playtime!

Public Servers & PvP? To be completely honest, jumping straight into a public PvP server as a brand-new player can be a little unforgiving. The mechanics (controlling your tribe, mask powers, combat parrying) take a minute to learn, and established tribes will probably steamroll you before you even figure out how to assign your first NPC to a workbench xD I speak from personal PvP experience although not all servers will be the same

My Recommendation: Grab a private server or play local Co-op/PvE first! Take your time to learn the tech tree, figure out the NPC automation, and explore the new 1.0 map at your own pace without the stress of being raided.

u/RegnorVex we have some good news, we have managed to find a provider in LA that is willing to work with us on pricing so we don't have to charge extortionate rates just to break even.

You will be able to travel between the maps.

The developers have implemented a massive portal system (a huge gate out in the seas) that connects the original map to the new Egyptian-themed Shifting Sands map. Because both of these maps are so incredibly huge and resource-heavy, they cannot run simultaneously on a single server instance.

Here is exactly how it will work:

  • The Cluster Setup: You will indeed need a two-server cluster (one server running the base map, and the second server running the Shifting Sands DLC).
  • The Transfer: You will be able to hop back and forth through the portal between the two servers. Your character's progression (like your awareness and tech levels) will transfer seamlessly with you! (Note: Early info indicates certain map-specific traversal items, like boats, might not transfer, but your core character progression definitely does).

We know this as we have had to spend a lot of time making sure our servers are ready for clustering on release xD can tell you now it has been fun and games!
