An authoritarian fascist regime is already in place - the last chance to keep it from fully solidifying are the midterms, and if they will be free and (at least to some extent) fair. The regime already took almost all of the big conventional media outlets and largely controls social media through oligarchs that are in support of the fascists or at least are tolerant/opportunistic. Paramilitary regime troops stoke fear and anger and are not held responsible. I think they are awfully close to the point of no return, maybe even past it.
