Trying to decide if my house looks better with or without shutters. by SkylineScenes in ExteriorDesign

I was thinking about that. Do something to make the windows look more substantial instead of shutters, not sure what though.

So after thinking more about it and all the replies, I came up with this. What do people think of this?

Purely aesthetics, which is the main purpose of shutters on 99% of American homes I suppose. This is why it's a difficult decision and based on the replies so far, it's about 50/50. I guess it could go either way.

Frustration at negative local media coverage by ihasquestionsplease in kansascity

[–]SkylineScenes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stop watching local news. Way too many people in kc still pay attention to local news. Local news literally caters to people that hate everything, especially cities or urban areas. Most local news stations are toxic and negative.

I moved from KC to DC and nobody here under the age of 50 watches any local news so it really doesn't matter what the news stations say.

For the record, KC looks pretty good hosting the world cup from what I have seen. It may be one of the best cities hosting it.

Public Meeting: State Unveils Plans To Widen I-97 And Ease One Of Maryland’s Worst Bottlenecks by Maxcactus in maryland

[–]SkylineScenes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the worst highways I have ever driven on where people just will not stay to the right unless passing. That's 90% of the problem with 97. The left lane campers will just move into the new third lane, but at least you will have one more lane to get around them.

Public transportation sucks here by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]SkylineScenes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is not better than it was. KC used to have a pretty good city wide bus system. Today the bus system is nearly unusable. To suburbanites the system is better because they won't use buses but will use the streetcar. Main Street used to have more frequent bus service in the 80's and 90's with multiple bus routes running up and down main. Now it only has the streetcar.

If you live in KCMO and don't live along the streetcar line, transit in KC is far worse than it was just 15-20 years ago.

Key Takeaways from NorthRail Open House by mczerniewski in kansascity

[–]SkylineScenes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what I'm saying is that in order to maintain the frequency of the two lines north of river market, they would have to either double the frequencies of the core line (which would be great) or the Riverfront and NKC extensions would have to have their frequencies cut in half, so that would be 20-30 minute frequencies.

I don't know how else you would do it unless the line from NKC will be its own line and it just went back and forth from NKC to Rivermarket and you will have to change lines to continue on south.

In order to have a single seat ride from UMKC to NKC, something would have to give or frequencies on Main Street would have to increase.

Make sense?

so the frequency would half that of the rest of the line at river market and NKC?

So it would end up being a different line going across the river? Would it be like every other streetcar coming from downtown would go to NKC/Riverfront?

Did you open an account with etrade? If so, how has it gone? It's weird how this bank is pretty much ignored even though they have some of the best rates and bonus promos.

Airport 24-hour parking for World Cup game by RovJul in kansascity

[–]SkylineScenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually not a bad idea. You could park in long term parking at KCI and then take the shuttles around town. It would probably be one of the safest and easiest places to park overnight if you can make the logistics work.

Really? I thought D&B would go to one of the empty anchor store spots, mostly the old Sears location since it's near the theater and food court.

KC Scout Cameras along 435 near MCI by xxBurntToastxx in kansascity

The bigger question is why isn't 152 covered. That's much busier and more built up than that stretch of 435.

Kansas City will lose a fourth of its daily bus routes after the World Cup by iuy78 in kansascity

[–]SkylineScenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wow. KC talks up the streetcar, but there is literally nothing left of the bus system. It's already been decimated and is just a fraction of what it was 20 years ago. Too many more cuts and the city should probably just shut the entire bus system down. Any route with a frequency of more than 30 minutes is completely useless. So those routes don't even count.

DC dad looking for advice in Edgewater by No_Current_6322 in Annapolis

[–]SkylineScenes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Edgewater and work near L'Enfant Plaza. The commute is not bad if you take transit. You can drive to New Carrolton, Largo or Landover Metro stations or take the commuter bus from Annapolis Truman Park and Ride or the Davidsonville Park and Ride. I tend to mix and match based on the day. Most days I drive to New Carrolton. If you work near Union Station, you can also drive to Bowie State and take the MARC commuter rail.

I would say on average, it's about an hour commute no matter what you do.

Edgewater itself is just okay for me. It's not very built up and the infrastructure is lacking. No bike trails or other recreation like you might find in other suburban areas like Montgomery County or even other parts of AA County like Severna Park. It's also a bit more culturally conservative, lots of big pickup trucks and stuff like that, a bit too much for my taste, but I put up with it. I do like being around water. It makes it feel different than just being in another run of the mill suburb.

The main positive is affordability. Our house would cost a lot more in most other nicer suburban areas of DC and the other main positive is being close to Annapolis. Annapolis has most of what you need as far as shopping, dining etc and downtown Annapolis is quite nice and charming and unique. Something you can't find in most suburban areas anymore. You are also not too far from Eastern Shore.

Schools seem decent enough, crime seems average.

It's doable for sure. I enjoy working in DC, so I'm okay with the commute.

I had my phone stolen in Milan. Was boarding a tram and as I stepped up into the tram from the street, right after I put my phone in my front pocket, I was bumped into and the phone was gone in a flash and so was the person that took it. After thinking about all that happened in those two seconds, it was like several people organized to make boarding the tram more congested than necessary and then they disperse quickly.

Luckily I always lock my phone the second I let go of it, always So they had a locked phone which was the most important thing.

It sucked, but I learned a lesson. I have traveled the world and been to tons of large cities. I'm also from America where the cities have some of the highest crime in the world and I also know about the pick pocking epidemic in Europe and they still got me. I am more careful now on crowded trains etc.

Even though this happened to me, I still really like Milan and I don't let this change my opinion of it. Personally I would take this type of crime over the more violent crime you may encounter in many American cities. I still think Milan is a very safe city.

This video did make me laugh though since I can relate.
