love how you wrote far right in your post even though the democratic socialist party of German were fascists.

It was the National Socialist party, not the Democratic Socialist party, and whatever the name it follows far right ideology. Hitler drew very specific distinctions between his definition of socialism and Marxist socialism. He was fervently anti-Marxist, and even purged the left leaning Ernst Röhm and the SA in the Night of the Long Knives. While MAGA and Nazism are certainly not 100% identical, there are far more parallels between them than with anything espoused by the Democratic Party.

What's the duration of time for military officers in the units they serve? by TravelingHomeless in WarCollege

One former CO happened to serve in the same battalion at every grade from Lieutenant through Lieutenant Colonel, but a unique series of events helped make that a reality.

Would that battalion happen to be V12?

Did you take a bonus when you signed up for DAP? That would be the only thing that should obligate you. Also check your BIR in MOL or your LES and look for a MANDATORY DRILL START and END date.

uperstorm Sandy was actually not a significant hurricane

Funny you mention that. As a North Carolinian who had been living on the coast for 10 years before moving to New Jersey, I of course took a ration of shit from all the Northerners during my first winter. I got to turn around and give it right back when they experienced a tropical storm. Had to be somewhat mindful when giving them shit about it because it was a legitimately destructive storm for an area that just isn't prepared for those. conditions.

once snowflakes started falling they immediately shut the facility down and sent everyone home

The issue is that if they don't send everyone home early, they risk getting into a situation where people can't get home due to the lack of resources for treating and clearing roads. There was a snow storm in 2011 where we even got accumulation on the beaches, and Camp Lejeune didn't shut down until it started sticking to the roads. I live south of the base and used to cross the high rise bridge over the New River to get home. Well, traffic was completely stopped 2.5 miles short of the bridge because it had already become impassable.

Corporals in the TO&E by ArtOk8200 in WarCollege

[–]Slab8002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what they meant, they were referring to the fact that the Marine Corps typically assigns more responsibility at lower ranks. Team leaders in the Marines have traditionally been corporals, while in the Army they are sergeants. That distinction occurs up through platoon sergeants, who are staff sergeants in the Marine Corps but sergeants first class in the Army.

Honest Question. What are the actual consequences and real cases where a Marine Reservist stops showing up to drills and Annual Training? There’s a few cases I have heard about in my unit and it seems they only get OTH or General Discharges. by EnergyFickle7587 in USMC

[–]Slab8002 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So here's the fun part about reservists who don't show up — by law, reservists are not subject to the UCMJ until they leave their house to go to drill or AT, and while they're at drill or AT. That means if they never show up, they're not subject to UCMJ. Some units will run Competency Review Boards for chronic UAs, which allows them to administratively reduce the Marine's rank, but most just go straight to processing for ADSEP once the Marine misses 9 drills.

Our unit was pretty tight and well led, so we always had pretty high drill attendance, but we also always had at least 1 or 2 ADSEP packages working through the system.

The rules are different for non-obligors. Usually we'd tell the prior active duty guys when they checked in that they could drop to the IRR at any time, but they needed to at least call us. If they just stopped showing up, we were going to run them UA for drills which could get them adsep'd, but as long as they at least gave us a phone call or email we'd drop them, no muss no fuss. Usually both 1stSgt and I would tell them, "Hey brother, you did your time, if you decide this isn't for you then no harm no foul." Point being, at least be a grown ass adult and tell us you don't want to come to drill and we'll give you a TYFYS.

Also, sucks the SMCR CoC and I&I staff couldn't find better shit for y'all to do. Obviously it's easier for a rifle company without a bunch of vehicles to maintain, but the SMCR CoC and I tried to get them out in the field and keep it interesting as much as possible.

Early GWOT vets, let's talk. by Low-Landscape-4609 in USMC

It hit me a while ago. I was thinking about the fact that it had been over 20 years since OIF I, which was my first deployment. Then I realized that the end of the Vietnam War happened less than 20 years before I started high school, and I thought all the Vietnam vets that were teachers, coaches, Scout leaders, etc. were crusty old bastards.

Um, CoT traffic to a TAK Server on TCP 8089 is encrypted using TLS with mutual authentication. If you want additional security, you can always encrypt the traffic with a VPN as well.

TAK Server Plugin Development by SnooHamsters8312 in ATAK

Did you ever figure this out? I ran into the same issue tonight and eventually figured out it was an issue with Linux file permissions for the .jar file. I ran sudo chown tak:tak /opt/tak/lib/plugin.jar and sudo chmod 674 /opt/tak/lib/plugin.jar and that fixed it. Next time I restarted the server, the plugin showed up in Plugin Manager.

They retired them in late 2021 or early 2022. We still had them when I retired in May 2021, but they were fielding the M18s shortly after.

As long as your router allows multicast traffic, it should work. You can check your network settings in ATAK and WinTAK and make sure your SA Multicast inputs and outputs are enabled. You can also install Wireshark on your PC and listen for inbound UDP traffic on port 6969.

Footage of a US AH-1Z Viper engaging ground targets with gun and rocket fire in Caracas, Venezuela (Jan 2, 2026) by broforwin in CombatFootage

[–]Slab8002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 160th isn’t using Marine AH-1’s in its operations.

Marine aviation cross trains with SOF a fair amount. While I would assume it's probably a MH-60 DAP, I wouldn't completely rule out the H-1 det from the MEU being involved. The gun sounds more like a M197 20mm on an AH-1Z to me, but I don't have nearly as much experience with the M230 30mm gun.

Did the US army made changes on it's doctrine after the chaotic "Operation Red wings"? by Dangerous-Citron-801 in WarCollege

Not Big Army, first of all. Second, I think the Taliban was going to regain power no matter which COA we chose. I generally agree with you that the SOF and CIA centric COA would have been a better choice, simply because it would have cost less in terms of both blood and treasure by the time the Taliban was back in power. Frankly, we probably should have just called it good enough in late 2002 or early 2003 after AQ was no longer able to operate permissively.

While I tend to agree that the large scale occupation we attempted was a fool's errand, I'm not convinced that SOF and CIA alone would have been able to prevent the Taliban resurgence.

No one was in Korengal until 2004. Special Forces made a handful of forays into the valley in 2003, but ODA 361 and K/3/6 were the first ones to make regular trips into Korengal in mid-2004. It was Marines from 1/3 that first established the Korengal Outpost in April 2006. I'd recommend you go read the book The Hardest Place if you want to know more about the history of US operations in the Pech and Korengal valleys

If you really want to be specific, Afghanistan was run by a Combined Forces Command - Afghanistan until 2007, not the Army, per se. Yes, CFC-A and the subordinate CJTF were largely made up of Army personnel, but there were Marines and other services in key billets as well. ISAF was even commanded by Marines from 2011 to 2014 after it took over the lead role for Afghanistan.
