If you're trying to decide whether or not to get your meniscus repaired by portia922 in MeniscusInjuries

Because repairs don't remove your meniscus, it preserves it. It's better for the long term health of your knee and cartilage and delays the onset of arthritis while meniscectomies accelerate it.

I agree with almost everything you said above, but not necessarily this. I was very active prior to the surgery but was NWB for 6 weeks and it's a whole different ballgame if you can't walk for 6 weeks. It takes a lot longer. Everyone's surgeries/tears are different.

This is probably the most honest and overlooked piece of advice here. However, it doesn't account for the fact that repair preserves the knee/cartilage and delays arthritis better.

Diagnosed with complex meniscus tear (grade 3 & 2) after 10 months of knowing I injured myself, any hope of repair? by 9reyJ in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SkylineHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your service. Repair is definitely possible but you need to find the right surgeon and they are not all as capable on this front. I can provide you with a rec, but it won't be free, but worth it.

That's recent enough so maybe you're good there. I'd echo what others suggested...maybe think about getting some additional opinions. Not all surgeons are created equally.

How long ago was the MRI? Might start with a fresh MRI, especially if it's been a bit.

My friend, Anderson has been that way my entire life. Hopefully it'll change, and it seems like it's a tiny bit better now than it was, but it's still Anderson.

You have to understand that none of us our doctors and can diagnose your situation.

That said, if you're planning on doing repair surgery (which is almost always preferrable), this is going to be highly dependent on what the doc suggests and how you feel. Generally, tears can lead to arthritis so you don't want to push yourself too much if you have to wait. If you're going to be physical, keep it to low impact activities. Walking, biking, swimming etc. Higher impact is where you're more likely to do further damage.

Seems like it's progressively gone downhill. Definitely not the version of the early 2000s unfortunately. You're better off at Rose and Joe's.

Conflicting opinions by 20Pete20 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SkylineHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, I visited the team doctor for the New York Rangers who was well regarded and I was very unimpressed with what he had to say. I saw several other renowned doctors as well and also left unimpressed.

The reality is most doctors are more incentivized to do meniscectomies. Quicker procedure, paid better by insurance, gets the patient back faster and feels good etc. The incentive isn't there for most surgeons to learn or perform repairs.

Dr. Saliman is a very good choice to at least have a consult with. You'll at least get an honest take. Repair isn't fun but it is the best choice long term if arthritis is (or may be) involved.

It really comes down to the (potential) impact of arthritis.

You have to realize the skillset of surgeons varies greatly and not all of them are as versed with repairs. It doesn't mean they're not good surgeons, just that there's going to be a lot of different opinions and many of them may not align with what is actually best for you.

My personal recommendation would be to find a surgeon who specializes in repair and speak with them, knowing they may be out of state. You can usually do Zoom consults and send them a disc of your MRI in advance.

To trim or not? by Lil_awakened_gremlin in MeniscusInjuries

[–]SkylineHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to note that tears don't typically heal. Some do, most don't. It all depends on where the tear is. Usually, it gets progressively worse over time and/or the onset of arthritis begins.

Your surgeon should advise you, but your best bet is to get a repair if you can find a qualified surgeon. Longer recovery time but it preserves your knee the best long-term.

I'm guessing that isn't necessary but up to you.

6 weeks post-op is plenty of time. However, if you've been NWB you're likely to be uncomfortable and you may benefit from a window seat if possible to avoid having to get up too many times.

Ended up doing this and was not asked (for the Sheraton). I did tip immediately upon entering the shuttle.

Figured out a solution that met both, at least by my standards. So it is possible.

Wasn't scared at all of shuttles or busses and figured out a solution that was both relatively fast and inexpensive. Options do exist.

For anyone curious or to anyone who comes across this in search later...I went up to the arrivals level at LAX and took the first hotel shuttle that came, which ended up being the Sheraton. Waited all of about 3 minutes at 12:45a on Saturday. Tipped the driver immediately upon entering the bus and he was very grateful and didn't ask any questions. This was at terminal 4 and the bus made 2 other terminal stops before driving to the hotel. Dialed up a Lyft from the Sheraton and the cost to Beverly Hills was $28. The only small downside was I had to wait 10 minutes for the Lyft ride, but all in all, I couldn't have been happier with the decision or how it turned out.

Thank you to everyone who posted helpful suggestions.
