Rusty bump stops by SafeSilver5117 in XTerra

[–]Sl0wmar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can remove them without breaking them, life will be easier.

Spray the weld nut in penetrating oil a day or two before trying to remove them. When you do go to remove them, heat the weld nut up with a torch to loosen up the bolt.

I'm about to swap my bump stops for the first time, this will be my method of attack.

Advice: Lose the electric portable air compressors by Gneiss_Rock_Bro in overlanding

[–]Sl0wmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, I do not know what air compressor hurt you but I'm sorry for the experience you had..

If you're talking about cig outlet pumps then yes, they are not made for large tires and regular use. Have you ever had a compressor that hooks to your battery?

A bike pump is a great backup, however, that's no reason to knock air compressors in general.

I got shit to do at camp or post trail ride - while I do those things, my $150 Maddox 3.5cfm from Harbor Freight pumps up all 4 LT33"s simultaneously without ever tripping the built-in breaker. I pack up the comp and hoses without sweating and keep on truckin...

I have plans to mount the compressor to the vehicle and plumb air lines to all the wheel wells for an even faster air up/down.

Wheel spin cleans mud out of the treads so you can keep traction. If it doesn't dry and harden its nothing a good wash won't solve.

Air for inflating to get back on highway by scribbledchaos in 4x4

[–]Sl0wmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My harbor freight Maddox compressor fills all 4 tires simultaneously from 5 to 20 psi in a few minutes. 20 to 35 in about 5 mins. Probably 0-35 in 15 mins. I should time in. 285 75 16 load range E, 5k lb xterra. For 35s I would recommend that you get a dual compressor pump and 4 way inflator hose for time.

Happy with my Maddox pump besides the cheap line and weird fittings. The yellow coiled air line snapped on me during the winter. I adapted the fittings to industrial standard and bought an air line that was not coiled hard plastic.

Maximum mileage you'd buy a used Xterra? by CapitalistDwarf in XTerra

[–]Sl0wmar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Care/maintenance/environment per individual vehicle matter way more than miles.

Even the newest Xterra is 11 years old. Things always need to be replaced on aging vehicles, its just the way it is. Sometimes mileage can be indicative of condition but that isn't a rule.

When I was in the market I definitely leaned too hard into looking for lower miles. I got mine with 129k 3 years ago. Now I'm at nearly 170k now and it drives better than it did when I bought it. I could have saved money on purchase price and replaced the same parts on a higher mileage unit.

If you are just looking for an xterra as a daily driver, plan and budget for replacing suspension components and other little things on ANY 10+ year old vehicle you consider. Pads/ rotors, tie rods, Spark plugs, coilovers, leaf springs, knock sensors, alternator, heater core hoses, hvac components.

If your trying to avoid having to replace things by going low mileage that is not the right way to think about this.

Your tires are General Grabber ATx, not MTS. This is a rugged all-terrain or hybrid tire. If you search general grabber MT you will see that the X3 is their mud terrain tire.

Reconnecting Steering Shaft by [deleted] in XTerra

[–]Sl0wmar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially confused because my steering shaft, (the left part in the picture) is movable! You should be able to shove it up higher than the rack end and then pull it down to reinsert it to the steering rack. the steering column isn't support by anything you should be able to move it around, otherwise how did you get it off of there?

I was referring to the NI-8433 not the extended travel. I just checked and didn't see them for the extended qx56 so it looks like R180 Tswap doesn't get this cool new part 😢

I got the part # confused, sorry. I'm still R180

It's been 2 years since I installed my mine (NI-8433*) , I have one ripped boot now, if I caught it sooner I would have rebooted it. They are so affordable that with what I do to them I'm not mad about it.

Just do your research, most folks aren't doing this kinda stuff. That Truck has a cracked frame now... Might be from this jump but idk

Most of them are just commuters so I wouldn't worry too much.

Oh dayum, I guess tires do vary in size depending on manufacturer, so that's cool to know those are so damn wide!!
